My dad used to drive a truck and did something similar with his contracts so he wouldn’t have to unload trucks. It’s called lumping. Back in the day you’d see contracts that said “no lumping freight.” One summer I was with dad on the truck as usual (I was about 9 or 10). And we had a load of those little personal sized watermelons. The dock manager was a little man with a Napoleon complex that kept screaming at my dad that he was going to unload the truck. My dad is a big guy (6’4, ~250lbs) and he kept pointing out, calmly, that the contract said the driver wasn’t to touch the freight. My dad’s calm demeanor just made Napoleon even more angry. Napoleon shouted “You’re going to unload this freight or you’re going to get off my property!” Dad said “Okay. Annie, get back in the truck.” And we left, leaving Napoleon with his mouth hanging open. Dad called his boss and asked what to do. His boss laughed and said that because he ordered us off his property, the produce was undeliverable and was property of the trucking company now. He assured dad he’d deal with the legalities, but for now just set up on a street corner somewhere and sell the melons. So we stopped by a grocery store and got a poster and a marker to make a sign. The thing is, we sold them for what they had cost back home. And apparently they were cheaper back home near the Mexican border where they’re grown than in the northeast where we were. We put up a sign selling them for $2 each (it was the 90s). When someone came screeching up while we were still taping up the sign and asked if we were serious and the said he would be back in a minute with his pickup, we realized we priced them a little low, lol. Apparently they were $7-9 in the nearby stores. The stores the place we were supposed to deliver to would then distribute to. We had people filling up their backseats and pickup beds with watermelons and we sold a whole trailer full in a Saturday and a couple hours on Sunday. Dad’s manager let us keep half and we used it to go to Six Flags. So, thanks Napoleon.

On the thesis colored photos story: we Germans have a saying that goes: Buy it cheap, buy it twice. It's basically what happened to the customer in this story. He bought a low quality cheap thing, realized it didn't get the job done and had to buy another one.

@vgamesx1 2 жыл бұрын
I don't disagree with the saying but you know, sometimes a thing only needs to be good enough or only used a couple of times, like an extra long or certain type of screwdriver bit, so occasionally cheap is the correct choice.
@HalfEye79
@HalfEye79 2 жыл бұрын
That is quite tricky, because sometimes an expensive item and a cheaper equivalent are from comparable quality. So, it can be, that you only pay extra for the name. But there are also brands, which work for nearly a lifetime or longer. In my youth, it was hip to have jeans from a specific brand. The jeans My parents bought for me, weren't from that brand, but from a equally or more fitting quality and they were much cheaper. The only thing, that was so special about that brand is the label. A tiny piece of cloth with the name on it.

the place I worked at for three years would have the truck there by 5AM, we didn't start unloading trucks till between 8:30AM - 9AM. We would also not even touch a truck until the foreman signed the paperwork to let us unload. Sometime we would not even start working till 10AM And sometimes the order was wrong so we would not even unload the truck. There were a few time i got there at 8AM only to only be sent home because the truck order was wrong and we were not unloading any that day. Another time i was sent home because the truck was not gonna reach us until about 1PM. that is 5 hours of no work they are paying us for. Dumpster was empty and warehouse was pretty clean (We swept up and tidied up the pallets) but after that we were sent home so the night shift could empty the truck. (Which did not arrive until 4PM) The whole time these truck are waiting, they get paid, even if it is the wrong delivery because they are given a contract to deliver. To this address. If the customer does not accept the deliver that is not the driver's fault. So while it took us about 2 hours to unload a truck, that is still about 5-6 hours of wait time they get paid for. (We found the drive asleep in his cabin a few times. (Most had abed in the back of the cabin with blackout curtains, so no need for hotels, just sleep in the truck.

Bro. I work at the same coffee shop. I always asked how many "cream and sugar" because a majority of our customers are ignorant or spoke the bare minimum English. The most irritating customers were the ones who had no clue what they actually wanted. Some lady held up the line for 10 minutes. That may not seem like a lot. Unless you consider that the 10 minutes were before she STARTED ordering. Understandably, the customer behind her got super pissed. So pissed in fact, that he drove around her to make his order at the window. He literally wanted a single coffee and a single donut. The lady started cussing at him and he cussed back. This went on for 2 miraculous minutes before my coworker started recording. Unfortunately, he only caught about 40 seconds of uninteresting shit. Her single order brought up our average time (per customer) by around a minute. Luckily, this was closing shift, which meant less customers than morning shift, so we were able to get rid of the rest of the line in a couple more minutes.

That first story is awesome. I'm a dog groomer, and it's very common for groomers who work at salons to have at least a few clients on the side from previous jobs, friends and family, or deals made in the past. We work on our side clients on our days off, usually at home or the client's home. I have a friend who hates grooming on her days off SO MUCH, she's still willing to do it, but she charges $1000 per groom on a day off. Believe it or not, some of her wealthier clients have gone for it, usually for special occasions: "Fluffy was supposed to be the flower dog, and we thought she would look great, as is, but looking at her 2 days before the wedding, she can't be in pictures like this! We can't find an appointment at a salon on such short notice." or "We had Sparky groomed last week so he would look nice for our family photos tomorrow, but he got out this morning, and I don't know what's all over him, but he's filthy." If they're willing to pay, it works out great for everyone.

