This one's pretty classic, I'm surprised I didn't review it earlier.

Nice review. I remember playing the English edition as well, and rather liking it. Had a small group back then, some of those players are still good friends. Have recently considered T&T (either the version I had or a newer one, though they seem to still "feel" like the same game) to start a quick, easy campaign for my little daughter and her friend Tom, that have recently expressed interest in "daddy's hobby". We'll see how that goes :)

Good video. Tunnels and Trolls 5th Edition was 1979, not 1986 and it lasted more than 20 years. What you have there is one of the British books done under license by Corgi. The 4 earlier editions have very similar core rules. The 7th, 7.5 and deluxe are the same core rules but important changes to XP and classes. I like 7.5 best. 7th edition has a type-o in XP that makes it 10 times the XP to improve. Go try T&T, it is great!

Nice. I stand corrected then. It'll teach me to do more research into things.

@@rpgcrawler Not a problem. I bought I 5E boxed set in 1985 and when i went to England in 1985 they had a huge range of T&T (Flying Buffalo Inc not just Corgi) I had not seen in Canada because of how Corgi had brought it to the UK. Back then RuneQuest, Tunnels & Trolls, Traveller and a few others were so much easier to get there than here because Games Workshop brought them over before they did Warhammer Fantasy RPG in 1986. Just happy to bring others to T&T, not worried about being a haardline smartypants. :)

Good review! I've been interested in the Tunnels and trolls system for quite some time, but I've never played it. I like the fact that the earlier modules/adventures released for the earlier editions seem to be fairly easy to incorporate in the latest version. I'm not completely sold on the combat, though it seems effective and streamlined.

The combat takes a little getting used to, but it is streamlined, I'll give it that. And yeah, some of the modules take a little bit more work to adapt, mostly because if you're using the full modern rules, then earlier modules tend to be a bit ... easier. I think there's a number of decent conversions of them though. I'd have to check.

Perhaps the most striking aspect of T&T combat is the death spiral. In most games (based on D&D, anyway) one can always hope to win a combat at the last moment, no matter how badly hurt the character is. Not so with T&T. Past a certain point, you're going to lose, short of near miraculous rolls. I was a bit startled when you pulled out your 5th edition book. My first reaction was: "No it isn't!", as mine was a 'regular' sized softcover. Then I remembered that the 'digest' sized book came out somewhat later. I, too, couldn't find a group willing to play. But I got a lot of the solo adventures and played them instead. But its all gone now, sadly.

I am REALLY interested in playing dT&T, but after reading through the book, there are a few times where the wording of things are a bit confusing. It took me nearly 15 minutes of reading and re-reading the "examples of spite damage", and even then it seems like they could have been phrased much more clearly. Kinda frustrating that I sometimes have to hold my mouth at just the right angle to understand the intent that was being explained by the author. Not to mention that there are several places in the book where a follow-up paragraph says almost exactly what a previous paragraph said, but tweaks the wording enough to make me scratch my head and wonder if that was on purpose, or if it was another editing error. Even still, it does come across as a fairly solid system, one that I am wanting to use in solitaire sessions. Although, The Black Hack may turn out to be more suited for that, not sure.

Yeah, there were a few sections where I had to look at the included examples myself to see what was meant. Spite damage was one of them, I know exactly the section you mean there. I think that some of the issue is that it leaned rather heavily on compiling multiple versions of the game throughout the years and needed way more editing. As for the Black Hack, I really enjoyed the first version, but I still haven't had an opportunity to look through 2nd edition. I'll have to pick it up soon.

@@rpgcrawler I went ahead and got a copy of The Black Hat 2e along with dT&T... and in all honesty, I am very intrigued by the "gritty" feel of The Black Hack.

I’m curious about the combat system as I’m looking to make combat as fast as possible for my house games of dnd
@rpgcrawler
@rpgcrawler 2 жыл бұрын
The basic combat system is dice pool based. There's no 'to hit' or anything like that, rather monsters get a certain pool of dice based on their rating, plus a number of adds, and the players get a number of dice based on their weapons, plus adds based on their stats. There's actually a couple different ways to approach combat listed in the book, but most boil down to everyone rolling their dice plus adds, totaling them, vs. the monster's dice plus adds and totaling them, then the side with the lower total takes damage equal to the difference in the totals. For PCs and npcs with armor, you then mitigate some of that damage with their armor. There's some minor considerations of course, such as ranged weapons and spells not being answered if the enemies have nothing that can reach back, and spite damage inflicts damage regardless of whether your side wins the pool rolls or not. It's not exactly tactical, making for a very abstracted face off, but can be accomplished very swiftly.

Thank you. I tried to be fair and thorough. I haven't really taken a look at the new monsters monsters yet. I probably should at some point, but my interest always kind of leaned more toward the main T&T game than the offshoot.

@@rpgcrawler The original MM had a nice undertone of humor. The new version is trying to be more mainstream. All too many years ago, I started my own reboot of MM but did not get as far as I hoped. It is still on the "someday to do" list.😄 Keep up the good work, we ancient Geeks appreciate it ( I'm 64 and still GMing...)

I miss when rpg systems had humor built right in. And will definitely try! I need to get way more tabletop reviews/commentary up to balance out the computer rpg stuff, it just takes much longer lol. I appreciate the views!
