The last story reminded me of my all-time favorite embezzler, Rita Crundwell. She was the comptroller for the city of Dixon, Illinois, and in the 25 or 26 years she worked there, she embezzled $53,000,000 (that's FIFTY THREE MILLION DOLLARS). She only got caught when she went on vacation, and they brought in a temp bookkeeper, who noticed the discrepancy right away. She went to the boss, who went to the FBI. They played it cool, and watched her for another year before busting her. She had spent all the money on ranches and horses, so it was mostly gone. The city sued the auditing firm that had been going over Rita's books for failing to notice the obvious improprieties, and won (it was rumored that Rita was...servicing...the auditor). She's still in the clink, sentenced to 20 years. Edit: the Feds LOVE embezzlement cases, because there's often tax evasion along with it. After all, how do you report stolen loot on your income tax?
@Harry-zz2oh3 жыл бұрын
Every tax form (1040) has a blank line for reporting 'other income", the instructions are very clear as to what this includes so ill gotten gains are also to be reported. Back in the 1930's a gangster named Al Capone, who was the head of a Chicago mob, ended up going to prison for income tax evasion. All the evidence for his other crimes were buried with any witnesses.

My parents bought their house from a lady who was a few years after charged and convicted for embezzlement and it was from a government agency. She did fed time. Apparently she had used the money to buy a bunch of properties. When she suspected she was being investigated she sold almost everything and hid the money from that. That became her retirement money because she was old. Her son went to prison multiple times for felonies and hit that third strike law when he was caught breaking into a contractors truck and stealing tools. Her grandsons wound up following dad to prison. A family crime ring it would seem.

OP should go to the nearest bar and order a $7.00 shot of whatever and just sip it knowing if they would have not been as greedy they wouldn't have lost so much because of so little. From story 2: Do you think he was going to stop, but then with the new girl he didn't really want to share it with her and to keep her quiet he promised her a million dollars also? The love of money is the root of all evil.

Dude the last story was hella satisfying and I applauded in respect and amazed to OP's mom for being a badass accountant on that day. And moral of the story?: Don't screw the accountant or you'll get yourself in the Karma in very, VERY bad way XD

Imagine having what must be a well paying job as head of finance and you go about embezzling what amounts to an extra 15 dollars an hour, that really isn’t that much when you likely make 150k+ lol

And that last story, is why I'm aiming for accountant. Not only could I severely screw some dead weights life over if there is embezzlement happening, but accountants who do there job like this actually get a raise... you get money for counting money and you get extra money when the math is off xD

It always baffles me how people on the top who depend on their workers fail miserably when it comes to treating them with dignity and respect. If you depend on people, it's important to make them want to stick around.

That last story was very interesting... I know of a case currently still going on of just such a crime and I’ll be interested to see how it plays out. What gets me is that crimes like this get less penalty that violent offenses, and while I understand that violence is horrible and should be punished, sometimes these white collar crimes can ruin lives (besides those who deserve it like the guy in this story). A scammer stealing life savings, for example. These people do more damage than you usually hear about. So I’m glad this one gets serious time.

I did some math here on this embezzlement story. This dude was making about $732.60 a week. $1465.20 per month And $17,582.40 a year. All this on top of what the company payed him.

🤣 that first story brought back memories from my days in a college town in Northern California. I got this data review job through a temp agency, but they paid minimum wage, then $7 an hour, and had ridiculously high standards of 8K KPH. The first week went OK, but then they started mandating 12 hours of OT a week, then 16 hours the following week. Then 6 hours for Saturday. I managed to survive a 16 hour OT work week, but when I saw my paycheck it was less than $300. People were angry, and productivity fell hard. I frequently fell asleep at my computer during document loading lag. The heads of the company finally had it out with the staff demanding better performance, more OT, shorter breaks, and no staff conversations. What was their incentive? NOTHING. We asked for guaranteed time off: NOPE. We ask for more pay: NOPE. They claimed they were over budget anyway. I snapped and said: why don't we rename the company EDS&M (a play on the company name). I'm sure we can find a 60 year old German woman to wear black leather, crack the whips on our backs, and it would be a perk for everyone. I was let go shortly after that.
