Vittorio Grigolo as the Duke in Rigoletto

The ever popular Vittorio Grigolo returns to the Royal Opera House for Rigoletto as the womanising and carefree young Duke of Mantua.
This film was relayed in cinemas around the world as part of the cinema season 2011/2012.

I am one of these opera goers who is not interested in seeing " a Strip show " but hopes to hear " great voices ", however don´t be too hard on Grigolo,... poor guy ,with all this nudity going on around him .... no wonder the man got a little distressed and cracked on the high B. Disappointed by all the harsh lame comments. Opera needs brilliant innovative exciting dramatic performers like Grigolo otherwise opera will be dead within 25 years (when the current old folks are gone).

Yeah, but they need to be able to sing. That B4 was ugly. I'm sure he can probably do better. Personally I'd take Florez over him any day, even though Duke maybe a little heavy for him...

I agree, perhaps we need better productions, with good acting, but certainly not uber modern productions that have absolutely no resemblance to the actual opera. Also, what we really need are singers who can actually sing the music, and sound like opera singers. I mean from this video, I have trouble believing Signor Grigolor can be heard in the house!

amused and disappointed on how people here think Vittorio has a great voice. wow. what a disgusting production. You hear V's over-light singing voice in his speaking voice, which is high. Great tenors have resonant, manly speaking voices. It's funny how the director and others never speak about voice, vocal technique, or voice quality... in short, V G is a tenorino who should do broadway.

Funny that they can't pronounce his surname correctly. It's not so complicated, I'd say.

What a bad choice for the Duke. his voice is too light. He should be singing Mozart or Rossini. He's been too popularized by the media. His voice will be shot before his prime. I wish him luck. There are so many better choices for the Duke, including J Kaufmann or even Villazon.

Obviously the Metropolitan Opera doesn't agree with you, as Grigolo performed the role of the Duke again this month in New York to rave reviews. Note that nothing mandates that the Duke be an old guy. The role was originally written (by V. Hugo) to apply to Francois I, who was only 20 when he became King of France, and chased plenty of skirts. He died before reaching old age.