I once heard a story about a company, that did truck deliveries. I don't know how accurate my 'informant' was, but it's a good example in any case. The management did an interview for the position of the person deciding the truckers routes. They were deciding between 2 people. A young person (Andi) fresh from university with lots of knowledge, but no experience and an older person (my 'informant' Boris) with no college degree, but many years of experience. Boris warned the company, that hiring so with no experience would run a high risk of mismanagement and drive their truck drivers away. He predicted, that Andi would make the mistake of ignoring unloading times and demand too much from the truckers and not listen to their complaints. Since Boris had the experience he knew to listen to the truckers. They chose Andi anyway and Boris went to a different company. A few months later a trucker acquaintance, that had worked at the hiring company, called Boris to ask him, if he had needed a trucker... Turns out, that what Boris had predicted came to pass. The truckers had too long routes and had to work too hard. Andi didn't listen to the truckers complaining. So they started looking for better jobs. After a few months the company had lost most of it's drivers and was in serious trouble. According to Boris they called him begging him to help, but he refused. It was too messy. Again, I don't know, if it's true or not. Boris told it to me after I expressed thoughts of going into the industry - after getting a logistics degree. He suggested an apprenticeship instead. He was an experienced trucker though and had some funny stories to tell.

I can totally relate to the 2. Story. I do not know how many times i heard from people who finished university but what i remember from most of them: They only make things worse because they set themselves over the people with practical experience. It is good for you if you can manage a better system for the work but at first you should always know what you really change by it and if it would even work in that way. i was an apprentice in an office for a storage building and we had a change in the operating system which was required by our client. Due to the missing parts in the new system we were unable to print the labels with the new one and needed another way for that part. One of the leader from my group said that his son (he went to one of the higher universities) will do an excel-based file for the company so we can work with it. Because in my view as someone who offer free time for that to get more chances i worked on a separate file. After one weekend His son send him the file and so both of us presented two versions for the labels. His son used macros to make a file that automatically creates multiple tabs with the needed file which was interesting to see. But the problem is that every time someone printed labels he needed to close it after without saving otherwise the file did not work anymore. My option was not so fancy but i just made a simple Label design and put in a command which registers how many should be printed and also counts them from 1-X according the number from pages. This one was at the end the version my company used due to be simpler and faster than the one of my leaders son with more features. That situation and similar others teached me that it is useless if you go 2-5 years to school but leak practical experience and believes that you are above people who do the work on front for over 10 years.

I had a similar incident at a bank once... I'd gotten $30 out of the ATM (my bank's ATMs dispense 1s, 10s, 20s and 50s), but instead of getting a $20 and a $10, I got a $20 and a $100 bill. I went into the bank to try and explain the mistake, but they insisted that it was impossible for me to have gotten a $100 bill out of the ATM and they made vague allusions to me probably trying to pass them a counterfeit (?? Why would I try and trade a counterfeit $100 for a $10?) So, I just shrugged and left. A week or so later, there was a news story about that branch. Apparently someone, somehow, had loaded the $10 bill cassette with $100 bills, and they ended up losing something close to $100,000 because of it.

And good Comanders will understand this is a good and valuable learning experience for a Lieutenant and will go light on them. I was the IT guy for a packing & shipping company. During a summer shutdown I was kept on for a bunch of special projects. Our salesman (a drunk) comes up one day and hands me a letter of introduction to our company and a packet of info about our services. "Print this up and I'll give you 100 addresses to send this to. So I read his letter. . . What a cluster fuck. SO many misspellings! The 2nd paragraph referenced information in the 5th paragraph. There was so much wrong with this one page introduction. He had the wrong number for our company in three places! I rewrote it. Brought both copies to the VP, a friend. Told him "One of these was written by YOUR salesman the other is mine. Which one do you want sent to potential customers?" We both went to see his dad, the owner/president and asked him the same thing. HE was pissed at me for presuming to question the quality of his trusted employee. He was even more pissed when we told him the coherent letter he picked was mine. He made several meaningless changes to put me in my place and said to send it. Then I had to deal with the salesdork coming up and screaming at me, how dare I change his perfectly good letter (the man reeked of gin) when the boss came up, said he asked me to reword the letter. Salesguy quit over this. Two years later they were still using my letter when I turned in my notice and was moving out of state.

The printing stories 😂 I’ve been doing that for 20 years now and have SO MANY OF MY OWN! Some people are just so dumb, but to my credit, I do my best to inform people about certain print places *cough*VistaPrint*cough* doing a terrible job with orders that I’ve personally had to reprint at my shop. Most listen, some don’t. All I say when they come back is “I did say…” 🤷‍♀️ To each their own.

That coffee senior's discount story... I hope the guy made the senior's coffee black and left it that way, on top of dropping the coin into it. And too bad he didn't see the result, as then he could have been there to get yelled at and respond "You only ever told me you wanted the senior's discount, NOT how you wanted your coffee" and see her face.

