My kid has a glass eye. She was born without one eye so my wife and I got her a glass one. We told her to never take it out in school as it might freak out the other kids. Her class was doing the eye test today and the teacher said to remove all glasses. My daughter, being my kid, took out her glass eye, effectively freaking out several 7 and 8 year olds. I was called and as we were leaving my daughter cried out, "Mommy, my eye is missing!!" scaring several other kids. My wife and I decided not to ground her because that was a power move

In defense of US libraries, they have to pay much more for books than we do, hence the higher prices. Many of the hardcovers are specially bound for greater use, and the paperbacks are given protective covers. On top of that, some publishers force libraries to pay higher prices because that one book is read by large numbers of patrons. MacMillian Publishers refuse to give libraries their most recently published books for a long time so people who are desperate for the book will buy it. Digial copies disappear off the virtual shelves after a specific number of uses or a period of time so the library must buy it again. The libraries answered this by no longer buyng any of their books.
@hopeh26094 жыл бұрын
Agree! Not only that, but libraries must process the books when they come in. They don't come with the protective plastic covers, the call numbers or the barcodes. Library employees must match the MARC records with the book, register the barcode for that book, etc. Every single book is a lot of work. We charge quite a bit for books which are damaged irreparably because it is going to cost the library a lot of time and money (in the form of salaries) to replace a book. Damaging a book is bad enough, acting like an asshole on top of that just sucks!

We offer them services they can't get anywhere else. My library, because of budgets, is pretty old fashioned as libraries go, but I still offer free computers, use of smart pads, free super high-speed wifi, power banks/cubes for folks to recharge, etc. I wish we had the budget to offer a "library of things" where people check out items they occasionally need but can't afford (like stand mixers or drills, etc) or that I had the space or money to incorporate a maker's space like some libraries. Those things might not seem important to you,, but to the poor or just those who live in very rural areas with little to no internet access, the library is a vital part of their lives. 11:00 What I've learned at literally every job I've ever had is that doing well does NOT earn you recognition, instead it earns you more responsibility. Doing poorly does not earn you any sort of punishment, it just earns you the expectation of doing poorly. Therefore, it actually pays more to be bad at your job rather than good at your job. And I hate it.

So when I'm older I should just not do hardly anything at my job when I get one?
@Richard_Nickerson4 жыл бұрын
@@sarahcerar8049 Depending on the job, yes. This is more something you need to assess on a case-by-case basis. I would say, always do well but not above and beyond at the beginning. Find out from coworkers how things run. Be observant. From there, figure out which course is best. When it comes to customer service and retail, this is basically a universal rule. When it comes to other profession, this could be terrible advice.
@Boredchinchilla4 жыл бұрын
Sarah Cerar I have taken a few jobs where my immediate boss had moved up from the entry level position I filled, and told me that I should not do the best job I could because it would then let the higher ups know that everyone before me had halfassed the job. In one job, one of my tasks was to run the mail through the meter and drive it to the post office. The first few times I did this, I drove straight to the post office and came right back, which took under an hour. Several people commented on how fast I must have driven, since the task usually took 3-4hrs for everyone else before me. The HR person actually brought me into their office and reprimanded me for SPEEDING!! Even though they had no proof that I had done so, and nobody had seen me driving fast ever. When I asked my supervisor, he said that he used to bring several coworkers with him and take a long lunch at a strip club, and everyone who had the job before me did the same (not the strip club, just taking much longer than necessary). I decided it wasn’t worth fighting over, and started to go shopping after dropping off the mail, since the alternative was to be written up or even fired for doing the job in the actual time it took. I would go and run the mail in the morning rather than sitting in the break room drinking coffee (where everyone could see me in the office at 8am even though I wasn’t doing my job if I was doing this). The one time in 2yrs that my alarm didn’t go off and I was 15 minutes late, they called and told me that I was fired for being “repeatedly late”- nobody had ever told me I was late and I was never actually late, but because I was in a back room running mail they decided I had to be late (I even told them to check the time stamps of when the mail was run every morning, but I doubt they did so). From then on, in every job that I had I made sure that I only did exactly what I was told to do and did it just like the person before me did, even if there were methods to do so ten times faster or more efficiently.
@Richard_Nickerson4 жыл бұрын
@@Boredchinchilla Yup! Every time I've ever improved efficiency or done better than the person before, that's only made things worse for myself, because then I'm being compared to myself rather than the last person who was always slow and/or incompetent no matter which job it was. "No one's ever swept the back so well, that's your job from now on" then "what's taking you so long to sweep?" Well, I did such a good job the first time because I took my time to do it thoroughly... it either gets done fast or well, it can't be both. But then they demand it be both. "No one's ever restocked this area so fast, this is your job from now on" then "what's taking you so long to restock this area?" EVERY SINGLE TIME even when there was literally twice as much stuff as the previous time. When I worked in fastfood, I did the window where you have to be fast, and I had to keep orders under 2 minutes. I broke the store record and the district record for lunch times on the same day, then someone got cocky and broke my record and bragged to me about it, and then I broke his record which also broke the region record. From then on, I was never fast enough for anyone, no matter how fast I actually was. You get a half-assed "good job" when you do well, but you get half a dozen people reprimanding you when you do less well (not even bad, just not as good as usual). You see idiots get promoted while you're stuck in your position despite being better at the job than they are all the time. Being an adult sucks.
@boocrimson77204 жыл бұрын
It only pays to be good at your job if you know people who vouch for your good work while job hopping. It will never pay off staying in one spot unless you are able to and do work your way into higher management and that's what really peeves me. People value loyalty and will question if you leave a place when you move on, but being good at your job in a place you are loyal to often doesn't pay off any more unless there are lots of rewards or promotions in place for you somewhere. If not it arguably pays more to not care and be lazy, or to move around where you can get better positions in new places and then you sometimes get called out by new employers for it and it sucks cause that isn't fair. Company loyalty just doesn't pay off anymore cause they treat new employees like replaceable commodities. It pays off most at a lot of corporations to just barely not suck just enough to set low expectations for what you have to do cause they move people up based on seniority and position more often than work based at corporations and everyone gets paid the same reguardless of what they do and as long as you perform at the baseline of what you need to do you aren't expected to go above and beyond, but won't be terminated for not doing your best. That is what is frustrating. And that leaving for something better pays of the most but is questioned. Like I want to be an animator but they want experience in the industry that is hard to get starting out but when they see you've gone through a lot of other places for previous work they question why you've worked so many places. Like I apologize that a permanent place in a fast food chain was not my speed but that it is hard to get a job in the industry when I need 5 + years in the industry first lol.

