Albon you can’t change the fact none of the new “Supra” is from Toyota with respect to its base & foundation. So Toyota put their spin on some things. Big deal. The entire heart & sole is from Germany. Toyota basically asked BMW to copy their homework. And BMW said “just change it enough to make it look like your own”. I don’t see anything wrong with the car itself, but to look at the history of the Supra, then call this new one a “Supra” is ridiculous in my opinion.

@damianw226 Sorry I cant agree with you there. I'm a die hard toyota fan and this is a great venture. I've owned MR2s, (motors built by Yamaha but nobody bitches) and I own a BMW 335XI. Since I've owned my 335 i've shelled out maybe 2-3k and I am making 450-500 whp reliably including the maintenance. People have one experience and they lose their minds. All engines have issues big and small. both the B58 and the 2JZ have their inherent problems. People shy away from doing anything BMW because like everything German its extremely over-engineered. You cant just drop a BMW motor and do a standalone. Even your beloved VW, Audi - plagued with check engine lights and issue with premature mechanical wear. Dont believe me? Look up a Volkswagen 4 digit code on any model and year. CXCB, CXCA they are constantly making revisions to their engines every other year. Again this is normal in the industry - nothing man made is bulletproof. Once you swallow that pill you can honestly start enjoying the modding process. Miles ahead is not a fact about it being ahead in any category - thats an opinion. I am in the Service Industry and this video made me laugh so hard. For starters fact check the video, it has one auxiliary water pump for the intake manifold water to air intercooler and a mechanical for the motor. Drop the motor to work on it because the belts are in the rear? Are you serious? This guy must be a "KZbin Certified Tech"... The question alone about the B58 being better than the 2JZ is null and void because its a revised motor not on any other car yet... Time will tell and once the aftermarket community catches up with this car (and they will) You'll see skinnies on the back of these running 9s in the 1/4 mile.

Honestly speaking, I say the 2JZ-GTE is better. But, that's more of a personal connection to the sound of it, and I actually like the 1JZ more than the 2JZ for that reason. The sounds, the emotion, all of it. You just can't get that as much in a non-japanese engine. But, I LOVE BMW. They're great as a company, although I'm glad they did a joint venture with Toyota for enhanced reliability on this thing. Not to mention, the official Toyota instagram said they'll have a second, four-cylinder model that's actually easy to do 2JZ swaps for, as intended from the factory. So long story short: It's a fine engine, I prefer the 2J out of my weebiness and reason for liking cars, but I respect the new supra. P.S. BMW Supra jokes were never funny, nor clever. They're really annoying, and if you want to see a supra that looks like a BMW, compare the A70 to the 850CSi

probably the best video on the supra's b58 engine. I'm with you, i suport the new supra. Another key thing, despite having an Inline 6, the center of gravity is lower than a subaru brz which is already very low. Chassis more rigid than Lfa and the new differential is pretty smart. with all that, this new supra should be eating corners.

The B58 is a brilliant Engine to modify Here in Germany the Tuners love them Only with a Tune (not Hardware change at all) the Car will have around 400-420HP. With a Downpipe of course more. And now think of the Development from all the Hybrid Turbo Companys. 600hp and more only with a few good on parts is very EASY I say for around 4000$ you can double the Power on the B58 How much you have to spend to double the Power on the 2jz? New Turbo, new Header, new Exhaust and Downpipe, new Intercooler , new injectors ,new Gas Pump, new ECU and many more things. With around 4k$ this is not possible to build a 600HP 2JZ with good parts (No Chinese junk parts that Brake more then they Work) Dont get me wrong i Love the 2J (because a old BMW M GmbH Ingenieur was involved in the Design of the 2J short block) , but the B58 is way better to make double the stock Power. And who needs more than 600HP for a daily Driver? Greetings from Germany 🇩🇪

