Love the Gracie breakdowns, but I want to start seeing some breakdowns of matches the Gracies had trouble in. Like when the Gracies fought Sakuraba. They never talk about those fights. A breakdown of the Royler, Renzo or first Royce fight would be great. I think Sakuraba fought like 4 gracies and i know he was the first person to stop Royce, and Royler. A breakdown of those classic fights would be epic

Plus the breakdown assumes Royce could have defended Severn’s punches. Technique is only going to stop so much and the strength differential was immense. Severn stated he simply did not have it in him to punch Royce and so he eventually ended up losing

Severn said he actually tapped from the arm, not from the choke. Rener was correct, Severn's arm wasn't pulled across. It was trapped on the side. When the Beast tried to pull out, Royce pushed his hips forward, hyperextending Severn's trapped arm. An absolutely epic moment in the evolution of martial arts.

I remember watching the first four UFCs back in the 90s. I watched through the lens of someone who had earned meager green belts in judo, classical jujitsu, and hapkido. Royce was indubitably very impressive in all his fights in the first four UFCs. But part of me wondered if it was like playing rock-paper-scissors game when only Royce knew about paper and everyone else only knew about rock. The moment Dan tapped was the moment where I became a believer that GJJ was truly something special.

Fortunately, my dad bought it on PPV if I remember correctly. I was in high school, my junior year. I was at work when someone came to me and said, "I just saw the wildest thing on Pay Per View." As he described the event (UFC 3) I said, "Wow! I have always wanted to see something like that." And he told me about Royce Gracie who always won. So when UFC 4 came on, I went to watch it at my parents house. It was so awesome! When it came to the fight between Royce and Daniel Severn I was sitting on the edge of my seat the whole time. After that all I wanted to do was learn Gracie Jiu-jitsu.

I can still remember these early UFC fights. UFC IV was during Christmas vacation of my Grade 12 year. I was a Tae Kwon Do Green Belt. Honestly, I was watching to see if the Jiu-Jitsu strategy would fail, my mind had still not accepted the reality that a smaller combatant could win from the bottom. I was still in Jiu-Jitsu denial, until the moment Severn tapped. Now, many years later I am finally able to learn Gracie Jiu-Jitsu through the internet and Gracie University.

Dang!!! I loved it when the UFC came out back in the day. Watching Master Royce representing Jits and showing the world the effectiveness of it no matter how small you were and how big the bad guy was. Being a Japanese Ju Jitsu practitioner, I was so excited to see it being matched up against different fighting styles and dominating them. The Gracies put Jiu Jitsu back on the map as the best form of self defense for anyone... OSSS!

+Mario Carino But that was an old washed out Gracie that didn't know stand up vs prime Sakurabu LMAO
@Parallaxus8 жыл бұрын
+Thai Tran Yeah, Sakuraba was a badass, and had JUST enough information about Royce's technique to just say "Screw trying to grapple with him, I'm just going to spend my prep time for the fight training to keep from being taken down and that should make the fight an easy win". It wasn't an easy or quick win, however, when we see how much stamina and will Royce has. But the golden boy succeeded. That probably would be my favorite match of any in MMA history if Royce had won. Didn't like the Sak. He always seemed way too full of himself.
@ijosef8 жыл бұрын
+Thai Tran Not true. Gracie was 34 at the time and not washed out - he was just facing a more skilled opponent who had be trained in catch wrestling and wasn't going to fall into a submission like so many Gracie had defeated in the past.
@thaitran39858 жыл бұрын
ijosef he was past his prime. It varies with people. His prime was in the early ufc days
@Parallaxus8 жыл бұрын
That's debatable. It does vary with people, but the age range when ppl start to lose their perfect fighting edge can be anywhere from 33-36. Royce was about 34 at the time, so it's hard to say, at least for me, if he was past his prime. I honestly don't know if age was a factor there or not. I do know the Sak was well versed with countering BJJ grappling at this point though. I'm guessing Rickson, in his prime, vs Sak in his prime would have been a great fight as Rickson could fight on his feet as well as use the family recipe BJJ that had been owning people for the last twenty years prior to 2000.

The triangle choke was just one aspect of how Royce Gracie won against Dan Severn,... what really caused Dan Severn to lose was the fact did he got winded. He wore out too quickly. If Dan's stamina level would have been tremendously high he would have won.

My Father ordered that event on Pay-Per-View. After watching Severn's first fight, I thought he was going to win it all. I remember the Gracie/Severn fight being really boring (I was 11 and was used to watching WCW) up until the very end. My curiosity never had me trying to duplicate the triangle choke on my cousins, so I was never really sure how that was able to make Dan tap out. 17 years later, I now know why as it is being applied to me multiple times as a white belt.
@bjj160512 жыл бұрын
Thats great man. One book came up with three styles. Doesn't mean you or I or anyone else has to stick to them. Severn knew almost no submissions at the time of this tournament. He'll tell you that himself and you can tell FOR yourself just by watching. It would be incredibly silly to classify him as a "submission grappler" when he knew no subs. But I think we've exhausted this argument, so....good day!

as far as I know, the Gracie's have never claimed that they "invented" the techniques. What they did was combine a lot of old techniques, modify them, and add a different mind set. It was an evolution rather than an invention. BJJ is still evolving today though, it never stops.

The thing about it is, Hart initially started it because Punk was mad about the ROH incident where he (Hart) did several, unplanned spots that put his coworkers endangered, and posted a LJ entry about it.