Similar experience here with a bank, but other ending... 😉On vacation in the US in the late 1980s our travellers checks were nearing the end, so we had to exchange same cash from our Austrian Schilling (ATS) to USD. The teller at the bank wasn't allowed to do that, so she called her supervisor who asked us into the back office. She made a call for the current exchange rate (while waiting she remarked the brand new notes with a "Pritty!") and finally ask if we wish the money, large notes, small notes, mixed? Mixed was fine for us. She got the money, counted it twice and in front of us, shove the thick bundle over to us (well, 1$ bills look the same as 100$ bills, not usual for us) and we all said our good byes. But the back of our brain said something was wrong. Back in our RV we realized it: Way to much money! In retrospect the messed up with a decimal, something like .1 instead of .01! Of course we went back and the supervisor went pale, when she heard there is a problem. As she realized we came to bring money back, she jumped between panic and relief back and forth. More phone calls, longer phone calls, discussion on the phone. Well, finally we got our money a second time, this time a believable amount, but still a little bit to much. We don't know if it was a wrong exchange rate the second time, or just the best exchange rate ever as apology (AFAIR about 20% above our expectation). We didn't try it a third time. 😉

The coffee one reminded me of when I worked retail. I was on register and my coworker was in the kitchen. An old man came in and asked the kitchen staff how much the burgers in the warmer were. She said $3. He demanded she make him a fresh one so she did. 15 minutes later he is pissed about waiting but it was his own fault so he did not chew out the cook. I could tell that he was not in a good mood so when he threw $3 in cash at me I decided not to charge him tax on his burger. However, because food rings up with tax already applied I had to calculate how much of a discount to give him so the tax would bring the charge right back up to $3. It took me no time at all but he noticed I hit an extra button to add the discount and he freaked out that I was wasting his time just like the cook. I was so flabbergasted I just stared at him as he ranted that he was basically paying my salary and deserved top notch service. I actually tried to argue that his measly $3 was not going to pay anyone's salary and I'd actually done him a favor by not charging him tax but of course he would not listen so I just adopted the. "Have a nice day" attitude. He ranted for a while about how I should feel lucky to have a job and he was good friends with the owner. I said good day again, hoping to never see him again. A week later I was helping my sister bring care packages to senior's in assisted living and he was there to visit his sister-in-law. She was extremely friendly but he either did not recognize me or pretended not to. Strangely the next time he came into the store he did recognize me from the retirement home and was extremely nice.

The senior discount coffee lady reminds me of when I worked at a Food Lion Deli for 5 minutes once (actually like 6 months). It was post 2008 Recession and the only work I could find at the time. This old battleaxe came in and said "I want a pound of Shredded... Sara Lee.... Shredded Sara Lee". Me: What kind? Her: Sara Lee Me: Okay, well Black Forrest Ham? Turkey? Smoked Turkey. Her: SHREDDED SARA LEE.. (yelling at me at this point).. Me: Well I'm pretty sure Sara Lee is dead but I'll go find her body and dig it up for you and see what we can shave off of her. I just walked outside to get a smoke. We didn't have a deli manager at the time, but the grocery manager basically covered for me because she gathered how rude that lady was based on how she complained about me, but honestly I fully expected to get fired when I came back in from my smoke. Apparently the grocery manger went to the deli counter to fill the order and the old woman pulled the same routine for 2 minutes before she finally got it out of her she wanted Sara Lee ham.

All but one (the place OP worked) is intentionally bad so everyone would go the only good one and pay the high price when they realize the cheaper options was awful. When I was 19 I took my paycheck to the bank to cash. One of my high school friends mom was a teller. Turns out that branch was robbed in the morning. My mom’s friend just opened up her window. Placed my paycheck in her window and asked for 10 $10 for lunch money. As I checked it she had given me 10 $100 bills. Knowing what had happened. I 😮Quietly ask to twenty $5 dollar bills. Her face turned white when she saw the hundreds she gave me. The teller fixed her error as I talked about how her son was doing. No one else was in line. She said thank you and then had to go to the bathroom. We never spoke about it.

Large companies have OR models that figure contingencies to a fraction of a fraction of a percent. That can mean some wild swings in hourly pay. This is why travel nurses make 3x more than staff nurses. For the rare incidents where they are needed, it's cheaper than hiring a full-timer. $1500 for unloading a truck? Worth it if the sales justify. Pilot pay going up 3x in short time windows.

That first one seems quite excessive on the amount he may have earned though. 20 pellets takes 20-25 minutes to unload with a truck at most, if they are put with the short side in. Even with a manual pallet jack, it would take like 50-60min to unload.

Story 1 sounds like complete BS. I work for a school district warehouse and recieve multiple trucks per day. We only have 1 reciever on staff to accept the deliveries and sometimes multiple trucks try to deliver at once. We tell them to WAIT in line or off load it yourself since we have only one man on staff to do this. No way in hell would we sign ANY form of paperwork if a trucker handed it to us to off load anything. And if he said they couldn't wait because he "had to make his next stop" and left well then thats on his dime because we never refused the load, we simply told him to wait. Appointments only bud. Story 1 sounds way too farfetched
