I read that professional ballet dancers make somewhere around 30-35k a year. Why do they get paid so little? They train their whole lives, push their bodies to the brink of limitation, and have to be perfect and elegant while performing in front of an audience. You would think they would at least make 100k. I know people will say they are doing what they love but, damn, that's no money at all. You might as well work an office job and make like 50k or something. I would be pissed if I was a ballerina and people like Kim K makes millions while doing absolutely nothing!
@SheeSpace11 жыл бұрын
It is definitely a shame that dancers get paid so little, but if you are part of a company, you at least get your shoes covered and have support for any potential injuries. The ballet companies rely a lot on funding since ticket sales doesn't cover enough. This is the biggest reason why the dancers don't get paid much. Some of the big name Prima Ballerinas actually do get paid quite a bit though, but this is mostly because they guest at other companies, tour, or are hired for any other outside job. Black Swan portrayed the ballet world in both a true and a not-so-true way (as movies do) I'm just happy that the movie introduced this art-form that I have loved since I was four, to people like yourself. It truly helps keeping ballet alive, which in the long run helps paying dancers more money :)

+Kit I hate what I do now and don't get paid very well. So I know the feeling, but I'm only 24 and I'm working this job to pay off my college loans. Once that is paid off, I'll work one or 2 more years there to save money and move out of my mom's house to chase my dreams. I only have myself to worry about. I'm single with no kids and not planning on having any until my mid to late 40's. So this job I'm working is a means to an end.

This video was released about the time she got promoted to First Soloist and this is probably by far one of the most watched video on their channel and it's sad to say that nothing much has changed. She gave so much for the company (15 years in the company!) and is very well loved performer who never fails to deliever but there's no reason why she hasn't been promoted to Principal yet. Kevin O'Hare has promoted really fantastic people to Principal but it makes me wonder why he has passed her year after year.

Just putting this out there for whoever is doubting themselves about starting too late. It's never too late! I'm fourteen and just started ballet a few months ago. I didn't think I could be a ballerina because I wasn't flexible enough. But that's nonsense! I can now do the splits, ect. All it takes is time and practice, if you want to become professional, don't doubt yourself. Push yourself, push yourself to pursue your dream, as corny as it sounds it's true. Whether you go onto pointe or not, you will still be an amazing dancer. Pointe isn't for everyone, so don't get bummed if your instructor tells you you aren't ready! Pointe takes a lot of ankle strength, patience and practice. You have to keep at it, and whenever your instructor thinks you're ready, you'll be en pointe in no time. c:

I remember seeing her replace Osipova in Sleeping Beauty and thinking that she would be their next big star for sure. But that was 2014, and she's still only a First Soloist? That seems very odd to me. She's been one of their most talented dancers for 20 years! Just checked the ROH programme and she's still cast as the Sugar Plum Fairy - the very role she's rehearsing for in this video. That is generally considered a Principal role, and she's apparently been dancing it for 14 years now, without getting the promotion. I don't really feel like seeing the Nutcracker yet again, but think I might get a ticket just for her. December 7th or January 3rd, if you're interested...

Of course she ate guys, you can't expect her to go an entire day being active without eating...she would've passed out by now.

I enjoyed watching this video so much, Yuhui Choe is truly a precious, she is so beautiful and amusing to watch. I hope that she could be promoted to the Principle soon as she's so talented and hard working.

they are amazing-the physical demands aside, they have such immense discipline-how do they keep all the choreography straight?
@ovaer-callofduty91328 жыл бұрын
+Karen Katz Well, naturally it would follow that they are [ballet dancers] the most developed of human beings, this is a requirement it would seem to me, so it is safe to say her memory is strong, this is how she is able to remember all the choreography and keep it straight in her mind, and the rest would be muscle memory, intuition and technique. She has been with the company for years and most likely she has been dancing from age 10. The most impressive thing I would say is ballet.

I read about it a little. It's like when u rehearse enough then upon hearing the music, the body remembers the moves kind of automatically. But they run into difficilties when the orchestra plays the tune differently. Even principals have the same problem. Or think of a song u know well. The music starts and u blast it out automatically. Of course, ballet is mln times harder😊

Love her accent! She's a beautiful dancer as well, high arches and great turnout. She makes it look like a breeze, and it keeps me motivated to stick with dancing. "Eat well, Sleep well, Be healthy." ~Yuhui Choi :)

I wish I could be a professional ballerina but I've left it too late starting at 13 :( I don't believe I'll ever be on pointe or be able to dance professionally :(

It's really worth sticking with ballet even if only as a hobby. Ballet classes are great for improving lots of things, including core strength, balance and coordination - and they also provide a great opportunity to express yourself through dance and musicality.

LPAP 135: Living the life of a ballerina seems so hard, both mentally and physically... Her life seems so structured, but she's doing what she loves.
