With the expiry of her boiler ticket looming, LMS Royal Scot Class No. 46100 Royal Scot would haul her final passenger train, taking charge of LSL Chairman Jeremey Hosking's annual private Christmas trip.
The engine returned to steam in 2015, and the mainline in 2016, hauling various tours with DB Cargo and West Coast Railways, before eventually joining the pool of steam locomotives with Locomotive Services Group. Her ticket was due to expire in March 2022, but an extention was granted to the end of this year. As of this moment, it is not known when, or if, the locomotive will return to the mainline, meaning it'll be a very long time before she graces mainline metals again. As such, a final farewell to the iconic locomotive was to be made.
Travelling round the usual Kent circuit, from London Victoria to Dover via Newington, before returning to the capital via Dover, Ashford and Godstone, the chase begins at Beckenham Hill, where a last minute reposition to the safe side had to be made to prevent being bowled by a Thameslink service. Overtaking the train during a pathing stop at Newington, Royal Scot is next seen digging into the 1 in 100 climb at Selling, approaching the Canterbury East water stop. This stop allowed another overtake, where we headed to Aylesham as the engine powers through towards Dover. Finally, with the sun setting on her final run, Royal Scot is captured powering away from Redhill with some excellent smoke effects, on the final stretch back to the capital.
A massive thank you to the crews on the engine for the performance given throughout the day. It certainly made for a grand send off for what will be a long while before she is seen in steam again. Farewell old girl.
