Royce 639 SSB AM CB Radio 1-639

Royce 639 deluxe mobile SSB/AM CB radio. Also known as the 1-639. Data plate on the back of the radio has a build date of June 1978. I forgot about the Royce radios having the build month and year on the back when I made the video.
This radio might use the same board as the Royce 642 base but I haven't verified that.
Another video where I'm long winded. Not sure why the first part is out of focus. I need more video practice.

@bluejay148 They don't interest me anymore and therefore I was never using them. I sold them because I felt it better for them to go to someone that was going to actually use them. For radios with all the extras I prefer my HR-2510, President Lincoln, and my Alan 9001. Otherwise my classic radios do everything I need.

@bluejay148 Maybe a 1N6263 Schottky barrier diode modification might help and possibly a 2SC2999 lower noise floor transistor. I have no idea what exact components in your radio would need to be swapped for the newer upgrades. You will have to find someone more knowledgeable than myself for that.

@bluejay148 No I got rid of my Galaxy and Connex radios. Only later model radio I own is the last version of the Magnum Delta Force and I'm going to get rid of it as well.

I just bought this radio from an antique car show for 40 dollars. I used it barefoot the past few days, on an Antron 99 antenna and shot skip from Northern California all over the upper midwest, south and east coast. I love this radio and I'm very proud of my find.

Nice radio! And yes,The 639 has the exact same board as the 642 base.I love these old royce radios.My favorite is my 632 with the analog dial and lots of chrome..SWEET!!

I don't remember them having 1- anywhere in the model #. I had this radio and used it mobile back in the late 70's probably around 78 or 79. I don't remember what antenna but guessing between a K-40 and some kind of 102" whip. I did a lot of DX mobile with that radio ... had a LOT of fun.

Bought a royce 608 3 months ago with hand book plus A3 size circuit diagram, one othe best rigs out there, even has a tone control plus a very good clarifier, beautiful condition and works well, the 608 are getting rare today

Huh? Do you mean you converted your Royce 639 to a Cobra 3 pin? I figure that's what your getting at because a Cobra 25LTD power cord is the most common style CB power cord in the history of radio.

@gforce4all Thanks. I had a feeling these and the 642 were the same board but never did the research to confirm. I like the 632 as well. I have one but mine is rough and not working. Not sure if I will try to save the one I have or find a nicer one someday.

@bluejay148 NP and Thank you. I check eBay almost everyday and have been for years. I seldom ever see 639's come up for sale. Not on the U.S. eBay anyways. There are a lot of other Royce mobile radios that look almost identical to the 639 but they're AM only like the 611 in one of my other vids.

Thank you Ian. I was very lucky to find and purchase this radio for a really low price. Bad thing is it takes a strange mic plug in order for it to have a volume control on the mic. I need to see if I have another one of those odd plugs so I can make a mic cheater for it. I want to use it more but with just the hand mic it sounds good on SSB but it has weakish audio on AM. A powered mic would solve that. 73's Paul

Yeah that power cable/plug they use is an odd one. Try Ken's Electronics website. They have some vintage CB power cords but I've never looked to see if they have the one for the Royce 639 or not. There are some other Royce mobiles that use that same power cord. 73's Paul

Can these be modified to above channels? Is the inside board the same as the TS-340 Sommerkamp ?

They are large in size but not real heavy. They're much lighter than the slant face Sears SSB, Courier Gladiator PLL, Robyn GT-7, and a few other monster mobile radios. 73's Paul

Can someone tell me what function is the RF/Mod switch??? I am looking for the owner's manual, and I do not find it anywhere.

Its for the meter. RF is the signal strength on receive. MOD is modulation on transmit.

I just bought one of these on eBay. I have been using it mobile for three weeks now. It swings 24 Watts and is dead on frequency. I'm thinking about a power mic as well. Maybe you can post how yours turns out with the power mic. I'm thinking about an RD104e since it's going to be mobile.

Congrats on acquiring one of these fine radios. I made a microphone cheater for mine to allow me to use any 4 pin Cobra/Galaxy wired mic. I've never had much luck with those Road Devil mics as far as sounding good on a radio and I don't have any advice for a mobile power mic for one. Only run base stations now for years. You might want to think about making a mic cheater to allow you to easily try different mics. You can buy one of those 6 pin factory cheater and rewire it for Royce as well. .
