There's an interview out there where Gracie says that he had never been hit so hard in any of his fights. Hackney was one of the first strikers that actually had a strong takedown defense. If he had been a little more versed in grappling, he might've been able to win it.

One of Gracie’s biggest issues was the Gi. While it can be used to help with holds and stuff, it also becomes a trap as we saw here when it gets grabbed, you can’t easily back pedal! I do agree though, a little more grappling game and Gracie may have lost this fight!

the only thing I never liked about Royce was when he submitted someone, he almost always held the submission several seconds after the ref tried to stop it... The guy taps, the ref tries to separate them, and Royce would keep choking or putting pressure on an arm or leg hold... Absolutely one of the best to ever do this stuff, so he never had to be dirty like that at the end... never really liked him because of it.. In this fight he appears to release the arm fairly quick after the tap.

Hackney had experience in Wrestling and JuJutsu, (later submission) his sprawl would be good in ANY era. I've not seen, in over 30 yrs anything in modern training or modern MA that has improved or upped the standard of the sprawl for anyone trained in wrestling at up to even varsity HS level, Catch or other formats of submission grappling (Shamrock's sprawl is as good as any today in his early 90s prime.). There is an exception in judo. With the outlawing of morote-gari (and such like) in competition, their sprawl has suffered in dojos where all sparring follows competition formats.

@@ferntjsf for that yes. Fighters not trained specifically in grappling and wrestling were lost. Today's training has made fighters aware of such attacks and how to counter. They're more rounded and tend to be better (by a wide margin) across the board in fighting skills. There were of course the vintage exceptions: Ken, Don, Sakuraba et al.

@@MrMichaelmikemikeywhat do you mean he didn’t do well after it was banned? He wasn’t even fighting in the UFC anymore when it was banned in 2000 and only returned in 2006 against a well-rounded Matt Hughes for a single match. He only has 2 losses in MMA and only one from the UFC. Besides that, he came back to fight at the turning point of the UFC when the unified rules were written, it was accepted by athletic commissions, and athletes started looking at the promotion as a legitimate career path. Fighters were actually training MMA at that point, not just individual disciplines haphazardly pieced together. Royce was almost 40 years old during his Matt Hughes fight and had very little legitimate training outside of BJJ, even with all of his MMA experience.

Back when it was actually UFC - different fighting styles compete to see who's the best .. Now it's the same shit all MMA fighters . I know things evolved but this was the Golden era for the UFC .. BJ Pen , Anderson Silva , Chuck Liddell , Rampage , Vitor , all those great fighters was the last good generation to watch in my opinion. Of course there's good fighters & fights now but it's not the same .. That's why slap boxing, celebrity boxing etc is growing because the UFC is to cliche now
