I agree with Rob about the boy, he was literally begging for them to save him. I don’t think I could’ve just left him to get eaten alive. The difference between Rick and Shane is that the apocolypse pushes Rick to evolve and Shane just devolves! Although Rick is able to get his hands dirty (as we saw in the bar) he keeps his sense of moral justice (saving those he perceives as good or by doing what he feels is the right thing. It's great surviving the apocolypse, even better feeling like you deserve to). Shane on the other hand doesn't care about right or wrong or really even Laurie and Carl (rape is about power and let's be real...if you care about someone, you ain't going to give them those nightmares). Really he decided Laurie and Carl were his and he was in charge. Rick came and took all that power and that idea of family away and we are seeing just what lengths he would go through to get all that power back. Rape, Murder...etc
@fizzychizzy5 жыл бұрын
Its def about power. Shane couldn't handle not being the one in control and he lost it.
@johnjungkook27215 жыл бұрын
Totally agree. Shane is a narcissist, which is like being a junkie - Lori and Carl were his supply of support and validation. They made him feel powerful. Now he's freaking out because the people around him are following Rick now, and he needs to satisfy his ego and be in control again.
@leaflenster73405 жыл бұрын
I find it interesting that you say Shane "devolved", because I kind of wonder if he truly did devolve or if this was the "real" Shane all along. As in, this manner of world brought out who he really is. It's possible he did just devolve, but based on his conversation with Rick in 1x01, it feels more like he was just blanketed by society back then. Also, Lori is pretty old fashioned with gender roles, which is overall okay because she truly means no harm by it, but I think Shane /enjoyed/ that. It's exactly like you say: it's about the power. He felt he had power in that relationship because Lori tries her best to support the decisions and thoughts of her partner (which at one point was Shane and all). In 1x03, she tells him he "lost the privilege" of telling her what to do. I think Shane probably did have feelings for her to some extent, but I also believe he liked the relationship because it gave him power. Shane also does /not/ have a good history with women (again, 1x01), and I actually feel like that was foreshadowing his relationship with Lori falling apart like this. Notably, as soon as Lori starts making her own decisions (i.e. going off to find Rick because she doesn't feel safe with Shane in charge and without Rick around), SHANE IMMEDIATELY GOES AFTER HER WHEN HE FINDS OUT. He's controlling and manipulative and it's honestly, sincerely no wonder Lori had so much trouble handling the whole thing. Shane plays the pity party against her to make her feel bad about things and to accept him back. He should have just accepted it was over, accepted it for what it was (he's back, everything's okay now, they deserve to be back together, etc.), and moved on from it. He could've still loved her, and that would be fine, but it's when it starts to force himself into her life where he's not wanted that his love becomes legitimately problematic. I know a lot of people hate Lori because she seems to go back and forth, but put yourself in her position. She told Shane to stay because he'd saved her son's life, and yeah, now she's turned around and realized she doesn't feel SAFE with him around. But also, she had a history with this man before the world became what it is now, even if it was just "my husband's best friend and co-worker". It can be VERY hard to let an old friendship go like that, and in this situation, where the only people in her life that she had before all this were him, Rick and Carl? Even harder. But also, when this same man is manipulating your emotions at every turn? When he's around every fuckin' corner you walk past? She doesn't know how to handle Shane. I also feel part of it is because she's afraid of him, and that that's why it took her so long to tell Rick both times she brought Shane up to him (because remember, she didn't say a WORD to Rick about the CDC the night she was crying, and she was TERRIFIED that night). Really though, I'm appreciating seeing a lot of this actual discussion about Shane in the comments, because most often I see people who love him and brush aside all his awful flaws when they're pretty extreme flaws. I mean, it's okay to like and enjoy a character, and he's extremely well written, but he is NOT the guy you'd want to be stuck with in an apocalypse. The barn thing was the right call, sure (even if he went about it in a very shitty way), but that doesn't make him a good person. What I question, again, is whether he ever was and this world brought out who he /always/ was, or if he truly devolved and became this possessive along the way.
@angie-tq4ew5 жыл бұрын
I always got the feeling that Shane was jealous of Rick. Rick was the Sheriff, and Shane was a Deputy Sheriff. Rick was his boss. Rick has Lori, and Rick has Carl. And now he knows about the baby, Rick possibly has his baby too. But more than that, Rick has real compassion, stability, honor & an ethical code that he lives by, that is so ingrained in him that even in a zombie apocolypes, he is still able to maintain it. Shane has none of this. He lives by the code of self preservation. Which is fine if you were living alone, but as part of a group....not so much. :-)

