There’s a real misunderstanding of Eleven’s character. He’s a schemer who puts up a facade, but struggles to control himself when his friends are involved, due to his love for them. Moffat’s Doctors are much closer to the Classic series. It’s probably trying a darker story from this era to show the different sides to Matt Smith’s performance.

I think that since the 15, 14, and 10th doctors all are very similar to each other they have developed an idea of the doctor that doesn’t allow for other core traits of the doctor to be at the forefront. I can’t imagine they’d like the 9th or 12th doctors, which is kinda funny since those are my two favourites.

Matts doctor is more alien and quirky cause of the trauma his past regeration went through, he let himself get too invloved and everything went wrong. So I've always seen it as the 11th doctor is healing from that but trying to act nonchalant about it. I think that's why your friends are struggling to connect with him, as they haven't seen how the 10th Doctor ended

i always read it as after everything he’s been through, he knows this is his last regeneration (not intended until the day of the doctor) and has chosen to leave everything behind and just enjoy his last years and this is how he chose to do it, embody a young man who brings joy to everyone around him. there’s obviously still the undercurrent of trauma that bubbles up to the surface sometimes, but the best example for me is the day of the doctor, where he had forgotten how many children were on gallifrey that day, not because it doesn’t matter, but because dwelling on that wouldn’t help him keep up this happy mad man scientist act, this is who he’s chosen to be

Next time there’s a Matt Smith episode up, I think they would LOVE Vincent And The Doctor. I’ve never seen it fail to make anyone cry. Showcases him at some of his best IMO. If we’re moving into a Capaldi episode at some point, I’d also love to throw my hat in the ring for either Listen, The Pilot, Return Of Doctor Mysterio, or Oxygen. Some of the best from the standpoint of being standalone Capaldi episodes.

It’s clear that the more whimsical alien side of Matt smiths doctor and the fairytale stuff that S5 was going for isn’t gelling with your friends, so I wonder if a more serious 11th Doctor story would work for them. I think if you want to add another Matt episode to the wheel it should be either the snowmen (for the gloomier retirement 11), the doctors Wife (a 11 whos taking the episodes plot seriously!) or you could pull a BBC America/2011 tumblr and try to sell them on series 6 with the impossible astronaut (it’s worth a shot) I’ve also been patiently waiting for them to eventually land on a 12th Doctor episode like Oxygen or the pilot: I think series 10 12 is a refinement of a lot of Moffats concepts for 11.

ok i get the criticisms, but what do you mean it didn't do anything innovative with the Christmas carol story. What else could they do to make it innovate? Instead of being shown old memories, the Doctor is completely re-inventing his memories. The added drama of Catherine Jenkins character and her 'lifespan' to weave the story around. And ultimately, at the end of the day they are trying to tell the Christmas Carol as a Doctor Who story. If it was changed any further and didn't have the references by the Doctor or title, you wouldn't recognize it as the Christmas Carol. Love the series, don't want to be a hater but that criticism is just fundamentally unfair The fish criticism and ship criticism more or less go hand in hand. The ship narrative only exists to be able to tell the story, so it being forgotten doesn't say much. And the fish idea is what ties the two plots together, I can understand feeling that it isn't really utilized well after the first Christmas but I think it's a very cool concept for the episode.

fr and the twist of the ghost of christmas future not being him showing an old man how he dies alone and miserable, but instead treating the old man AS the ghost of christmas yet to come and having him change in real time as suddenly he remembers this exact moment from both ends is such an incredible twist that implements the time travel to its fullest extent for this story! Like what more do you want from this story, y'know?

Honestly, I've never liked Heaven Sent even as a massive Doctor Who fan. Tbh, the entire Capaldi era doesn't do anything for me so that might explain it. I've always found it a massive snooze-fest and a complete mess even with context, so showing anyone that episode as a one-off would be chaos. I've never understood the love for it tbh. Imo it's not even the best episode of Series 9, let alone the best episode of the entire show/television.

Also, we really need a reaction to Christopher Eccleston, he's the second best Doctor but criminally underrated and there's been no reaction to 9 yet. I believe the 12th doctor is technically a reset. Remember Matt Smith technically was granted another set of regenerations as he truly is the 12th. Capaldi technically would be the 13th but he's deemed the 12. Anyway the 12th has to rediscover what it means to always strive to be nice but never fail to be kind.

Back when Smith first became the Doctor I too didn't really like him as much, but later grew to love him, primarily through the actors talents and the way he eased into portraying the Doctor. I feel like Moffatt as show runner had tendency to make the Doctor seem like a god, rather than just a man with a blue box travelling through space and time. It's the same reason why Sherlock kinda fell off, Moffatt made it about how amazing and intelligent Sherlock was without the audience being able to actually follow to see his conclusions, making it seem like he's omniscient. Moffatt works well writing one off episodes but as a show runner he has no one to rein him in and it really shows. I remember a lot of people disliking Capaldi and eventually warming up to him, yet again I feel like people might've been sour toward him because of Moffatt, and the fact he made the show all about Clara when she was introduced probably didn't help. (btw I do still like Moffatt and his writing it's just that I feel he's better suited writing under someone else as show runner like RTD)

Loving the reactions, just want to request a couple episodes. Please get them to watch Dalek, it's one of the best episodes of the show and introduces the Daleks perfectly for new viewers of the show. And as the first two parter you should show them, my recommendation is for Human nature, and the Family of Blood. Possibly the best story of the entire franchise, and interestingly, the ending shows a lot of that true alien nature of The Doctor that they were struggling with a bit coming from Smith, it could serve as good bridge for that side of the character. Either way, keep up the good work ❤

You’re right to say that 11 & 12 are more alien. They’re certainly eccentric just like the Classic era of Doctor Who in certain ways. Your friends seem to prefer more down to earth emotional Doctors who behave more human. It would be nice if you showed them the 12th Doctor story Flatline with the chilling boneless aliens or Deep Breath? Or if it’s the 9th Doctor then Dalek. Would be great if you all reacted to the very first episode of Doctor Who An Unearthly Child. See how more of an anti-hero the Doctor used to be and how darker and mysterious in tone the series was.

There's a popular theory that 11th's doctor has Aspergers. There's an important fact that Matt Smith DOES have aspergers. The actor is playing what he knows. It is interesting watching the course of the show where he gets some of his mannerisms from, most of them happen on screen. as much as it pains me to see people not really like 11, i can understand what they’re saying about him being so different from what they’re used to, having seen so much of david and ncuti. to me, it seems like ncuti’s doctor is molded almost directly off of david’s, or at the very least most heavily influenced by him more so than anyone else. so having two VERY similar personalities, then coming to matt’s doctor, which is different in general but definitely from david and ncuti’s, i can absolutely imagine it being a bit of a shock to the system. still would love to see them explore more of matt’s character as well as 9 and 12 to get a more well rounded idea of who the doctor can be.

Any Doctor's first/regenration episode is never a good first eisode to show a new viewer & the 11th hour was not 11 at his best (could have been worse, you could have shown Colin Bakers first episode, that would have put them off Doctor Who completely!). I'm gonna be real, I'd say this Christmas special is not even in my top 5. I think I prefer any 10th Doctor one over this one. So I'm kinda with them. Their take is understandable. But I've seen other people enjoy it and I was hoping it would be a good one to redeem the 11th.
