This isn’t the first time we’ve set up our heat shields and captured the supernova that is Royal & the Serpent. Initial observation actually went down on the set of our Official Live Performances with Demi Lovato. Royal, whose real name is Ryan Santiago, was there to join her pal for a rip through their “EAT ME” collab. That was a handful of months ago. In the span of time since, Santiago’s been putting blood red lines through the modern rocker checklist: a cover story feature with Spin mag, and a support slot on Fall Out Boy’s upcoming tour. And like any good auteur, the rocker continues to stitch her artistic mythology with a Jungian level of detail. Why yes of course that unique moniker has meaning! “Royal is really good at connecting. She’s honest and truthful and has this light about her, this openness and joy,” Santiago explains. “The Serpent is the darkness, the depression, the struggling with drug use that still comes through in the music.” That dichotomy is all over the recent “Happiness is an Inside Job” EP; it’s even right there in the cynically phrased but philosophically enlightened title. Drums aren’t safe from the Serpent’s wrath, as you can see when “No Regrets” nears its close. Her surprise catharsis is the kind best shared in a live setting, so you might wanna grab tix while you can. Just bring your protective gear.
