I the first story, the reason he wanted to make it look like the family was intact was because in Chinese culture family is insanely important (it is in many Asian cultures, but I know China for certain). So for him to abandon his family looks horrible and could create barriers in socializing with the business class. To explain how important family is, a "perfect" home in China has 5 generations living in it. The Chinese language has specific words for each family member that changes based on their position and yours. Example: the word for 'uncle' in English is the same whether you are the brother of the mother or father. In Chinese not only does it change based on which parent the uncle is related to, but whether they are older or younger and where they fall in birth order. It is crazy hard to learn.
