Today we sat down and tried 13 different bakery items from a few different bakeries around Zagreb. We tried both traditional pastries, and a few more modern ones, and we rated them on a scale from 1 to 10!
I love all of the bakeries in Croatia. They're practically on every corner, and they're filled with a thousand different varieties of sweet pastries and savoury goods.
Here they are in the order that we tried them:
1. Burek - a delicious, flaky, phyllo-pastry, filled with cheese. It's salty, not sweet, but it's a perfect mid day snack, very filling and a very traditional Croatian bakery item!
2. Slanci - another traditional item found in all Croatian bakeries. My kids love it. It's very plain and basic, but who doesn't love a soft breadstick with a lovely salty glaze swirled on top?
3. Krafna - not your typical North American doughnut, but the ones from Mlinar are very good. They have a nice sweet coating of icing sugar on top and they're usually filled with jam (although I prefer when they're filled with chocolate :)
4. Piroska - a very traditional bakery snack that Ivan remembers eating as a child throughout elementary school! A simple fried dough with a creamy-cheese filling. Who doesn't love a little fried dough? They were pretty good!
5. Buhtla - we got this filled with chocolate, but you can also find them filled with jam. They are quite a traditional product as well, but I can say they're delicious. The chocolate inside the one we tried from Pekarnica Svetice was absolutely delicious. Ivan thinks it tastes like Nutella on bread. Either way, a nice sweet snack if that's what you're in the mood for.
6. Lisnato s visnjama - a phyllo pastry filled with cherries. It tastes just like a cherry pie, and it was pretty good. I prefer a chocolate filling, but this filling was quite nice. The pastry part was very flaky, which I really like!
7. Strukli - this is absolutely a traditional "dish" in Croatia, as it's typically served as part of a meal. It can be served with breakfast, as an appetizer for lunch or dinner, it can also just be a quick snack. It's very versatile and can be made either sweet or savoury. We tried the salty version and it was delicious!
8. Strudla od jabuke - this is basically just an apple pie in a different form. It was really good. Ivan likes strudel better than lisnato, because the dough is more of a "hand made" type of dough, rather than a more flaky pastry. The apple filling was delightful and I would definitely recommend this to others!
9. Puz s makom - I'm not sure how common it is to bake with poppy seed back home, but I love that type of filling. This was like a cinnamon roll, but filled with poppy seed instead. It was pretty good. When I first moved to Croatia, I couldn't stop eating pastries filled with poppy seed!
10. Pita s krumpirama - kind of a potato pie. This is one of my favorites lately. I often get this little snack when I'm out and about running around. It's like a potato pie in a stick form and the filling is absolutely delicious. It's salty, peppery, and just has a really nice taste. Also, the outer layer is a bit crunchy, which I like!
11. Paski klipic - this is a little sandwich that's made with a special cheese found in Croatia, Paski Sir (from Pag Island). It's a very famous cheese, and it's great! The bread also has olives baked inside, which makes the sandwich all that much more delicious. There is also red pepper spread, and it just makes the sandwich come to life. It's a great snack on the go!
12. Topli Senvic - this is kind of like an open faced veggie sandwich. Ivan loves this one and gets it often when we're running around. It has nice slices of zucchini and tomatoes with cheese and some oregano on top. Its great when it's fresh from the oven!
13. Spek rolica - this was my least favorite out of everything. I'm not a huge fan of spek. I like "typical" bacon, like the kind you find in North America, but spek isn't my thing. The corn bread on the outside was nice though, and I'm sure anyone who likes bacon and spek is going to love spek rolica!
There are definitely so many other items we could have tried, but we wanted to show you the most traditional pastries, the more modern ones, and also the baked goods that we just like the best. We think it's a good variety, but we'd love to hear from you if you think we forgot some any staple items from the bakery!
Let us know which ones are your favorite (or which ones you don't particularly love) in the comments below.
Thanks for watching!

@Kristina Banden - when I read the word "slastičarnice" I gulped... Sarah's and Ivan's vid and the whole stuff of bakery products were excellent, but you haven't lived when you have not been in a slastičarna, eating those Kremšnite, Mađarice, Orehnjače, Breskvice, Čupavce etc...I want that now. Immediately! OMG Btw...my grandma used to make the best pita sa jabukom ever. We had our own apple trees (jabuka petrovka) and when she made this godlike pita sa jabukom/jabukova pita....you had no more questions and the whole universe became a simple equation...

Just discovered your channel and I love all the videos I've watched so far. As a German exchange student living in Zagreb since September '20, I recognized many things but also learned something new about the Croatian culture. The video about the earthquake really got me. Although I was here and saw what happened in Sisak, Petrinja and surroundings on national media and from what Croatian friends with friends and relatives from there told me it was still shocking to watch and listen to the stories.

Croatian bakery game is very strong, it seams to me that it is kind of our substitution for fast food stands or restaurants, cause there aren't so many of those. When I travel I miss it, even in west Europe you can't find bakeries on every corner like here and products are different but less practical, more fancy, and when I'm hungry I'm like I don't need your fancy stuff, just give me burek :) Štrudla sa sirom or burek sa sirom are my favs.

Hey guys, interesting! Great idea for a video, as the bakeries are such a cornerstone to the local lifestyle, adding simplicity to daily activities, sustenance on the run, and is a 'get out of jail' card for parents who don't need to prepare snacks for kids in school. One of the GREAT perks to living in Croatia is that you can buy a pastry in a bakery and eat it in a cafe as you have your morning coffee! This just isn't allowed anywhere else in the world! The choices on offer are now quite impressive, so perhaps a follow up video for folks back in Canada is to do a shopwindow tour of some of the bakeries in town! And of course the cake shops, the traditional old Slastičarna vs the new trendy places..... but that's an entirely different story!
@RoyalCroatianTours

Every time people eat bacon, it reminds me of a pale white guy that has been too long in the sun and now everyone is having a go. Anti-bacon brigade ;-) Croatian pastries are definitely delicious, since lot of bakeries prepare them on the spot. I get the craving for Timmy’s maple glaze, since donuts in North America are more sugar-indulgent, which definitely hits the spot from time to time. In Canada, lot of Polish or Russian stores carry poppy-seed strudel and cakes. If you’re lucky to love close to one, it’s hard to resist them. Thanks for the upload.

The more spicy food you eat the more spice you want, especially for salt and sugar. That's why we eat unhealthy amounts of them because they are cheap and available. Give some kid in a third world country a bottle of coke(he never had industrally processed food or drinks) and he will spit it out. I've had Croatian type of donut in Ireland (Ireland is very American influenced), and it had double the sugar...disgusting, I'm not some kid who wants to keep eating sweets, ice cream and drinks sodas.