True, the only thing that make sense is rick doesnt feel bad about killing the two men in the bar but he feels bad about leaving a young man who shot at them and is now hurt, and trying to save him puts them at further risk. @leaflenster73405 жыл бұрын
Gonna put this first because I feel it's the most important of this rant disaster (by which I mean THIS COMMENT IS LONG), but between Shane and Rick, just remember Rick would ALSO do ANYTHING to keep Carl alive, no matter who else died in the group. He would put Carl and Lori before anyone else too if it came down to it. But also, just remember Rick doesn't ONLY care about /them/. He's still doing everything he can for everyone in that group. He didn't have to chase after Sophia. He didn't have to go back and save Glenn. He didn't have to go back for Merle. What he does is for the benefit of the entire group/everyone in it. Yes, he would (rightfully) put his son and wife before anyone else in the /world/, but that is not Shane's wife nor his kid no matter what /he/ wants to believe, and yet Shane would sacrifice anyone heartlessly (cough otis) so those two live. Rick wouldn't sacrifice someone for them if there was any other goddamn way in the /world/. Rick puts his family above all else, yes, but he doesn't disregard the rest of the world for them. Daryl is just pissed off and wants to be left alone. He's annoyed because he's trying to distance himself and Carol won't stop trying to talk to him. He put everything he had into finding Sophia and she turned out to be dead all along. He's got anger issues, yeah, but there are reasons behind him acting like that to Carol. He just doesn't handle emotion well. Honestly I would argue Carol is the one who needs to back off and give the poor guy some space. Technically, he's right. Sophia wasn't his and none of that was his problem. He CHOSE to get involved, and it ended badly so now he wants out. Ultimately though, it's him grieving. He gave Carol a nod when he walked inside the house as if to say everything was cool, but then Carol got near him again like she was about to say something and he got pissed again and walked out. It's kinda like, hey, just because I'm implying I didn't mean to be an ass right then doesn't mean keep bugging me, etc. He's obviously extremely annoyed and she won't leave him be. I'd be getting pissed off and blowing up too if I wanted to be left alone and the same person wouldn't stop following me around, including even after making it clear I wanted to be left alone. As for Lori, well, yeah, I'd go looking for Rick too. Like hell I'd stay in a group with Shane at the helm and both Rick and Hershel MIA. This episode proved Shane is manipulative and is trying to force Lori to "realize her love" for him. When she went quiet, I strongly feel that's an effect of the manipulation because Shane REALLY pushes that kind of thing. She was right to tell Rick what she did at the end because he needed to know. It was getting out of hand, and everything she said was honestly what was going on. I'm proud of her for not feeling too pressured not to say anything. That kind of shit happens in abusive relationships where the one being abused doesn't say anything out of fear. The thing is, Shane is all sunshine and rainbows for her when they're together, but once they're not he starts all this manipulative shit and wants Rick out of the picture and wants her back. Shane is like the book definition of an abusive boyfriend/ex boyfriend who will trap his ex girlfriend to get her back. I fell like y'all are gonna hate Lori over stuff it really seems like most people don't understand, and it's really a shame. Lori's human. She makes mistakes. She reacts in the moment when tensions are high. She's sick of Shane going on about this shit instead of just being happy for her and that she's alive. I definitely agree that Shane does NOT give a fuck about Rick. He even /admitted/ he /doesn't/ care about anyone else in the group, including Rick, when he stated he only cares about Lori and Carl. The worst part is that Carl doesn't even know or realize he's on good terms with this guy who has aimed a gun at his father, sexually assaulted his mother at the CDC and keeps manipulating her and just WON'T leave her alone. Thing is, Shane IS only about himself. He doesn't "care" about Lori and Carl. He doesn't care about how /they/ feel or he would've dropped this by now. It's about what Shane wants and what Shane feels and nobody else. It IS all me, me, me with him. I did this, I did that. For Rick supposedly being his best friend, he NEVER mentions wanting him to be safe or alive or happy. Ever. In fact, he literally tells Lori the opposite, stating he wished Rick WAS dead in that hospital and then gives some bullshit reason behind it. Like, idk about y'all, but I'd be wanting my best friend in the very top list of people I'd want to keep safe in an apocalypse. In terms of bringing someone who attacked you back to camp, I can kinda agree on that, though not for WHY Rick did it. Getting information on that group that really was not far out from them is important imo. Also, Shane was trying to go to Fort Benning /before/ the CDC.

