r/AmITheA**hole OP is an Asian man married to a woman who has an extremely toxic family. OP's father-in-law and sister-in-law basically hate him just because he's Asian. Coincidentally, both OP and his sister-in-law are professional chefs, and the sister-in-law mocks OP's cooking every chance she gets. Eventually, one of their conflicts goes public and gets posted on social media, leading to the sister-in-law getting fired and all of her friends calling her out on her r*cist behavior.

"your mom didn't do much in this story", that's just it. Her mom didn't do anything. She didn't stop stepdad from throwing away bio dad's stuff, she didn't stop step sister from locking op out of her own room, and she didn't stick up for her own child.

@TiffWaffles
@TiffWaffles 3 жыл бұрын
What gets me is how can any person get jealous and feel insecure of a dead spouse? If I was in a relationship with a man that lost his spouse or partner and they had children together, I wouldn't ever want the child to feel that I am replacing or destroying the memory of their mother. I wouldn't demand that belongings get thrown out or that pictures be boxed up and hidden away. I'd want the child to have those pictures of their mother and any belongings that they feel are a piece of their mother. Whether it's a necklace or a book... Or figurines... Anything really. Why did the mother not nip stepdad's behaviour in the butt and call him out for it?
@theresagailgiordano
@theresagailgiordano 3 жыл бұрын
@@TiffWaffles there was a reddit AITA a while ago about a groom-to-be who wanted to know if he was in the wrong for wanting to call off the wedding cause his fiance wanted to massively tribute their wedding to her late boyfriend, like a dedication video and other stuff too. In THAT cause, I totally get it. But to alienate a child from their dead parent? Nah man. Something's wrong there. The stepdad is messed in the head for the mindset, but I'd say the mom is worse for going along with it. Also I don't wanna be an armchair psychologist but it sounds like classic scapegoat/golden child where OP isn't wanted just because she's from a prior relationship. Baffles me that the mom is all for it too.

Why is it racist to say Kung Pao Chicken? I didn't know what that was at first and actually thought it was a racial slur, but when I googled it i saw its a legit dish that tastes really good. So I'm a bit confused about where the racism is. Maybe I'm missing something, but it just seems like the snobbery of someone who thinks French food is better than foods from other countries. You do have some sort of hierarchy in the food world with French food seen as being at the top. That's snobbery, not racism.

A woman who can love 2 people at once can love more than just those 2. The fact that you were filling the role of father, while a dead man was getting the respect for it, basically says to me, you were her resource and not seen as a significant other. The fact you say "dated" tells me at some point one of you had this similar realization. It's not the jealousy. It's the knowledge of what's actually going on.

I think they still don't deserve the rating they got. They apparently punished the StepSister severely for her actions and offered to increase her punishment further to keep the peace. Yes throwing out her dead parents items was extreme and a pathetic action. Adding a lock on the door is also cruel since they share the room. That's not fair. They're still bad parents and OP should definitely stick with her uncle. I just want people to be mad at them for the right reasons.

I know!! He'll be so attentive and ask questions as he sees grandpa, mom, or whoever cook a traditional dish (kitchen, outdoor fire pit, whatever) and when he tries the food you can notice him analyzing how the preparation had effects on the food. Yeah. Why would OP want to remain caught between her step-siblings feud (both are extremely fast towards aggression), being bullied in her own home (seriously a lock on her own room? The step-brother used a human shield to get away with what he an done), an A-Hole for a step-father and mother who is content to OP be used as a punching bag everytime the step-family throw a tantrum. If I could, I would shout at the "Big clue you're in the wrong lady, you got shunned by your family and and they only call you to tell you to stay away because of what you did, or rather didn't do, you're bloody job as a mother."

Or she at least should have known to keep it to herself. Realistically, in America people have the right to be racist if that's what they believe. What they don't have the right to do is escape from the social consequences of having those beliefs, when other people in their community find out about it. Sarah has every right to be a racist. And everyone she knows has every right to tell her that she's a piece of shit for it. Also isn’t it dangerous to introduce animals not native to certain environments? I seem to recall that it can have dangerous repercussions on the current eco systems. There are many historical events of this happening and I believe there are two famous cases, one took place in the UK, where a town overrun by rats introduced cats to get rid of them and now they have a cat problem. And another famous case for Hawai’i but I can’t remember the animal that was brought there to take care of a “vermin”, I just know that the ripple effect was that the animal started preying on other small creatures.

An important thing to remember whenever someone tries to defend their racist joke by pointing out "it's a joke": Racist jokes are, by their very definition, racist. That they are also jokes does not change this.
@LittleParody
@LittleParody 3 жыл бұрын
And here's the other thing that people like that need to remember: Just because it's a joke to you, doesn't mean that everyone else isn't allowed to be hurt or offended by it. And no, the people who get offended/hurt aren't just 'special snowflakes' or simply 'can't take a joke'. It's ironic how those people make such cruel jokes all willy nilly, but then they can't handle someone getting pissed over it because it's cruel. Like, if you're gonna be a jerk, can you at least NOT start acting like an entitled baby when backlash occurs?
@anonymouscommentor411
@anonymouscommentor411 3 жыл бұрын
Idk, context matters too tbh. Like, you don't say things knowing it'll hurt someone. People often make fun of racist stereotypes for example, but sometimes people take it out of the context it was in. In this case it wasn't actually a joke though and that was just a mask for what was just an insult. Anyways, context matters. Like, I am bi and I make jokes about it and my friends join in and in that context it's fine because nobody is getting hurt and we are just having a good time and we all still love each other at the end of the day.

The most screwed-up ethnic jokes I've heard weren't from other white people; they were mostly between black and hispanic people, telling them to each other about each other and laughing themselves to tears while they did it. They would never tell me any white people jokes, though. It sucked, lol, because I wanted to hear some. Edit: To clarify, my family is massively multi-ethnic (Black, Asian, Hispanic and Native and of course, White), so I've never grown up thinking "I have [insert ethnicity] family members," and racial tension isn't a thing in my family.

I feel a bit angry at the wife in the last story. She wasn’t fully on OP’s side until the SIL yelled at her over the phone. Until then, she kept begging for OP to apologize so the fighting stops. No. I’m glad OP didn’t apologize, you don’t apologize to people who are blatantly racist and refuse to acknowledge they’re in the wrong. Otherwise, you’ll just be enabling them to do it more. So, I am a bit angry and disappointed at the wife for deciding to fully side with OP just ‘cause she got verbal abuse from her SIL instead of doing so from the get go because of what SIL said the first time.

I’m not saying OP’s wife is racist or doesn’t understand racism because she isn’t a POC, but it just seems really insensitive to prefer keeping the peace/trying to control the situation in her own way until the same racist person yelled at her rather than defending her husband from the start. And I’m pretty sure most of this is because she’s Caucasian. It doesn’t mean she’s a bad person or anything, it just means she’s probably unknowingly insensitive. The goldfish story is so upsetting on so many levels. First, releasing a freshwater fish into saltwater will guarantee that fish a slow, excruciating death. Second, if she had released the goldfish into freshwater, it has the chance to become invasive and disrupt native wildlife; released goldfish can cause a lot of damage. Third, buying fish from pet stores to "save" them just encourages them to overbreed and maltreat MORE fish. Absolutely gross to do something like that for clout.
