Part 1: goo.gl/J5zW6U
--------------------------------
In this clip, Royce Da 5'9 discussed rappers getting slighted by the mainstream despite hip-hop dictating American popular culture. He pointed out how Kendrick Lamar's DAMN was a work of art but was slighted by the Grammys for not recognizing it for 'Album of the Year.' However, Royce did say Kendrick's Pulitzer prize victory should be a sign to younger artists as to what can be achieved if you take your craft seriously.
Later on, Royce and Vlad discuss the generational divide in hip-hop, the genre aging, and how artists like JAY-Z, Nas, and Eminem are redefining what older rappers represent. He also went into the difference between making music as food for thought and recording music based solely on the feel or moment before explaining his own process.

Rappers that stick around long enough can make music from a whole different perspective. Royce, Jay-Z, Nas , Kanye , Snoop Dogg are all proof that age doesn’t matter in Hip-Hop. As long as your dope your dope that’s all that matters.

*(IN MY OPINION)* There's a divide because of the internet and social media. I mean imagine if these new age rappers had to put the same amount of work that old school cats had to put in just to get heard. How many of them would be relevant? They benefit from ease of access, but at the same time so do the old cats, but the consumers have set the bar so low as to what they find popular and catchy that lyricism didn't just take a backseat, they stowed that shit under the spare tire in the trunk. Now it's all about how good the beat is, and if there's 1 catchy bar or hook, the song can be complete ass, but if you can jam out to the beat and 3-10 secs of lyrics then it's a win by today's standards. I mean the producers deserve more credit than the artist in today's rap. Anyway, just my thoughts, not facts. I like a few new age rappers simply because conscience or lyrical rap in the gym just isn't the way to go.

Chuck D. was 28 in 1986 when Public Enemy dropped their debut album, Yo, Bumrush the Show! I guess he should've retired in '88 when he dropped It Takes A Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back. But then, we would've never heard, Fear of a Black Planet. Fuck ageism. As hip hop grew, so had the mindset. Biggie said that he didn't want to rap past 30, but I doubt he would've kept that promise had he lived, because he would've saw Snoop, Jay Z, Nas, Wu-Tang and all of his other hot contemporaries extend their careers. The competitive spirit was too great in him.

J Crash well that’s pretty much the most ignorant thing I’ve seen on the Internet today. Let me rephrase it for you. Kendrick’s probably the youngest rapper I listen to. But still there’s a big age gap between him and the other artist I listen to. Also just because someone is a fan of one thing, and brace yourself for this cause it might blow your mind, doesn’t mean you can also be a fan of other things. I am also a fan of football does that mean I’m not allowed to listen to 80s pop music either? Fuck you, people have the right to be fans of whatever they want. Stick minding your own business bitch.

Placing an age limit on how long someone can be a rapper is one of the worst things you can do for hip hop. That age limit should be lifted in order for hip hop to get taken more seriously as a music genre. They don't do that in rock'n'roll, so why hip hop? Its not about rapping that makes a 45 year old look ridiculous, its what he raps ABOUT.

Age never mattered, rappers just fell off with subject matter. Records stop selling then they got booted from the label, some rappers were really good, but got over looked by the flashy ones. Artist started buying labels investing in themselves, for the lucky ones it paid off! 💯

Migos rap sound like they're just fuckin' around. It's apparent in the quality of their music. You can do that when you have a dumb fanbase. The casual fan doesn't want to think or be challenged. That's why the industry standard for a hook that will hit is to write it so that a 5 year old can recite it.

Agreed. The Eagles were a great example Royce Da 5`9 made. I would have used Bruce Springsteen, The Rolling Stones, U2 and Elton John as examples, too. Just as artists in other genres of music have done, Hip-Hop has to be able to mature and grow as the artists inevitably grow older.

Why we put age limits on our rappers? Niggas turn 40 and we be tryna retire them. I guarantee you if you go to a Aretha Franklin show, it ain't no people in the crowd like "get yo old ass off the stage." All these rock groups that are damn near geriatric are still touring. So why we do that to our Hip Hop soldiers? If the music is still great, then why hate? Alot of MCs (Black Thought, Common, Eminem, Andre 3000, Royce...) have grown gracefully in their lyricsm. And honestly the game needs them. Because lyricsm is lacking in the game. At least in the 18-24 age range. They not ready to pass the torch so they have to continue their reign 🤷🏾‍♂️. Y'all be the same ones quick to shout R.I.P. when a nigga die, but didn't appreciate them while they were with us. Still here on Earth, doing what they love to do and what we love then for. Love the ones we got while we got em.

I think battle rap killed the "lyricist" era of the game.Battle rapping Is where Lyrical albums went to die.Don't get me wrong ,battle rappers are dope as fuck ,but none of them want to make albums because battle rapping gives them more control of the money aspect. Some say battle rappers can't make albums ,but I think done right ,they can. They are lyrical enough to keep up the tradition of classic albums like Illmatic ,Akinyele's Vagina Dina and O.C.'S Word Life, but It's not in their best interest.

I gotta slightly disagree. I haven't heard an incredible album from either of these guys in years, especially Eminem who hasn't even had a remotely decent album in over a decade. Of course they still spit great verses when they need to, but I'm not gonna sit here and pretend that they are making music that's even close to being as good as the music they used to make, but then again, that's usually what happens when rappers get older unfortunately.

Unpopular opinion: Nas' album was VERY mediocre. And this is coming from a Nas stan.

This isn't very unpopular, a lot of his core fans aren't feeling it either.

I haven't heard the album Its only 7 songs and I really can't judge 7 songs as an album, so I don't even want to listen , I want at least 40 minutes of material to judge, I think this was nas being lazy, same as pusha T and these other niggas putting these short projects out, give me something I can really rock out to