Yeap, Also the price seemed to be 1.5 times the price of the book... At my school there was the policy that if text book is damaged too badly you had to pay the triple the value... As far as I remember I did not get them too damaged and over course of 9 years only few cases where students had to pay for the books, but it was then really badly damaged. Minor damage to the book happens over course of the school year still, even if wrapped in protective cover especially if you have to carry the books to home and back to classes each day. In theory school could have enforced this rule for the family who lost their house in fire and obviously textbooks are not the priority to save, but that would have been really Richard move, taking into account this family had 4 students in the same school. I guess they kind of cover that kind of loss of books from the "funds" other students pay for badly damaged books and of course there are funds for them anyways from the government balance.

The last post: I'm so glad my college doesn't do this stupidness. They let us print whatever we want and don't charge us. They say it's included in our Full-Time tuition which is how all colleges should be. And I mean our base tuition excluding any fees. The tuition money that goes to water bills, toilet paper, lighting, professor's salary, etc. We even get free tutoring for all classes! Plus lockers at no extra fee. OK, that librarian story? The user was wrong. When you damage a book, you get a fine to replace it. You don't purchase the book you've damaged. He didn't own anything and they didn't have to give him anything either. (as for the value being different from what was printed on the book, that happens when the price changes and you can no longer purchase the book at the old price)

Library Science student here. If I were in charge, I would have disciplined the staff member at the counter and given them more training. What many people don't realize is that many front desk library staff are actually minimally trained volunteers or minimum-wage, part-time, workers due to budget cuts by skinflint town councils that don't value education as highly as they should. On the other hand, the patron also needs to stop being a Karen. The cost you were quoted is not the cost of the edition you failed to bring back on time, but the cost of replacement. Just because there is a price listed on the back of a book, that does not mean it is the cost of replacement. That price on the back is the cost of the book at the time it was printed. Not only do the prices of new copies constantly change, libraries are often contractually locked into a purchase agreement with a single supplier. The supplier sets the prices, not the library.

