Sometimes I get frustrated watching these videos because some things that Gavin says really makes sense and has a thought process behind them but they just turn it into a way to make fun of him. I mean sure sometimes it's just straight up funny but sometimes he actually says things that's really interesting to discuss.

I'm sure most of us understand what he's saying. When he said there's more senses than the normal 6 that you usually think about. I remember it being around 19 or more and can tell Gavin is the type of person that gets really interested in strange and uncommon facts. First they go and try to put him on the spot as wrong saying there's more than 6 then they flip it into being about how he doesn't know which ones the sense are.. I mean it's all fun and I can laugh at it but sometimes it gets a bit frustrating because it seems no one can take the smart or facts he says serious because they are so used to him saying strange or stupid things. His mind is pretty fascinating.

When Gavin started talking about humans having more than five senses, he was actually correct. Most humans have on average between 22 and 24 senses. The two he mentioned, temperature and "knowing where you are in relation to your nose" are real senses. The latter is called your kinesthetic sense. It deals with knowing where your body parts are in relation to your center of mass without having to see them or even feel them. It would be what gives us what we call "muscle memory," and allows us to accurately move our body and respond to external stimuli BEFORE our brain is able to translate the information it's receiving into a form that we can use to make premeditated decisions. Musicians and martial artists in particular have a very strong kinesthetic sense. Another of our other senses is knowing which way is up. That little air bubble inside our ears is the actual sensor that gives us this ability, and vertigo is the phenomenon we experience when that sense fails. We also have senses that detect when we are hungry or when we need to go to the bathroom. There are sort of pressure detectors in our stomach and bladder that sense these things. Scientifically, anything that we can do that is informed by a physical "sensor" inside our bodies is a sense. We might actually have more than 22-24 of them. Some scientists believe we may have more than 30, but they have yet to identify the particular body parts that would act as sensors for such things. Long story short, Gavin is 100% right. He's just doing that thing where he fails to communicate it properly.

Gavin is right about the senses. Sensing hot and cold, sensing up and down, sensing if you're sick or healthy, sensing how fast you're moving, etc all get lumped together as the sense of touch but they're technically all distinct.

Your orientation is actually from your ears. There is a liquid in your ears that helps you with balance and determining your orientation. If you spin around, the dizziness is from the liquid sloshing around. In fact, the reason you get dizzy and stumble when you're drunk is that the liquid in your ears becomes less dense as you drink more, and it will slosh around much more

***** Without getting too indepth science.howstuffworks.com/life/question242.htm to prove my point. But if you wish, I could give you a more nuanced answer, such as things like blind sight, neural plasticity and sensory substitution. Basically in a nutshell, cutting edge science suggests that senses (at least not all of them) are not hardwired, but rather a learned and only the input mechanisms are predetermined (eyes, nose, nerve endings). If we can add new input mechanisms to the brain, the brain can then use it to create a new sense. One of the more interesting experiments was the magnetic compass belt. You can read more about it here: feelspace.cogsci.uni-osnabrueck.de/
@shadowmil
@shadowmil 10 жыл бұрын
***** Well we are crossing over into philosophy more then science. The fact is that temperature, pain and touch all use different kinds of sensing cells. There are even conditions where some people are unable to feel pain, but other touch sensations remain intact. That would suggest that pain senses and touch sense, while blurry, are infact different senses. Some people believe that we are actually all born with our senses connected... sight and sound are combined for example. So you might see a sound, or hear a color. And people who don't separate these senses are the ones that have synesthesia. Even to us normal people, our sense may not be as separated as we think. Take the mcgurk effect for example. Also studies have shown that two liquids, who have the same taste but have different coloring, people will think they taste different. And the texture of food can also change the taste. The fact is, sense and perception are extremely complicated subjects that we still don't fully understand. But it is fair enough to say that there is more too it then "There are five senses". And in that regard Gavin is far more correct then the rest of the people. At least in this subject.

Not exactly. It's more about the diffrence in 'energy', in this case the temperature, between your skin and the air. But what you said is still in the right direction and it certainly is part of your 'touch' sence. The term 'touch sence' just isn't correct in itself.

I remember Gavin saying in at least two podcasts how he hates when machines think they know what you want, and he hates when restaurants assume you want the same thing you got last time. In this episode he talks about how he loves how the machines at Schlosky's(?) brings up the thing he got last time and asks if he wants it again. It's absolutely perfect.