I have a 2017 BMW M240i which has the B58 motor in it. It's a great motor, and I have a lot of fun (maybe too much fun) with my car. The car is still under warranty; so I don't want to make any mods to it.......yet. However, for everyday driving; you don't need to. The car has plenty of get up and go. It's quick and nimble and has a great sound. ALSO, something you didn't talk about is gas mileage. I believe the "real" Supra got something like 21 mpg. I took a road trip up the west coast with the car and was getting 35mpg. You get all that performance with great gas mileage (provided you aren't "racing" around town, then no engine can help you there). So, what people will be seeing is a car (Z4 and Supra) they can have a lot of fun driving everyday, gets good gas mileage, and has plenty of performance when you need it (aka - passing retarded drivers). AND has a little more power at its disposal to be able to do things like autocross and HPD. Personally, can't wait for Grand Tour (or some one else) do a side by side comparison. Probably won't see much of a difference, but will be cool to see. Also, will be interesting to see what modifications start to pop up for this engine. Not to drive anyone away from this channel, but "Engineering Explained" goes into some good details about how the motor works (and compares it a bit to the N55). Definitely worth checking out.

The B58 engine is going to be great! I tuned my own 2JZ and it was a fairly simple process working between spark and fuel tables. But adding twin variable cams would be really interesting when managing air/load going into the engine. This is why big cams in a 2JZ only shift the power band; but if you could increase/decrease cam duration overlap between high/low loads, there would be significant gains in area under the torque curve.

VVTi on the 2jz makes up a lot of that difference on bigger cams. Biggest issue I see with the B58 is that it's very undersquare. Borderline diesel bore/stroke ratio. Revving that thing out like a 2jz isn't going to be a possibility which *really* limits the use of bigger turbos.

@Brad Viviviyal Why 7500? I can't think of any turbo for the 2jz that can flow 1300hp and runs out of breath above 7500. I can't think of any aftermarket rods and pistons that wouldn't be happy above 7500. I can't think of any aftermarket valves, springs, retainers, and cams that wouldn't be happy above 7500. I know all of that isn't stock for 1300hp. So, why limit yourself to 7500 when the big power guys are pushing well above that? Hell, the small power guys, myself, are revving out to 8250 all day long without a single problem on stock bottom end, cams, springs/valves/retainers. I'm not trying to be a dick but that's completely inconsistent with almost every other 2jz pushing that kind of power, not to mention how rare 1300hp builds are despite what youtube leads people to believe. Great video man, gave me a good insight into the B58, honestly it makes sense for Toyota to go with a sourced motor, they legit dont have another car to utilize a inhouse developed motor for. At the time of the development of the 1JZ/2JZ motors they were being utilized in more then just supras, they came in like 5 other car models i.e cressida, soarer, chaser, and such, and now with most of the RWD cars being lexus branded and V6, toyota deciding to stick with a I6 platform means they dont have anything they can put in the car and the Toyota bean counters damn well arent gonna drop money into R&D for a motor they couldnt use in any other cars. Its because toyota decided when they were bringing this car back it had to be I6 that they went to BMW for the collab. Yes the purist supra owner fanboy is upset but i also understand that was the right move, BMW has been developing performance Inline 6's while other JDM companies are out of the game and have switched to V6s. If you had to choose between BMW I6 or Toyota V6 which would you go with? Personally i wouldnt touch any V6s for a performance cars, they sound like crap to me, and the GTR is the only one thats halfway decent sound wise and it outperforms alot, but at a hefty cost.

No mater if Toyota redoes everything on the car. Josh Lum Okay, I need to learn/research more about these new head designs then... Clearly, I don’t know enough. My worry was, as you increase cylinder pressure (boost), you’d want the exhaust ports in the head to be larger in cross-sectional area. But from the factory, they would have spec’d the port sizes relative to OEM Hp/Tq; therefore, when increased for say, triple the cylinder pressure, flow is disturbed due to ports being too small...?? However, there is a pressure/velocity/area equation for a “Nozzle/Diffuser” effect. Basically, pressure and velocity become inverted/proportional with a change in cross-sectional area. So, as a cross-sectional area decreases, velocity increases and pressure decreases. As the cross-sectional area increases, the pressure increases and the velocity decreases. So I guess the question is, are the sum of all cross-sectional areas of each exhaust valve less than, equal to or greater than the sum of the two cross-sectional areas of the exhaust ports coming out of the cylinder head?? Then you could partially have a vague understanding of pressure/velocity behaviors of the exhaust gases as it flows from the cylinder to the exhaust ports and to the turbocharger....?? That’s how I’m thinking....but there’s probably way more factors/variables involved through...

