Originally this was gonna be for Royce Da 5'9"'s album Rock City before Eminem gave it to Jay-Z. Royce Da 5'9" & Eminem needed something for Royce Da 5'9"s Rock City album for both of them to be on. They had the song Rock City done already but Royce Da 5'9" didn’t have an Eminem verse and Eminem was executive producing the album, so they did this song together Royce Da 5'9" said “Jay-Z was at a deadline and he had been asking Em to get on something. Em didn’t want to miss Jay’s deadline because obviously he respects him. I don’t think he had time to go in and do a whole new joint, so he called me and asked if I was cool with just giving Jay that one and we’ll just do something else. I was like, ‘Yeah, that’s cool.’ “Why would I feel regret if that’s one of Em’s signature songs? That’s a great thing for him and I don’t think the song would’ve reached the potential it reached with him and Jay-Z if it was me and him because Interscope wouldn’t even clear him for that song anyways. I think it was something where they were willing to give us video rights for ‘Rock City,’ but if they cleared ‘Renegade’ we wouldn’t get single rights. It was a long time ago so I can’t really remember, but I do remember there was a little bit of politics involved to where I’m glad that he gave it to Jay because the song would never have reached the potential it was supposed to reach. It’s a good thing.”

Respect for Royce but with Jay-z that song is not only a good vibe, he made it something referring to his early life with a cold flow.. it’s melancholic. Eminem again with his incredible rhymes skills and word play referring to how he’s seen socially. That’s rap at its best.
@Mad4style7 ай бұрын
I agree... This original version is too broken and disjointed. Royce and Em are rapping about two completely different things and unfortunately it never comes together. On the version with Jay Z, both men stay on overall topic of being criticized in the media for being rappers who came from nothing. Jay Z punches you in the face with his first verse and then tosses the alleyoop to Em whose verses become way more powerful due to Jay's strong opening. People quote Nas about how Em killed Jay on his own song but this version is evidence that Renegade isn't a hit without Jay. Royce verse is cool but his verses belong on another song.