Something irked me a bit so a note for people who get upset about paying more than retail for damaged books: the reason you pay more than the price of the book is because in addition to ordering a replacement for the book you damaged, the library charges for the cost of processing the book - including laminating, qr security tags, barcodes, etc. and compensate for the time tending to this book that would have otherwise been on shelves. My library charged $5 for processing and it sounds like this one did as well. If you find the exact same book (ISBN) for cheaper than retail somewhere else as a replacement, you only have to pay that processing fee. Please, don’t give library assistants grief for your mistakes. I promise, they hear enough tirades through the day. That person sounds like they got someone on a bad day and instead of telling her it was fine to leave the sticker just continued to prod. They probably weren’t even going to reshelve it when they kept it but just assumed she wouldn’t want it since it was so damaged. The mom with the textbook was just straight annoying. She should have received her book but trying to get out of paying for it and then ripping it up to be spiteful was just petty

I had a history book in 8th grade. I loved history back then and still do. Somehow, can't remember the details it was damaged. I saw this before I left for school and told my mom, "I'll pay for this book out of my allowance, but I'll want the book to keep for myself." I really did love history. My mom agreed saying, "If you pay for it, it's yours." I showed the book to my history teacher after seeing its condition, she said, "That's unusable. You or your parents will have to pay for it." I said, "Sure, no problem. But if I pay for it, then it's my property and I get to keep it." She looked at me as if I had grown a second mouth and both of them were talking. She finally found her voice and said, "That book belongs to the school district." To which I replied, "Sure. Unless I pay for it. Then it belongs to me." She got the principal involved and he said, "You owe us for the book. That's seven dollars." (This was back in 1974, I think). I pulled a $5.00 bill and two $1.00 bills out of my wallet and said, "Hand the book over and this is yours." He said, "You pay for it and we keep the book. Or we can call your parents." Me: "You're not dialing yet? Do you want me to dial the number?" He looked disgusted and called home. My dad was at work so my mom comes in and asks what is going on. When the principal tells her that I refuse to pay for the damaged book, she looked at me and said, "Is this true, Kelly?" I said, "Kind of. They want me to pay for the book and the school keeps it. I have the money right here ready to pay for it, but if I can't keep it, then I'm not paying for it." Ma said, "So you want to steal money from my child? Not going to happen. Hand over the book and she'll pay for it. Or keep the book for your district and she pays nothing. Decide. Take too long and you'll keep the book while she keeps the money." The principal shook his head, held out the book in one hand and held out the other hand for the money. I paid for it and kept that book for years. I could recite whole sections from that book from memory. Concerning the story with the electronics store, so many of these bosses are so greedy, making a profit isn't enough for them. They want to make a killing. I've go no kick to any business making a profit, but if you can't pay your employees a decent wage and still make a profit then you are doing something wrong. With the person who had the prosthetic eye, there's no way I would question them after they apologized and stepped back. I would just say, "No harm, no foul. Not being able to see on that side must SUCK." Then unless I was in a tearing hurry like a life threatening situation, I'd say, "Go ahead. I'm in no rush."

One of my managers whom is also the scheduler decided to throw away my schedule request change because he likes to copy and paste the schedule week after week and this will cause him to have to change it. Not only is he ignoring my schedule change, he has managed to mess up every single time off request I've made since I've started 9 months ago. My anniversary, he didn't give me 2 of the requested days off and forced me to find someone to cover for me, which no one can since I'm also a manager and all our managers work full time and won't work extra hours. I used to have frequent nosebleeds through middle and elementary school. I was reading a book that I checked out and renewed frequently because I liked it so much and reread it on a near constant basis. Well, I felt something dripping down my nose and saw a drop of blood materialize on one of the pages. I realize "Oh no" (I was in middle school and more innocent than most people. I didn't know any curse words) and go to the library. The librarians were all friends with me and were totally understanding, saying I didn't have to buy a new book. Well, I felt bad enough that I did and the librarians told me I didn't need to do that but still accepted it. I got to keep the book I had bled in.

@lllaml07 Жыл бұрын
In the librarian's defense sometimes you can't replace a book for it's original price and it does cost more. I'm an assistant librarian and a big part of my job is sourcing new books and replacing lost/damaged books. I always try to find the best deal even sourcing from used book sites, but sometimes books are exclusively published and only available from that publisher/seller and you have to add in shipping costs and tax if applicable. So yeah sometimes that sticker price on the book is not the actual replacement cost.

Library Book OP damaged a book, they shouldn't have been upset that they had to pay the full price that the library had to pay for it. Even the slightest amount of liquid damage, even if fully dry at the time of return, can result in the book growing mold and that mold spreading to other books nearby. Yes, by paying for it the book was their's and the librarian should have just used a black pen to scribble out the labels, not tried to remove them. But still, don't whine about paying the full price the library paid for the book.