Thanks for the very informative video, decently explained a lot of things to someone who loves cars, but really has no proper knowledge or understanding about the works, differences and intricacies of these different engines. It's also fun and sad to see how the fans and haters clash in the comments. Of course the Mk.IV Supra is an institution as is the 2JZ engine and they have rightfully earned their status in the upper echelons of performance and tuner cars. And after 25 years the iconic name gets a resurrection. After learning about the BMW collaboration part I too am a bit bummed out, because this could've been the perfect chance for Toyota to bring something new and iconic to the market, instead of only the fresh looks and name. For a company that has made it's name and still being a major player in the industry a "3JZ" engine development shouldn't have been too much of a hassle and probably would've ended up awesome too. But as we live in the modern day where manufacturing efficiency and profit maximization are key to surviving, so making a whole new engine and own platform makes little to no sense for such a low volume product and a "niche" market. There might be an oversight on the Toyota side, but only time will tell. Of course the 2JZ is iconic for it's insane power capability but time will show how the B58 will come to be tuned and at what cost. People are always fast to complain and put things down, just because it's something new or not what they wanted. And quite honestly, who truly needs 1000 horsepower? Even 600 is still a-fucking-lot for any car for that matter. So many fanboys complaining everywhere about the BMW engine and how 2JZ is superior and all that crap, when even half of those people wont probably even own either and even then, probably would never even take those insane powers out of the engine that it could. Just fucking be happy for the fact that there's a new Supra, it looks recognizably like a Supra and after that, it can be whatever. 2JZ swap it if you want or stuff a big american V8 in it for all I care. The car will be anything the people make of it, whether it only uses the chassis for the looks or the whole package. It's the Supra of our time whether a collab or not. How about you make it your own and enjoy it?

It looks nothing like a new supra. It looks like a new Z4, inside and out. This was not a good decision, it was a money decision that will probably fail. Look how well the 86/BRZ/FRS did.

Some part of me believes that Toyota and BMW clearly are banking that people will modify/tune their B58 engines for way more power....rather than give them “OEM” calibrated high torque/horsepower. Hence, the low Tq/Hp from the factory....their obviously saying to the market “tune/modify” me (engine); don’t leave me stock (too low).

I kind of doubt that, unless they're hoping people will void warranties and have to buy new ones. Toyota got the short end of the stick, the new Z4 will have the regular tuned B58 which will be 385hp instead of the Supra's detuned 335hp. BMW didn't want Toyota to sell the same car at a lower price unless it was less powerful.

The spray in liners help with heat and weight, the timing chain is at the rear to limit crank twist common on inline 6's, the main water pump is mechanical, with an electric valvebody/pump for cooldown/warm up, its direct injection as well, if it's TRUE twin scroll it will sound just like any other inline 6, shim under bucket is best saved for rpm higher than production cars use, and roller rockers give more lift for cam height WITH hydraulic lash, and have been around for ever, and dual vanos means a broader powerband, tho vanos itself hasn't proven to be too reliable, and being only direct injection with dual vanos, the intake valves will eventually gum up, and valvetronic (variable valve lift)which is exclusive to bmw and nissan who has a similar system. In my opinion it's going to be a great car, bmw engines are super easy to tune. A Bmw inline engine can gain a 100hp without changing anything but the tune, it's the way german cars work, they give a product that works for the normal people that represent a big number of drivers, but they also give you the necessary built to create a racing car from the factory. They build it to help you make it fast without having to spend alot of money. That way the people looking for more power won't affect the car sales by having to release a car that only a few will want to buy. Keep in mind that there's a lot of restriction about building cars in now, your car need to be safe and eco friendly. So for having more power than the 2jz that didn't have as much restrictions is already a good thing.

You forgot to mention the b58 intercooler is liquid cooled. I doubt anyone would be able to swap out cams considering how valvetronic works on bmws. The b58 Dme uses micro pins. Which means it has a limit of how many times it can be unplugged before you have to replace it (5). Not a lot you can do to it beside a tune and maybe bigger turbo?. It will most likely be paired with a ZF transmission, all newer auto bmws use this transmission, it shifts really quick and rev matches on down shifts. It’ll be interesting to see what ppl will do with it
