This time on RRC Restoration I'm taking on the challenge of restoring this barn find 1990 Honda VFR400 NC30. As you can see from the video its in very poor condition and needs a lot of love to get it back to a condition where its deserving of its legendary status. this is going to be a multi part series as there is just so much work to be done and getting parts is very hard these days so doing it all in a single episode would be impossible unless you were willing to wait a year haha.

You're a legend for just thinking about taking on this challenge. My head hurts just looking at all the mixed bag of bolts and screws and what not. You only got two options with something like this. You either go all in and strip everything to pieces and do things proper, OR you dip the whole thing in chocolate and pray someone will take it off your hands for free...

I started a VFR750F RC36 restoration about 6 weeks ago and have thought many a time "Wouldn't it be cool to see an RRC restoration of a VFR?" Bang! Here it is! Very exciting indeed as I've always loved the little brother but they were very absent here in the USA. Very excited to follow this one in particular but I've been a subscriber for a while and any bike restoration is reason to get excited. I've learned a lot by watching your channel. @@RRCRestoration these small VFR's from early 90's are really sought after...as with other so called "Grey Import" bikes from Japan home market...i owned 2 Japan market bikes...a CB1 400 and then a Super4 400...that was the quickest disassembly of a bike i've ever seen...and i'm so eager for the next installment...i've got my KH250B for another project if you like Kawasaki triple strokers...they're quite rare now...and i'm sure viewers would like to see a professional restore of one to your usual high standard...Mark in London

This brings back memories of my scruffy VFR400, it was a runner and ran flawlessly after the carbs were cleaned. It was sold on twice and ended up being sent to the US. Only thing I can recommend is changing the rads for new ones but make sure the top rad is curved, makes hell of a difference.

They are great bikes, I have no idea why they go as cheap as they do, here in NZ you can sell early GSX-R750s all day long for silly money, but clean VFR750s of similar vintage go for less than half the price. I have my eye on an 86 VFR750F (In white) with only 36,000 km on the clock, the guy who owns it has it sitting in the foyer of building, never rides it anymore, its pristine. Ive almost got him convinced him to sell it to me.😄

I once found an NC45 here in NZ at a car sales yard fresh out of a container from Japan, that had been pampered, and someone had spent a LOT of Yen on it. It was dripping in HRC kit parts, the car yard guys had no idea what they had. I got it so cheap because it wasn't running due to gummed up carbs.😄

Love these little V4 Hondas, one of the best bikes i ever owned was one. Back in the early 2000s while passing a car yard that used to import 2nd hand cars from Japan to NZ, i spotted a bike sitting at the back of the yard, i could see it was a RVF400, the model after this one. It was mint, but what caught my eye was the full TSR (Technical Sports Racing) exhaust with under and over mufflers and a Suzuka 8hr style single offset headlight fairing. They said it had just come in with a container of vehicles. It wasn't running, but they said they were going to look at it "when they got around to it". I made a ridiculously low offer, and he accepted. Got it home and was blown away, someone in Japan had spent serious Yen on this bike, apart from the trick exhaust and bodywork, they had fitted HRC ecu, airbox and jet kit, and bigger top and bottom radiators. The only thing i had to do was clean the carbs, (it had been left to sit with fuel in them, hence why it wouldn't start) and fit a Nitron shock and fork springs to suit my weight, they come with soft suspension for smaller Japanese riders. That bike was amazing, down a twisty road it was stunning, and no slouch down the straights. Was dynoed at 68hp at the rear wheel, I ended up selling it to a guy who had pestered me to sell it to him, the whole time i owned it, big mistake. Can't wait for this resto.

I had one of these and it was great fun. One thing I can recommend is to replace the rear 18" VFR wheel with a 17" RVF one. The stance of the bike is so much better and the tyres are cheaper. They are a direct swap and the same style. There is a company which makes them new as copies of the original. Just a quick Google search will find plenty of them.

The quality of the Japanse domestic market bikes is/was far higher than those officially imported. V4, alloy cradle frame, single side swing arm just superb. I'm more than certain that you will restore it to showroom standard.

Such a great bike as you rightly say iconic, I'd love to own one. It's a crime for someone to let it get into such a poor state. Kudos for resurrecting it.

Never saw a VFR 400 in Oz. What an insanely complex little bike. This is going to be an epic Restoration.

I’ve owned a couple Vfrs and they really were a jewel of a motorcycle. The build quality along with the fit and finish was excellent. Shame that this one was treated poorly. Thankfully it is in good hands now. Looking fwd to the transformation. Fan from Nova Scotia, Canada.

It seems to be the common theme among previous owners of this bike is the fit and finish was second to none at the time, I really hope i can get this one back to that high standard :)

Really looking forward to seeing this little beauty brought back to life. I rebuilt one many years back and cooling was a real issue, I think I saw some nice corroded radiator fragments in one shot, so I would bet on your overheated diagnosis being correct. Good luck getting some serviceable radiators and getting her running sweetly again!

So excited for this! I always loved the Honda V4s. I had a VF500F2 many, many years ago. Had to rebuild the engine when it ate its own big end bearings. Amazing sound when you wind them up. Good luck!

This is going to be an awesome re build, I don't envy you having to sort those plastics dude that's for sure! I had an inport 400 as my first post test bike, you could rev it to the moon and back all day long.

You know what I find particularly incredible? (Aside from the knowledge & dedication on display in all your vids) I've watched every minute of all your vehicle restorations and I don't recall ever seeing you drill a bolt out. You'd think that when striping back like its day 1 on the assembley line you'd at least find one troublesome bolt that requires some old timers tricks, especially rusty allen bolts. Some magical voodoo going on here 😅 love your vids, checking every other day for the next one

My friend had one of these in the 90s, they are very small as I remember and I found it difficult to ride being over 6 foot, at that time I had a VFR 750 and no way could keep up with him on the 400 scratching around the Lincolnshire countryside. Looking forward to this restoration.

Jeez, as a big fan of 90’s sport bikes (I own 6), this is a mountain of work! 😮 These bikes are getting rare, and their values are rising, but… I always try to buy the best possible condition. It usually turns out to be the most cost effective way. Great video, nice to watch someone else work 😄👏🏼
