@@Toastyfunnyguy There aren't many active rm related channels, so it was nice finding yours back then. I approached many youtubers with game keys for F&H, but not sure if I sent any to your direction... I feel like the difficulty in Fear & Hunger has become a bit of a meme. Now, I'm guilty of having watched a lot of videos before playing and using the wiki. But as it's said in the video: "in Funger, Knowledge is Power." And it's very, very true. The game becomes incredibly easy once you know what to do (get the girl, get the Eastern Sword, get d'Arce and/or LeGarde, get Moonless, style on the Salmonsnake, easy mode unlocked). This is why I'm now avoiding videos on Funger 2 before the new patch gets released so that I can actually enjoy the most difficult part of the game: the learning experience.

@trolololtrololol-v2w True, but you're not dependant on it. If you have the knowledge, you can avoid those issues entirely (guard blocking coinflips is insane). Unless you have astronomically bad luck, you should be able to get an ending very easily if you know what you're doing

One great thing is the coin flip; its not just random chance its a chance you have a choice in, this makes it feel like its your fault. Where as if they were just 50-50s it would be easier to detach, but when you have to choose it feels that much more cruel

I find RPGmaker like GZDoom - most first GZDoom games are just Doom-likes, but with times we have stuff like Hedon 1&2 with it's complex leveldesign and puzzles, Golden Souls 1-3 with it's creative leveldesign and aesthetics, Ashes Afterglow is almost a little RPG at times, Selaco is peak and it's 2024th release. I played F&H when it had sub 300 steam reviews and it quickly became one of my favorites, there's feeling like no other to a game that doesn't care if you understand it or not. As a La-Mulana fan i crave that sht. There's generally a distincion between "Survivor horror" like Silent Hill/Resident/new stuff like Signalis and Crow Country - and walking/running horror games that are mostly about hinding from big monster and solve usually underwhelming puzzles. Mot RPGmaker horrors were the latter, but F&H is more of the former, it HAVE MECHANICS, crazy i know.

My specific point in this video is that the story is all The Coffin of Andy and Leyley has going for it. Good or bad, doesn’t matter, the story is all people talk about. The other parts of the game are undeniably generic, which is in stark contrast to Fear and Hunger. I was aiming to use it to contrast its success with Fear and Hungers to explain why Fear and Hunger is so unique as an RPGMaker horror game.

Its funny because RPg maker horror only died in west. In japan the genre is doing relayicely well as far as I know, largely tvanks to how öopular it is with indie creators😊
@Toastyfunnyguy6 ай бұрын
The genre is still very popular with indie devs in the West and there is a huge market for it, however it has died in terms of innovations within the genre which has led to stagnation. I’d be interested to hear more about how it’s doing in Japan!
@Arcanist_The6 ай бұрын
@@Toastyfunnyguy Ooh that is interesting. I definitely saw a bit of people making those kinds of games when lookin at tumblr blogs, but in general they don't really get the buzz as they used to beforehand, save for Omori maybe (and even that feels more like a "quirky RPG with dark subject matters" ala Earthbound with just some heavy Yume Nikki/RPGMH inspiration). Besides it and Funger, the only other really notable western RPGMH esque game I can think of was Little Goody twoshoes, but that didn't take off as well as Omori or Funger did. Which is a shame, really polished take on the formula that tries something new by mixing in some life-sim segments in between the puzzles and chase-sequences of old RPGMH games. Not to mention the aesthetics of the game are just immaculate The reason I felt that the genre died down is because the last real buzz it was was in 2017 or 2018, so quite a while back. The last real "hits" of the genre that really caught on and got a fandom in the west were probably Angels of Death, Endroll and Hello Charlotte, none of which took off quite the way previous juggernauts did and moreso cult classics. This is for myriad of reasons, whether it be stagnation, the rise of mascot horror and other subgenres, big name youtubers no longer being interested in portraying these games or a lot of the translators no longer being interested in translating these games (VGPersons output greatly slowed down over the years while other figures basically stopped) just to name a few. I am not japanese so I cannot speak for the japanese scene, but based on my understandings, I have noticed a few interesting trends. The biggest of these is perhaps the dial back from horror and pivoting into more to an adventure and story focus, using elements that made the genre popular such as their writing, characters, puzzles and emotional storytelling, but downplaying or outright removing the horror elements. Arguably the most popular RPGMH of the past few years in japanese spheres, the serialized action-chuunifest Noel the Mortal Fate, isn't even really a horror game, instead using the mechanics and structure typical in these games in a different kind of story. The same applies to other popular series such as Case Files of Arne or MaMaiMaiogen (by NTMFs creator). Another notable change is that it seems that most modern japanese RPGMH games seem to follow footsteps of Angels of Death and NTMF being more serialized and telling longform stories with multiple chapters rather than one and done deal. The last notable trend is the abudance of remakes and reimaginings. You probably have noticed how many of the popular classics such as Ib or Witches House have gotten ports, remasters or outright remakes, often for a price. It isn't just purchasable games either as some remakes are made for free: Wadanohara got a while back a free update and both it and Gray Garden are getting remakes, though whether they will be free or purchasable remains to be seen. But yeah. RPGMH and adventure games are deeply interesting: I am curious if there will be a split between western and japanese takes of the genre, where japanese games will follow the book of AoD and NTMF, while western ones may follow more of the classics or Fear and Hunger. well, it remains to be seen.

@@Arcanist_The Really amazing comment, this was super interesting and I appreciate you taking the time to write it out. I agree with what you're talking about, especially that there haven't been RPGMH juggernauts now like there were a decade ago, besides Funger really. The Coffin of Andy and Leyley got very popular, but for different reasons than RPGMH games of the past. It's very interesting to see the changes in what types of games are popular now versus then. There is some overlap, but some change too.