@thatgirlreacts54653 жыл бұрын
I agree with Rob. Rick trying to save a kid, because yes, a teen is still a kid, is the right attitude at this point in time. It’s only been two or three weeks after Rick woke up, it’s not the time to give up on your humanity because once you let go of that to preserve your survival then what kind of life is left for you to live? You won’t even be able to live with yourself. Also, the child soldiers was a pretty good comparison, idk why the other guys didn’t get it. It’s kids shooting at you, granted child soldiers are brain washed, but it’s still children with a gun shooting at people and you might have to kill them to save yourself but you wouldn’t want to and if you were put in a scenario where you had the opportunity to save them you might because they’re still a kid. You might say the difference is those are brain washed kids, like I said, and randall chose to team up with those guys but you don’t know the full story. Maybe he felt he had to choose to be with those guys and he had to have their back because if he didn’t he’d be left all alone and he was afraid of that. Who knows? The point is, in that moment Rick didn’t have the full story of why Randall was with them and what kind of person Randall is. All he knew was that he had killed two of Randall’s people first which is prob why they were shooting at them as far as Rick could tell, and that this was a kid who had been left for dead.

Rick and Shane are two sides of different extreams. Logically Shane has a better point when it comes to making hard decisions. But at the same time he's mentally unstable and would let everyone in the group die if it meant he would have Lori. Rick is the moral compass of the group and would die for the safety of his group but his kind mentality is a risk to the group and he has to learn that you can't save everyone. In top of that saving that kid is probably the worst idea he could have had. Both have points. But both are fucking up.

Rick sure was "kind" when he killed those guys in the bar? Rick is not the extreme. Rick is literally the BALANCE. Dale is one extreme and the moral compass. Shane is the other. Rick is the balance between the two. But when you side with Shane, you think any compromise is an extreme. that is what is wrong with Shane in the first place. There is more than just one way to handle things.
@sethemerson66845 жыл бұрын
@@fizzychizzy Yes he shot those guys but only because they were about to murder them in the spot. You are correct about Dale but the reason I don't count him is because he is not in a position of leadership like Rick (And if Rick were to die Shane would be the one to take his place) and that's what makes Rick and Shane the two extremes. They both are strong leaders who have different views on how the group should be led. Rick shot those men yes but as soon as he got the chance to save someone he took it while Shane would have left him for dead or killed the kid himself
@johnjungkook27215 жыл бұрын
You're way too simplistic with that analysis. Rick is not an idealist. Why wasn't he out every day looking for Sophia? Why didn't he stretch out an olive branch to the guys in the bar? Why doesn't he feel guilty that he killed them both? He's not a literal survival-pragmatist zombie like Shane, but he takes measured risks to do the right thing.

