'Tibbie' Brittain was my RSM at Mons barracks, Aldershot in 1952, on a guard duty over Christmas he put his knee in the middle of my back to pull the creases out of my overcoat and said "Don't worry, I'm not trying to get up you".

This was 1954. The film says he has 37 years’ service. This puts him at enlisting around 1917, in the First World War. He would also have seen some action during colonial garrisoning between the wars, in places like India and Kenya. Must have been quite some career with a lot of stories. Sure he’s carrying a few extra pounds from the cheap beer in the Sergeants’ Mess but I think we can excuse him that.

it was a privilege to serve under the old style RSM's who called a spade, a spade and called us all much worse and unrepeatable when on the drill square. That takes nothing away from the new generation of RSM's who have a slightly more refined manner about them, but also added responsibilities and pressure in the modern military. Respect to them all, past, present and future !

My first RSM when I joined the army in 1962 was a guy by the name of David Gadsen, Royal Artillery. He came from the same mould as Mr Brittain, loud voice, magnificent bearing and the epitome of an RSM. I believe he retired as a Major.lk

Becoming a Rupert would be a step down. As RSM he is top of the non-com tree, as a 2nd Lt he is now bottom. He could get a gig with a 10 Sergeant as his ' advisor '

@@laurenceoconnor6499 You maybe entitled to your opinion, but don’t call a Man who attained the highest rank of an NCO a Slob. You really have no idea what it entails to be a RSM Warrant Officer Class I and the esteem, respect and prestige it brings. These men are the backbone of their Regiments who are the go between the Commanding Officer and the serving Soldiers. You’re definitely not of a Military Mind, bearing or I doubt have ever served in any shape or form, if you have then you should be ashamed of yourself for such an obnoxious misinformed comment. He made a (bigger) fool of himself by 'appearing' in the 1950s t.v. comedy show "Alfred Marks Time", bawling out the title "Alfred...Marks...TIME!! It seems that he got on with Marks, a largely-forgotten comedian who once guest-starred in a "Sweeney" episode (as a comic gangster). Maybe Brittain needed the money and Marks (who had something of a military bearing) did him a favour (sort of).

0:08 What is with the military and top sergeants who scream orders that make no sense? Seriously, I hardly can ever decipher what these maniacs are shouting about. Seems like he's saying "Hugaaaaaaaaaaaaaaast... HALT!" Some sort of military code or do these screaming sadists shout gibberish in order to further terrify their troops who also have no idea what the sergeants are saying?
