Just so you know, I think the ionity chargers have two formats for different battery types. If your battery is on a 400V architecture, the maximum it can deliver is 150kw. It's limited to like 350amps as far as I remember. Therefore ANY car (every Tesla uses 400v batteries) with a 400v architecture, the maximum speed an ionity charger can give is 150kw ie: 400v X 350 amps= 140kw. Why? This is because the amperage is limited to ~350amps. The cables can't take anymore. The reason Tesla V3 superchargers can take more amps is because those are specially designed cables with liquid cooling so that the cables don't overheat and melt. If you want Tesla's 250kw V3 chargers, they are the fastest way to charge a Tesla because they can deliver more amps. 400v X 600 amps = 240kw The only time those ionity chargers can deliver 350kw is when the car has a 800v architecture. Think Porsche Taycan. Because 800v X 400amps = 320kw. HOWEVER, here's the caveat, Porsche suddenly dropped the 350kw from their marketing when they realised they couldn't provide it. It was maxed out at 270kw which is funnily enough 800v X 350 amps= 280kw. Note: the amperage again capping out 350amps because the cables can't take more irrespective of 400v or 800v architecture Note 2: volts X amps = power. That formula explains It all.

It really shows how much of a bargain the Model 3 actually is, you get dual motors, great accelleration, you get long range and quick charging. One thing to remember is that the Model 3 both charges quickly, as well as it goes far. And it does so with a smaller battery than most of its competitors in the same range bracket and that also means its cheaper to charge. On top of that, you get the supercharger network, where it charges even quicker than in this test. And also with the supercharger network, you can just drive entire europe without knowing the languages and different charging networks everywhere, so I drove from Norway to Denmark and Germany, no issues whatsover, you just plug the car in a supercharger and its ready :-) (the trip was before Korona should be noted!).

So obviously you have to charge big etron to 95% to cover distance that Model 3 covers on 65%. Only thing that really matters is distance charged per time in my opinion.

After watching this, the e-tron is edging to the top of my likely-to-buy list. Really impressed with the charging speed. I’m mostly doing a short work commute (only 16 miles), but often drive London to Oxford, as well as up to Scotland a couple of times a year. Looks like it’d be very comfortable with a couple of stops. I know how the Teslas look on paper, but I really can’t get along with the bodywork. Wish you’d had a Polestar 2 in the convoy! Anyway, excellent video. Seriously useful.

I’ve just test drove an e-tron. While I agree with everything you’ve said, the price of them in Australia is just insane. Even the cheapest e-tron would cost close to double of a M3LR. It’s a nicer car inside and comfort wise, but the interior isn’t any bigger to my surprise and calibration of regen and braking still got some way to go.
@RSEV3 жыл бұрын
I need to borrow a polestar 2 for my review on that. It suits some but it’s efficiency and charge speed are both woeful I’m afraid. No where near competitive with Tesla on those fronts....! (I was in the car wow 100-0% test and drove the polestar until it died...)
@RomeoJulietCharlie3 жыл бұрын
@@RSEV haven’t yet watched an awful lot of reviews, but it looks like the Polestar 2 does a lot of throttling while it’s charging. I was quietly keeping my fingers crossed for a magical software update allowing it more e-tron like charging. It does look like a nice environment to be in for hours at a time. Then again, so does the Audi. There’s a nagging feeling of inevitability that I’m going to end up with a M3LR, despite it being as aesthetically appealing as a melted frisbee.
@RomeoJulietCharlie3 жыл бұрын
@@alanngli I hear ya. Also not cheap here in the UK. One saving grace is that my company is starting up a salary sacrifice scheme, so could lease pre-tax (which in real terms means about 40% off the standard lease price, if you’re on the higher income tax bracket). Haven’t seen any of the numbers or what’s available yet, though, but could be a much cheaper alternative to actually buying the thing.

@@RomeoJulietCharlie I have a friend with a PS2 and it is a lovely car, if you are not doing too many long trips I would take it over the etron. With an M3 it's more of a lottery with build quality, however I have always found Audi's will give you issues throughout their life (not that some Audi owners will admit that). I currently own a 2021 M3LR and I couldn't be happier with it, however I could be swayed by a Polestar in the future, if they start using a dedicated BEV platform.

Great test and very fair. I really liked the test that charged to enough to get back. The reality is that I and most people would charge back up to 90% and have some lunch or a coffee etc, so the Audi for me would work better as a long range car due its faster charging speed and lack of tapering. Of course the Audi and Porsche for that matter, use the same architecture and have a buffer in the battery to prevent degradation at fast charging speeds. Cannot wait for more Gridserve centres to open up this year.

Great video! Will be curious to see over time how well the E-Tron battery hold up charging so fast for so long. Will degradation happen quicker with the battery?
@josefv-y8m3 жыл бұрын
Since there is a buffer of 13kwh above usable Netto...perhaps you will see a degradation after 8 years if this buffer was used to hide the degradation.

The e-tron can do it because the Audi engineers built a better Thermal Management system for the battery bank. Lithium batteries can theoretically take huge charge input but you’ve got to keep them cool (between 25-35deg C), or they will be damaged. Tesla throttles the charge rate because it can’t manage it as well.

Previously owned a Model X, and currently own a Model 3 and Model Y. At SC stations, I've never seen such low kW at those SOCs. Just odd to me that it would be so much less at these stations.

Very interesting. With all the necessary caveats (eg no one charges a Model 3 up to 90% at a supercharger, etc) 🙂
@josefv-y8m3 жыл бұрын
Yes, since the Tesla has a very bad charging curve and drops heavily at 60% and you have to know this...compared to eTron...you do not have too think about since nearly the same from 10 to 80 at 150kw.
@scottmcinnes45163 жыл бұрын
I wouldn’t say “bad” charging curve - still charges very fast. Also (1) there’s got to a reason why Tesla devised the curve that way (probably to preserve the battery for longer? In particular given the wise supercharge network?) and (2) Model 3 still gets you from A to B quicker than the very-very thirsty e-Tron

Hugely counter-intuitive claims with Tesla having built EVs for much longer than Audi and therefore much more experience with batteries, more data, a lot of people saying that they are far ahead than the competition in battery management, etc. Any evidence to backup those counter-intuitive claims? Thanks

@@scottmcinnes4516 Audi have been building automobiles for 10 times longer than Tesla, and at the end of the day that is what your buying isn’t it? I’m comforted that there is an eight year warranty on the battery in the e-tron.

will be interesting to see what happens when VW increases the max charging speed from 125kW to 170kW later in the year. depending on the tapering of that higher top speed it might be beating the model 3 at least to the 90% mark (in this setup). the rest is just sacrificed for a lot more cargo room and a significantly more comfortable suspension which requires more travel of the springs and dampers which leads to a higher bonnet and then worse aerodynamics ...

The new Q8 Etron with it's longer range and basically same charging speed makes road trips very simple. Where most of them would need 3-4 stops the Etron can do it in 2 stops and you just deep charge it to 80%

It looks that eTron is the only brand, which uses so aggressive charging strategy. So, what is the impact on battery degradation, because generally batteries are similar in modern cars (same manufacturers usually, similar technologies)?
@supaahflyy3 жыл бұрын
I think they just don't allow the usage of the entire battery. 100% is probably in actuality like 85-90% of the battery. That's why it's giving you the impression that it's charging fast

The 10% buffer you decided to add doesn't do the efficient cars any justice. You should have calculated the buffer in miles to be as fair as possible. The model 3 could do like 50% more miles with 10% battery than one of the less efficient cars.