And while I agree that Lori shouldn’t have left on her own because she has literally no experience out there and so I sorta understand him lying to her, how can Wells not see the whole picture? You gotta see it from Lori’s perspective. I mean, here is this woman who is worried about her husband and Shane patronized her by deciding what HE thinks she should do and lies to her so he can get her to do what HE BELIEVES is right. He doesn’t have the right to make her choices for her and lying to her to get her to do what he thinks she should be doing is hella manipulative. I know he was trying to keep her safe, I know. So, as an outsider, I PARTIALLY agree, but you gotta understand that she is a grown woman who can make her own choices. If she wants to go out there and risk her life to find her husband then that’s her choice to make, nobody else’s. The point isn’t whether that’s the right choice it not. The point is you can’t act like you know better and lie to her to get her to do what you think is best. It’s patronizing, manipulative and dismissive. I could never be with someone like Shave who will lie to me because they have decided they know better, like what I know and what I think doesn’t matter. It’s disrespectful. You can’t act like people aren’t capable of making their own decisions. Even if something is a mistake, it’s a mistake for others to make, you can’t act like you know better and lie to people to get them to do what you want/think should be done. Shave also needs to respect the fact that Lori is choosing Rick over him. He can’t accept it because it’s the only thing he had so he has convinced himself she loved him like he thinks he loves her. But the thing is, whether she has feelings for him or bot, she has made her choice and he needs to respect that. It’s problematic that this guy Wells doesn’t understand any of this.

Pat, Shane did not do the right thing by killing all the walkers in that barn. Yes, they needed to be killed, Hershel was wrong, but the way Shane went about it was wrong on all counts. First of all, you have to be respectful of Hershel’s choice to keep them, it’s his land, his choice. You don’t like it, you can leave. So you ESPECIALLY have to respect his choice to keep them in the barn if you want to stay. Then later, with time, you can make Hershel see the error in his ways in a manner that doesn’t put you against him because you’re trying to stay in his house. Second of all, they wasted a shit ton of bullets nothing. Bullets should be a last resort since they run out. They should have gone about it with a plan to get them out a few at a time to kill them with a knife. That way they get trained to do that AND don’t waste bullets. Third of all, shooting up all of those guns at once makes a hell of a lot of noise putting everyone at risk if there are more walkers in the area because they’ll follow the sound. Lastly, opening up the barn and forcing everyone’s hands like that puts them in danger because they are not all trained at shooting at moving walkers. As for Sophia, when you’re looking for a missing person the possibilities of never finding them or of finding them dead will always be real, it doesn’t mean your search is invalid if one of those possibilities become a reality. They were right to look for her, this was only Day 5 since she had gone missing. They had no way of knowing she had been in the barn all of this time so finding her there does not invalidate the need to search for her. Shane was literally wrong to do the barn shooting on ALL COUNTS.

I don't understand what is with shane thinking he is in love with lori and carl is his as well. Rick was "dead" for what? like few weeks, and that was enough for shane to get close enough to lori/carl compared to the years rick has been with them for... I also don't understand lori. Remember the first episode when rick said he and lori were having fights and lori wants rick to yell at her more... so basically she wants a more shane kind of guy?

So basically some of y’all saying that in the case of a zombie apocalypse if a woman with a small child and a presumed dead spouse is saved by another man, they’re his property? Lori has already at this point had EVERY conversation with Shane she possibly could to make him see reason since Rick came back. She thought he was dead, he wasn’t. SHE confessed to Rick about the baby and what went on while he was away,not Shane, his so called ‘boy’. Finding out from Dale the extent of Shane and what he WOULD do is was had her in Rick’s ear… he tried to rape her and keeps trying to get her to basically say her and her children belong to him now based on false information HE gave her in the first place… As a woman, I will say that best friend of deceased husband or not the camp in the woods with little food would have had to be upgraded a few notches before ANYONE got these cheeks willingly, but that’s just me. But on that note if you want look at it again Shane had them in a camp in the woods that clearly wasn’t safe, Rick found them a farm with livestock and he was likeable enough for Hershel to let them stay… So if she was ever confused on what to do and who to be with, Shane’s actions directly at her and as told to her by Dale are what made up her mind and got her acting like Cersei all in Rick ear letting him know Shane got to go. No means no zombie apocalypse and all boo.🤷🏾♀️
