Q: "If you loved season one, where do you go next?" A: The nearest psychiatric ward.

Remember, Disney picked up Doctor Who as part of the conditions to receive Bluey. Still, they were hoping it would generate some appeal. They certainly thought the scheduling monopoly would give them an edge in America. But there was NO appeal to the mythical audience they were convinced was out there. Further, Disney has a 'limited' volume and variety of content. So if anyone would be somehow enticed by a twerking Gatwa, Disney is not the forum at which these prospective viewers would invest time and money. This is a losing proposition for Disney by every metric you care to apply. So will they bother shelling out a few million more to keep this going? It seems unlikely. Then again, Disney isn't currently known for making wise fiscal decisions, so maybe they would pay for more of the same...

I’d be mortified - the season is too short, too below par and lacks back story content to be appealing

We only subscribe to one streaming service. D+ isn't one we subscribe to, and Dr Who series 1 hasn't given us incentive to bother with D+. Our kids seemingly have no interest in recent Dr Who.
@TheSenseSphereАй бұрын
it is such a shame that we are losing the kids. As we discussed previously, getting the kids behind the sofa is one of the prime notable things Dr Who was famous for. That seems to have been lost for slapstick, gimmicks and soap opera plots.

I am hoping the "Special Project" is a one-off special or short series of one-off soecials featuring ideas the fans would like to see - holding out for the 8th Doctor... I will keep dreaming ;-) But of course RTD and fan wishes are mutually exclusive.

Fellow Aussie here. Subscribed to Disney to watch the 3 Specials. Hoped back catalogue classic dr who would be there. Latest version is not for me & no classic who so unsubscribed. Yes Brendan, can say I was slightly peeved I had to pay to watch imo the worst version of dr who to date.

I think there are two things here. Disney Plus (and especially if you have kids) is great value for money. Likewise with Paramount Plus and they will see a surge when the last chunk of Yellowstone goes up in Nov. Overall the last season just wasn’t very good so I won’t be buying the collection on any medium and I think that’s where the ‘money’ comes from now. If the scripts were better and Disney got more involved with merchandising and physical sales it’s salvageable but I can’t see it. Another good short Brendan.
@Farsight-nc1ibАй бұрын
Could it be they subscribed to watch the latest series and Disney hoped they would explore what else was available, but were so disappointed in the show theycancelled their subscription? Perhaps the bad reviews of their other content like Star Wars meant they were never going to stick around?

Re. Talons of Wayne Chiang comment in the chat at 3.00 - The position of Script Editor still exists in NuWho and in the RTD2 era, the Script Editors are just less well known to the fans than the likes of Robert Holmes, Douglas Adams, Eric Saward and Andrew Cartmel. Agree on Horowitz, a good shout - IF he was interested.
@noblerees1Ай бұрын
Yes the script editor post is still there but RTD has said he won’t be questioned or challenged so not sure how much impact they can have
@robalexander8065Ай бұрын
@@noblerees1 A fair point. I guess also the fact the credits for NuWho have always been small and fast moving, whereas "Script Editor - Robert Holmes" was a single credit, large and in the middle of the screen in the credits of Classic Who.

@@robalexander8065 It's an admin job today. It in no way resembles the position in the original show which was "co-showrunner" in today's parlance. They're not known because they're irrelevant.
@robalexander8065Ай бұрын
@@codyw1Indeed. The showrunner job essentially is a mix of producer and script editor, I see so many calling JN-T a "showrunner" and some (usually younger fans) dont see the difference. For one thing, John was never a writer as such. I agree the SE role today is more a "checks and balances" type job, however, I am aware of some of the people who have filled the role, they are just not so big names in comparison. For one thing the turnover seems greater. To say they are irrelevant is a tad harsh but it does emphasize the sheer power of the showrunner role I suppose.

It serves Disney right that they didn't pay to stream all of the 2005 re-boot era up to the present in the first place. Had they done that, there would have been no need to piss about trying to re-brand the season as season one.

On the subject of back catalogue, does the US have the same Hulu/Disney overlap? Hulu Japan used to have season 1-12, but now since the Disney deal only 1-7. Not sure what happened to docs 12 and 13; I've been kind of wondering if the BBC is trying to disown those Doctors as it seems strange to remove half the seasons only. At first that seems an odd choice as Capaldi is pretty well liked amongst fans but it makes more sense when you factor in that the BBC started badmouthing Capaldi/ Moffat before they were even out the door and might internally be doubling down on the idea that is when it started to go wrong. Of course another way of looking at it was exactly a decade of Who was removed from the back catalogue so maybe that's relevant somehow.

Sorry also just to get a bit more technical as I understand it: UK iPlayer: UHD + Stereo Apple TV: HD + nearly Surround Blu-Ray: HD + 5.1 Surround US Disney Plus: UHD + 5.1 Surround The platform distribution is a bit of a mess as well Whilst Empire of Death was a mess Murray’s score in the cinema (and Millie) were the best bits.

I subscribed to D+ a year ago for the 60th & Church on Ruby. Then canceled. Came back in May for series 40/14/1. Canceled after Empire of Death. During those 7 weeks, watched 3 old Disney movies. Nothing else there interests me. Hbo/max currently airs Eccel-Whitaker - but I don't subscribe as I own all that myself, along with all classic. If D+ had Ec-Whit, maybe I'd keep D+, don't really know.
