Hey, I just wanted to give you a little backstory on 505 candy. It's actually pretty symbolc. Factory that makes it was called "Union" before WWII, and after the war it was nationalized and renamed "Josip Kraš" after a WWII hero. Before the war he was workers union leader. The candy was named 505 in his honor, and it stands for his prison number, and "sa crtom/with a line" is a reference to prison uniform which is stripped/with lines.

I found your channel because I was searching for a starting point to learn Hrvatski. My favorite tennis player is from Split & it frustrates me no end that there are _so_ many of his interviews I can't understand. I've discovered so much more, though, on your channel. I love your videos about exploring all the cities, what a beautiful country Croatia is! Where I live old things are just demolished, not cared for & respected like all the wonderful architecture in Croatia. I appreciate the videos w/ Baka & Dida & getting to know more about the people & the culture. I just want to hug them, they're both so genial! Your enthusiasm about the land you live in is a joy to see & I wish your family all the happiness in the world, thanks again! 😊

It's intetesting story about Jaffa waffles, and why It's called like that. But maybe even inventors of them doesn't know it. When I was kid, each orange had sticker Jaffa. Everybody thought it's only a brand. But truth is that in that time oranges were imported from Israel, where orange plantations were near harbour Jaffa or Jaffo. In that time, the first and only orange syrup was also called Jaffa. So today when you say Jaffa, you think about orange.

Excellent video. You nailed it guys! I would like to tell you that when I was a kid (in the 80s) we had special way of eating Jaffa cakes; first you eat the edge all around the jelly part, then you peal the jelly off, eat the chocolate off, then you eat the biscuit. Jelly is saved to be eaten last. 😁 Also, we used to eat “štapići” in such way that we nibbled the half of štapić along the entire lenght. It was a kind of competition: to nibble all the way without breaking it. 😄

I'm a Serb, but I grew up in Yugoslavia (born in 1976), so most of these candies were a part of my childhood too. I'll give my perspective, with few remarks. Important note is that I grew up in a smallish town (15-20k people) in Montenegro: 1. 505 sa crtom - was very popular, always marketed on TV, but I never tried it. I'm not sure it was even sold in my town in 1980's. But I remember many grandmas had a tin can with "505 sa crtom" label where they kept their coffee or sugar. But, again, I never saw this sold in my childhood. I never liked hard candy, though, so I was sad for this.. 2. Bronhi - was not a fan as a kid, as Ivan said, it was mainly popular with older people. In Serbia we have "Negro" brand, which is almost the same as Bronhi. It is good, but still not my cup of tea. 3. Mikado - and other rice chocolates, I LOVED those, and I still do. I don't eat it for health, I like the taste, the smooth crispiness.. 4. Kiki - hands down, a favorite with all the kids of my generation. If I remember correctly, though, there were only two tastes/colors then (yellow and rose one), and you didn't know which one you'll get when you unwrap the candy, because the wrapping was the same regardless of flavor. 5. Rum pločice - always loved it, because I love every candy with rum in it :) 6. Životinjsko carstvo - loved it very much, not so much because of the chocolate, but because of the sticker. Now, there comes again the "small town" part. We could not purchase the album in our town, I even thought it was a legend the album even exists. 7. Bananko - I'm not sure I ever tried that one, but I guess it is similar to other "chocolate bananas" like Štark's "Bananica". I loved these, and I still do. I noticed that people from other countries never liked them in many YT videos with trying foods, so I guess it is something you grow with. 8. Moto - loved it, not my favorite, but still good. I used to pick the filling from the hole in the middle with my index finger, and only when I eat that, I would proceed to the rest of the cookie. 9. Tortica - I don't remember this candy as a part of my childhood, I tried it recently, and I don't like it. 10. Napolitanke - everybody loves napolitanke. My favorite filling flavor was lemon. In those time it was lemon or cocoa filling. 11. Pettit beure - loved it, not biggest fan, but I liked to dip it into water, and eat it when it swells and softens. 12. Rondo C - never tried it, and it didn't exist then. There was Rondoment from Pliva company (I think), which was my favorite candy, but it was discontinued long ago. It had a taste similar to Wrigley's spearmint, only a little sweeter. 13. Vau-vau - I never saw these. 14. Jaffa - my favorite cookie, but from "Crvenka" brand, I didn't even know that Kraš has it's own variant. The orange jelly was my favorite part :). I say WAS, because they are not the same quality now 15. Domaćica - meh, I usually didn't refuse it, but I was never eager about it. 16. Bobi - didn't like it, "Smoki" from "Štark" was much better - crispy but soft and full of peanut parts. Now "Smoki" tastes exactly like "Bobi" tasted back then. Shame. 17. Saltas - I never saw these. As a kid "Prima" - Soko Štark was the most popular. But I always liked pretzel sticks, and still eat them often. There are many other brands.

Ive been saying for years if Napolitanke were american product they would be popular like cocacola. So good, the best. I dont keep it in my house couse they are overly addictive. Chocolate napolitanke are premium product that belongs on shelfs with caviar.

Napolitanke are my favourite. Can buy them in Canada at specialty stores such as European Deli shops or bakeries in southwestern Ontario. You can buy the Kras chocolate bars as well. Being Croatian-Canadian and growing up in Canada I agree with Sarah on just about all the snacks. So it must be a culture thing on flavours depending where you grow up that you would like some of the more Croatian variety of candies. Still my favourite are Snickers, Kit Kat and gummy bears, yum yum.

Petit Beurre, probably the healthiest cookie in the world. When you have stomach flu its the only sweet you can eat. Also I love to put them in Čokolino, or with milk like in video, or when you make kremšnite... They can be used in so many ways 😊

Here in Serbia we have our version of Jaffa. When they changed recipe of that biscuit part I stopped buying it. Now it has too much additives to keep it fresh as long as possible and it has gummy texture I really don't like.

Have you tried putting half milk to your petit guerre cookies, mix and then microwave for 3 to 5 mins? It makes a great mug cake for breakfast. My 14 year old taught me!🤣 I get that you don't like jelly in cookies Sarah, me neither.😖 Another great video you guys!
