@@RTFM I also have played every Civilization game, but similarly really put in a TON of time in Civ 2 especially. Due to the more simple graphics, it was easier to make new units and I think I spent at least as much time building custom scenarios as I did actually playing the game.

As much as I love A New Dawn, one major gripe I have with it is how victory is determined. I’d rather have a civ style “scientific, cultural, military, ecenomic” etc victory thing, like in the previous Civ board game. Even so I love the heck out of A New Dawn and I’m gonna bring it to my next board game meetup!

OK, this is a very good explanation. HOWEVER, if you are a newbie to games like this, this is a very complicated game and it will take you MUCH longer than 20 minutes to learn it! I have watched this video several times and read the 15-page instructions several times and I'm only starting to understand it and prepare for my first game. I am planning on covering the WotR expansions, though I'm not sure when. I was originally planning on waiting until the Kings expansion came out and teach all of the expansions, but it's been pushed back and as of right now there's no official release date. I'll probably just end up covering Lords and Warriors, but it'll be a while before I can get to them.

I have a decades-long history with Civ (everything except 6), and my 3 teenage nephews play a lot of Catan (with expansions). I bought them this game for Christmas. Afterward, I decided to watch a couple videos on it so that I could understand it well enough to start playing it with them the next time I see them... Instead... after watching a couple videos... I honestly don't think my nephews will ever have the patience or time to learn how to play something like this. I've failed as an uncle. 😭 Should've bought them tools. lol

Hello, I have a couple of questions. I hope that you will answer first. I can defend the distance through the city-states. What are the wonders of nature for? For example, there is a rope on it if I get it, then how exactly can I get this oil?
@RTFM2 жыл бұрын
Hey, I'm not 100% sure I understand all your questions, but I'll try my best to answer them. 1. You can't attack through city states (unless you have the flight card), so a city state will defend you in a sense. 2. Controlling a natural wonder gives you a reusable resource. Let's say you put a control token on a diamond natural wonder. Take the token, and now you can use it whenever you would spend a diamond. You don't discard it like regular resources, but you can only use it once per turn. Hope that helps! If not, let me know and we'll keep trying to figure it out.

If attacking a conquered city-state hex, is the combat value still 8 or is it dependent on the underlying terrain type? Thanks so much for the amazing explanations!
@RTFM Жыл бұрын
Thanks! After being conquered, it's just a city, so it will depend on the underlying terrain, which I believe is always grassland.

I love your videos, but somehow whenever I play this game I just don't really enjoy it. Do you have any tips for getting the most out of it? I have played lots of games with 2 and one with 4
@RTFM3 жыл бұрын
A couple things. I would say that it's a better experience with 3 or 4, though that can be tricky these days. Have you tried it with the expansion? I strongly prefer playing the expansion to playing without. For me it makes it feel a lot more like the video game. Other than that, going in knowing that it's a lighter game than it seems is an important mindset. Civilization brings to mind a very heavy experience, but this is a firmly midweight game (in my opinion). Hope that helps!
@MoriMemento1173 жыл бұрын
I have to agree with Shea on this. The main reason I have not decided on getting A New Dawn is simply that my usual player count of 2 just isn't a good fit with a territory control game like this. It is amazing how much an experience changes with just adding a player or two. There are games I only pull out when we get the oft desired 3rd player! My metric (which isn't perfect, but it is a good start) is to go to BGG and click on the recommended player count. If the "best" votes double or at least outnumber the "not recommended" then I take notice of the game as a two player option.

Why don’t people who make these ultra complicated boardgames just make their own videos for us to watch instead of expecting us to read the manual which no one wants to do..? they don’t realize that they’re making a lot less money because of that
@RTFM2 ай бұрын
Not sure if you were hoping for a serious answer to this question, but I am in a pretty good position to provide one. There are a few reasons that all come together to influence this kind of decision. First off, making tutorial videos is difficult, so a lot of the time when publishers make their own videos they're...not great. And that can be worse than not having a video at all. They sometimes hire people like me to make them, but we aren't cheap because, well like I said, these videos are hard to make. And then you have videos like this, which was asked for by my Patreon, so FFG didn't have to pay anything for it. Knowing that these kinds of videos get made, some publishers will just put out their game hoping that a tutorial will get made without their asking for one. Also some people do prefer reading manuals to watching videos, so it's not like these are a total prerequisite for a game being successful. So unfortunately, while it would be nice if every game came with a high quality tutorial for those who need it, it's probably not gonna happen for most of them.

So I’ve run into a problem with 2 players only. In the rules it says that at the start of the 1st players turn if a player has completed 3 objectives they win the game. But this isn’t entirely fair to the first player as they won’t have the opportunity to stop the victory of player 2. Has anyone else come across this or is there a clarification?
@RTFM2 жыл бұрын
So a lot of games do something like this, and it's a means of ensuring that each player gets to play the same number of turns. If player 1 got to go again, they would have played one more round than player 2, and thus would've had an advantage overall. While it's true that they can't respond to the 2nd player ending the game, being able to take the first turn each round is it's own bonus, so it ends up evening out in the long run. Also, this is how you play regardless of player count, so it's not just a 2 player thing.
@riverotter9152 жыл бұрын
Quick question...trying to understand how resource tiles work. Once you use a resource...what happens to the tile? Are you able to get a resource again from that tile again? Or is it a one time use only thing?
@RTFM2 жыл бұрын
When you get a resource tile, it's a one time use thing. The exception is controlling natural wonders. As long as you control the location, you can use its associated resource once per turn.

By civ style are you referring to the Civilization franchise, or just civ-building games in general? There's another Civ board game, though I haven't played it. @@dnaseb9214 With that specific hook, I'd say Through the Ages is probably worth checking out. It's a big game, and it's a little more abstracted than A New Dawn, but a lot of people hold it in very high regard. Of course, if you're just looking for a really good 4x game, my favorite will always be Twilight Imperium. Of course, that one comes with the big caveat that it takes all day to play, so...not for everyone. If you're still looking for suggestions, BGG has a good thread about this exact subject.
