Origa was a Russian singer named Olga Witaljewna Jakowlewa (Origa is the Japanese pronunciation). She also sang other songs from the OST of Ghost in the Shell SAC. You might like "Rise", one of the other OP of the series. She sadly passed away 2015 from lung cancer. The other singer is Ben del Maestro, who also sang "The End of all things" from LOTR The Return of the King. There is much more, great music from Yoko Kanno e.g. the OST from Cowboy Bebop.

Yoko Kanno's trademark is that she regards the language used for lyrics as one of the tonescapes in her compositions. Inner Universe is sung in Russian, Latin and English. Kanno usually gets a native speaker to sing the lead language, and the lyrics are usually written by a native speaker. Another trademark is that if she can't find a language that fits the sound she wants, she'll fake one that's complete gibberish but sounds like it could be a real language.

on the "Heavy nordic sound" you mentioned i think its beacause its her vocals have the same pattern/sound as a compination of 1:"SAMI JOIK" (upper/northern part of Norway, Sweden, Finnland, and Russia called SAPMI ) and Swedish "Cow-calling" aka "Kulning" there are some videos on youtube ther are good examples of this. atleast thats my oppinion ^^ on why it has a "nordic somberness" to it . glad you liked it, personally its my all time favorite OST of all times thus far (have it saved at mobile phone and my mp3 player so i always can enjoy it) liked and SUB

She does Jazzy stuff like "Tank" from Cowboy Bebop or romantic stuff like "Moon" from "Turn A Gundam". Japanese Anime and games are a treasure trove of exceptional music. Another not so "famous" track is "Earth Resonance" from "Earth Maiden Arjuna", that got me on the first time i heard it. Anyway "Inner Universe" is one of the most intense pieces.

Great mix of russian, latin and english lyrics defining 3 different "moods" in the song, which reminds me of another Yoko Kanno song called Hemisphere, which is the opening song for the anime RahXephon, a mecha anime very centered around music, and the song has 3 moods very defined by different musical styles, with subtle tones that remind of this somg too. The thing about this song that gives me chills every time is what you pointed out about the way they use percussion. The soundscape of a song to me is like the music describing a 3d space to the listener; the difference in frequencies between the low end and high end describe the number of directions the soundwave is travelling, and each sharp sound you encounter is describing a wall that the sound is hitting. Most songs describe a long narrow hallway or a boxy room filled with objects and barriers, but not this song. The percussion uses tons of tiny crackles and chimes, and the base is super warm and smooth, all while violins accompany the INCREDIBLE range of Yoko Kanno and Origa and their legato vocal runs. This song is practically DEVOID of sharp noises. So when you listen to it, it describes a space with thousands of tiny objects and obstructions, but is infinite in all directions. There are no walls. The soundscape of the song puts you on a rooftop in New Port City, letting you take in the sprawling ripples of urban expansion before you dive off that rooftop and slowly fall into the depths. They managed take that animation of Major Kusanagi diving off the roof and blend it into her dive into the ocean, and then transform that into sound. Absolutely BREATHTAKING ever time.

I really enjoy the way you do your reactions; explaining your understanding and things you notice from your experience and background in music. Sometimes helping us notice things we might miss out on or not fully understand. I also enjoy how you seem to try and find something positive to talk about in the soundtracks instead of just giving harsh criticism if you dont like it. Origa is definitely one of my favorites, thanks for the reaction, subscribed!

Man, I love that you love this song. Yoko Kano is the most well known anime music composer. Check out "Tsuki no Mayu" (from Turn A Gundam) and Information High (from Macross). Two of my favorite from her.

Outside of Anime-fans, far too few people get to discover the absolute genius that is Yoko Kanno. So the rare instances of reactor doing YK songs is always a delight. And your appreciation and insight are great fun to watch. About this song in particular, one thing I believe has not been mentioned in the comments before is that the second singer is (then) boy tenor Benedict Del Maestro, whom far more people have heard in Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings trilogy (e.g. the last March of the Ents in The Two Towers). It is also entirely possible that YK drew inspiration from Frou Frou/Imogen Heap, since the Anime came out in 2002, around the same time Heap got famous. Edit: One more thing: Apart from her prowess as a composer, Kanno is also an excellent producer and listening to the songs on KZbin and/or in mp3 is almost not good enough. Listening to Kanno songs in a lossless format and with a good sound system/good headphones makes the music seem even more impressive.

This is one of a few songs in my life that I reacted to physically. Pure goosebumps the first time I heard it. Her voice was absolutely amazing and the composition of the GitS music overall is absolutely astounding.

While Yoko Kanno as the composer and Origa as the singer are usually credited, there's another singer who usually goes uncredited - Ben Del Maestro (who sang the "aeria gloris" part, for example)... he also sang for some LotR music.

And listen to More Origa! Player featuring Illaria Graziano. Or her song called Rise. She's such an incredible vocalist. Shoutout to Frou Frou & Imogen as a vocal parallel also. I love Frou Frou! 🙌🏾❤️‍🔥

Its so nice seeing someone react to this OST specifically. Stand Alone Complex has some of the best music in any anime. Fits the futuristic vibe so well. Would love to see you tackle more off the OST!

Beautiful ❤️ I had to listen very carefully to discern Origa from Ben del Maestro. They complement each other so magically 🥹 I've learned about this music because I was searching for Ben's songs. I'm grateful I did, even though 14 years have passed since this beautiful and unique Goddess died. She was amazing 😭 I'll research for more of her. She left a beautiful legacy ❤

Hey man, always enjoy seeing your take on the things that made my childhood growing up. Growing up on the simple medley-type music of old consoles there will always be a nostalgia for that simple, yet very well-thought-out melodic theory in my mind. A quick thing, love the new window borders for the thumbnails, but, would perhaps advise against using the color red. KZbin does that thing where it has the run-time bar filled out on a video you've watched or began watching at some point. I almost missed this one because I thought I'd already seen it for some reason.

Ah man watching you break down one of my most loved music tracks has made me appreciate it so much more. Really vibing to it with your observations in mind.. Just wow. I mean, I hope I understood what you were saying ;) Watching this and your Megalovania breakdown got me thinking about old Commodore 64 loading music from back in the day. Have you ever looked at the Thalamus Mix-e-Load from games like Delta and Hawkeye? As a kid you really got to feel like you were composing the loading music yourself. Thanks for the content bud, very much enjoyed.

Maybe I'm biased because of the time of my life, but I have a soft spot for all of the early 00s anime opening and ending themes. I love lots of the older and more recent stuff too, but something about the music of that era of anime is just made different.

Truly a legendary song. I grew up on the 80's Blade Runner then Ghost in a Shell, and then as of now consumed by Cyberpunk 2077, Edgerunners and Phantom Liberty. Truly I still believe this Cyberpunk universe is a never ending goldmine.
