For their final high-speed archaeological adventure of the series. Time Team find themselves inside a partially abandoned army barracks in Nethcravon in Wiltshire. It's not military memorabilia they're after but something much older and more interesting.
In 1907, a Colonel Hawley discovered part of a tessellated pavement - or mosaic - in the grounds which he believed was part of a Roman villa, built around AD 300.
Now for the first time the army have allowed archaeologists inside the barbed wire to check out the colonel's theory. They have only a few short months before the troops return and the site is once again off-limits to civilians. Tony Robinson, Mick Aston and the Time Team however, have just three short days!

Isn't it amazing how Victor Ambrose could start drawing a rendition of the type of villa expected to be found during the excavation - even before one hole was even dug ! Not only his extraordinary artistic talent must be highly praised but also his deep knowledge of historical architecture through the ages. He is literally an all round talent and his final reconstructions of the sites are a wonder to see ! 😘

I think it's refreshing they air episodes no matter the end result. By refreshing, I mean it's good to see humility in broadcast programming, rather than attempting to outdo what has already been done. Twenty years is a good run for any program, good for them. Maybe it'll be resurrected and refurbished in another twenty.

It wasn't just 'refreshing'. Their goal was to present true archaeology. To do that, they had to be completely honest. Sometimes they found a mother-lode of artifacts; sometimes they found the proof they needed literally at the last minute. Several times, they had nothing to show for their efforts, and they made no bones about saying so. One of the most intriguing and (in a way) heartbreaking episodes was the dig done at Llygadwy in Wales. So many great finds,, but they were all out of context, so they were worthless.

+Sleeper Awake I'm not sure this small grouping here (Marie, Annette) understand that most of these folks are experienced professionals in their own right. How they work together at all is a miracle. I have noticed that females on the show are often a bit marginalized and Carenza may show her frustration at times. See if you notice the changes in how sex is portrayed in later episodes before Mick quit the show (rest his soul).

+MrTeneric I'm not debating that doing that many shows together and still being civil to each other is indeed a miracle. :) What I love about the show is that they leave those human parts in . . .folks get frustrated, there are times of short tempers. And of course they are all professionals at the top of their field. It's just that sometimes certain people aren't my cup of tea. And sometimes we comment . . . and sometimes those comments might be best left in our heads instead of publicly stated. Thank you for your support and reply. Not everyone would take the time to write such a thoughtful and diplomatic comment.

I know it's a few episodes back the the Mosaic Tiles the mentioned reminded me. Someone had asked what Time Team would have been in Latin for their little mosaic they had done for the Lost Villa in the field. Well I did a little Digging (Pun intended) and it's most appropriate to use a synonym for Team. In this Case Collaboration is the most appropriate so if they were to Write "Time Team" In Latin it would have Read "Tempus Collaborare" Though I don't Doubt Robin figured that out ages ago. Heck these early episodes were aired most likely before I was even born, or just after since I'm a 1994 baby

Was great to see Mick in a motorized wheelchair zipping here and there all over the place, making him feel more involved in things and than sitting in the truck, so out of the way form the happenings. First time ever that I have seen with his long hair actually tied back. Shame that, once again, as usual, on day three they finally find more of what they have been chasing for the last two days and then have to stop it all and move on. Would of been great to at some point come back to this and knowing now where this roman villa is, to dig up the rest of it.

Its fascinating to learn that the Romans might have invented central heating, unless they found a previous civilization that used it, but it's still fascinating to learn that our central heating tech of today is over 2000 years old.

I agree that the integrity of the series is really shown off with an episode like this. They didn't keep going past the three days in order to have more to show. Actually this whole season was fairly disappointing in terms of "results" (only two of the six episodes had them finding what they set out to find) and it's a little surprising that viewership wasn't affected by that.

@Philrc
@Philrc 8 жыл бұрын
That wasn't why they had three days. It was a deliberate decision. There is an episode in which Mick explains it, and how you *can* do investigative archaeology in three days ( I've just seen it but i can't remember which one it is!) . Their aim was never to dig everything up. It was to get in there, investigate, map out the site and see what was there. All that information of course is carefully recorded and there for any future digs to refer to. So this was the remit of the programme: 3 days. That's how you make an interesting TV series; otherwise you'd have a programme that spent weeks and weeks on the same dig: it wouldn't work.
@Wally-H
@Wally-H 6 жыл бұрын
It was also probably down to budgets and the need to schedule the manufacture of TV programmes. Time Team was a very expensive programme to make - the wage bill alone must have been eye-watering - and you'd double that quite quickly by making it a week e.g. TV advertising revenue, plus money from selling the show to overseas networks and merchandising (books accompanying the series etc.), had to pay for everything and leave a profit after - business is business.

Poor Stewart, Carenza has been cutting him off in mid-sentence since Episode 4. he had the patience of a saint. Rather ironic, with him being right ninety percent of the time.

I have been watching awhile. Tony's hair goes from black shoulder length to gray not much there. Phil's hair goes gray and Mick's just lessens. Carennza's stays the same and she looked the same.

I didn't like it at first, but I realize it made the series and its long run with so many episodes possible. I like the idea that they generated so many projects for other, local archaeologists to pursue further. In terms of the show, the tight timeframe adds drama at times (including the risk of finding naught) and focuses their attention on a key question or two, but now and then they are stymied. Not as much as I would have thought, though!

There is a flip side to that though. The MOD own very substantial amounts of real estate in the UK (training grounds etc.) and much of it actually preserves ancient scrubland and woodlands that have remained untouched for centuries. Many of those sites have become areas of great importance in terms of the plants and wildlife that flourish within them.

Fast forward to the last season of TT and it's only Phil and Tony left of the guys in this episode, all the men were axed by the girl power movement, or, in Mick's case, fed up and quit. Too bad, the girls ran the show into the trash can and it cancelled.
