I also forgot to add-Scott Wilson, who plays Hershel, stated that he didn’t think his character was mad/angry here, but more shocked because before that time, he never thought of the walkers as anything more than “sick people.” Watching Shane, he knew he was wrong. It doesn’t change the fact, though, that they were his friends and family. There would have been a right way to handle this, and Shane certainly didn’t do that! This is still the best episode in the series and one of the greatest twists in television history. It wouldn't have been possible without a lot of things coming together. The show had overspent and was dealing with staffing issues (switching showrunners, etc.) so the pace of season 2 was considerably slower than earlier seasons. A number of episodes had to be filmed on the farm with less walkers onscreen and a drawn out uneventful "search for Sophia" padding out the runtime. The sheer length of the search added, in a very real way, to the impact of the final reveal. Both the audience & the characters were at the limits of their endurance and really needed a big win. It was at that moment that the ironic tragedy of the final act was dropped in our laps. Very powerful. Had it not been for the money/bts problems, I doubt any network would've approved of such a huge gamble. Imo this was the greatest moment in the entire series and it was attributable as much to the skill of the writing staff as it was to circumstances of it's production.

Yup. First thing I did when I found out you would be doing 3 episodes a week was calculate when this episode would come. Like most others, this is the episode that I knew I would not stop watching no matter what. Some of the most memorable things for me are the things that arent necessarily said, but are still powerful. Prime example being how once the group found out about the walkers in the barn, of course their reaction was to kill them. They are dangerous so they need to be eliminated, no need to think about it... its just what you do. Then Sofia comes out of the barn and nobody moves a muscle. It really hammers home that even though you know they are gone, you look at them and still see a loved one. Suddenly the ridiculous notion of keeping your friends and family locked up in a barn after they have turned doesnt seem so silly. Everytime I see this episode, and the camera pans over the group as they realize that last walker is Sofia, a voice in my head goes "Yeah, not so easy now huh?" And guess what? Its Hershal's voice.

The acting performances, the score swelling in, and that finish as the camera pans out. It's haunting. Rick taking the responsibility of ending it is damn powerful.

Forgot to mention earlier. When I saw this I think about Ricks “prayer” at the church. He was sent exactly where Sofia was at... Prayer answered? In a harsh way.. yes

This episode... You literally understood everyone's point of view... But ultimately, Shane was right. It's just unfortunate what he was right about. Hopefully these losses will be the thing that makes everyone band together now. Strength in numbers in a world like this. And everyone is valuable.

Your longtime followers must have neglected to tell you this show was just plain emotionally brutal. :P I love that it was Rick who shot Sophia. Shane always goes on about making the tough calls but I'd say to date that's the hardest decision Rick has had to make in this apocalypse - maybe ever.

Tenpinmaster Oh it hit hard for Lacey and I. Lacey I knew wouldn’t be able to talk, and I was in no shape to carry and intelligent convo afterwards. Steve

This is the first of many episodes that come out of nowhere and catch you off guard. The shock factor episode. This episode made me realize how good of a series TWD was gonna be. Plenty more to come. Great reaction guys 👍

I remember watching this episode for the first time (like you it was many years after it had been transmitted). Jon Bernthal (Shane) does bat-shit crazy/angry like no-one else. He's absolutely brilliant in this episode. As for the shocking ending, that really got me too. I think both Carol and Carl's reactions are what breaks my heart. No-one is safe on this show, not even kids. In a way, it's a callback to the very first episode with the little girl walker in that too. I've also gotta give a shout-out to composer Bear McCreary, who really ramps up both the emotion and the inevitability that someone's got to put Sophia down.

Can you imagine being one of those people, myself included who had been watching the show since the show first came out and knowing there was a mid season break after this very intense episode? It truly leaves you wanting more. Fortunately you wont know this feeling until quite some time lol

That was the mid season finale. We had to wait almost 3 months to see the next episode. This show's actors should all have multiple awards.

It feels like the scene with Sophia coming out of the barn showed that anyone could die. It was a heartbreaking moment.

And this is exactly why Jon Bernthal “Shane Walsh” got the roll of Frank Castle aka The Punisher. 😏

The slow pan upwards from sofias feet is awesome. It have that build up of who is it. And as you start to see a small figure being slowly shown. Everybodys heart drops. Also we see Shane not able to pull the trigger on Sofia. Eventhough he yelled that sofia was dead and everything, seeing her actually dead i think took him by surprise and he felt guilty probably.

Exactly, in season 1 episode 3 and deleted scene of season 2 episode 1 showed Shane did cared for her.

I think every fan was shocked and shed a tear the first time they came to the end of this episode. One of the best of TWD.

The biggest shock of the season was finding out that Sophia was in that barn the whole time and since Otis was the one who kept bringing walkers to the barn it means she was dead the same day she went missing or overnight (the whole shooting Carl situation was the day after she was gone)

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve watched this episode, it never gets easier. Steve, I think I even heard your voice crack when Sophia came out of that barn. I’m sure I’m not the first to tell you, the actress who played Sophia was having nightmares from filming and her parents asked to have her released from the show.

I knew from season 1 episode 1 that I loved this show and that I loved the characters. But this episode .....this is the one that made me realize that I was totally engrossed in this show.....that I actually , truly cared for the characters and that a tv show had somehow gotten into my head and my heart like no other show/movie ever had before or since. It was when I realized that TWD was a different animal all its own and that I was in for a very long, emotional ride. Love y'all reactions Lacey and Steve 💜

Just now stumbled across your channel. I enjoy watching walking dead reactions to get that feeling from when I first watched the episodes. I'll admit I dont have enough time to watch the entire series along with you, but i'll be surfing your channel through all the major events, and I look forward to taking this journey again with you both. Sofia's death was one of the worst spoilers I've ever received, if not the worst. I used to work nights, so i would always miss the live airing. I jumped on facebook around midnight while taking a break and my buddy posted "i can't believe she was in the barn the whole time". I still don't think I've completely forgiven him for that post.

Poor Carol. This episode gets me everytime. Literally just noticed everyone's individual reaction to seeing Sophia. Watching it the first time you get so distracted by Carol, Daryl, Carl, Hershel and Lori's reactions I didn't even pay attention to everyone else's. Andrea panting in shock. Shane looking defeated as he throws his hands on his head like "Okay, I didn't mean for this, this is bad." Ricks head is turned is disbelief. T Dog is left stunned and still. Glenn looks like he's had all hope sucked out of him. The actors are just incredible. This is why I love watching it again through your eyes. You get to see things you missed. Also, shoutout to Madison Lintz who did a great job portraying Sophia.
