if i'm correct, that would be the same as plugging just about anything in, a pc cant magically draw more power from 1 outlet, power supplies just convert the amps to more voltage.

My pc used to do that, one of our lights was messed up or something that made it super sensitive to that kind of thing. Turn the washer on? Flicker. Turn the vacuum on? Flicker. Turn on the pc? Flicker

Actually, my 2009 Mac Pro does that when I even wake it up from sleep. My lights will flicker and the cd drives will click and the hard drives spin up. I must say, the power supply in that thing is 950 watts, so it's pretty dang close to Linus'. Also, like other people have mentioned, the vacuum I use does dim the lights when I use it, but I don't know the wattage of it

Man 15 years ago I was so excited for SLI, but never got a chance to get that 2nd card through multiple mainboards. Looking back, I'm glad I never spent the money.
@PnPride2 жыл бұрын
@cpong I never could treat SLI seriously, for a 100% more investment you would have usually something like 20-30% increase in performance and not in every game.. seems like a waste of money for me.
@GiuseppeGaetanoSabatelli Жыл бұрын
2x GTX 690 (i.e. GTX 680 4GB, the EVGA FTW+ card) was probably the best scaling and also in the best era for SLI (2011-2015 games and all the SLI games that were released after the 8800 GTX like Crysis). GTX 680 SLI was between a GTX 970 and GTX 980 in performance, and GTX 690 SLI beats a GTX 1080 (non-Ti). The benefit of SLI had 2 primary reasoning back then: 1. A way for a gamer who invested $599 on an EVGA GTX 680 FTW+ in 2012 to invest only $300-400ish in 2015-2017 on a second EVGA GTX 680 FTW+ and reach the performance of a $549 980 or $599 1080 without having to invest in a completely new system, or more importantly: 2. A way for a gamer in 2012 to spend $1200 on the performance that no one else gets to experience for another half a decade. Basically become a god. Seriously, that's why people are paying $1300 for an RTX 4090 lmfaooo. You gotta pay for the best. You could 3-way SLI and even Quad-SLI the 600 series cards, and in that era (Witcher, Tomb Raider, Crysis, Arkham, etc.) the games did actually have good SLI scaling (as shown by Linus here in this video with Tomb Raider). So that was a magical time, indeed. Not to mention even if the game didn't explicitly scale that well with SLI, SLI still have you a ton of headroom when moving to higher resolutions or rendering SSAA. So, yeah 15 years ago when 8800 GTX SLI pioneered it and you got excited, the sweet spot was 11 years ago to 8 years ago. Sadly, that era is over, as nvidia would rather you buy a new $1000 GPU every other year rather than pick up a second 2-4 year old GPU. Shame really. The technology is where the future is as nvidia has been saying "Moore's Law is dead" and are trying to justify how overpriced/low performance some of their new cards are compared to expectations. Sounds like 2, 3, and 4 way SLI should be the future, but that doesn't maximize their bottom line. tl;dr if you can go back in time to the mid 2010s, try out the EVGA GTX 680 FTW+ 4GB (i.e. GTX 690) in SLI. Enjoy.

@@Erowens98 nvidia doesn't have "production capacity", they don't own a fabs. So there is few possible reason why you can't get these cards - they didn't order many at all (didn't book enough production lines), samsung have very low yields or as third nvidia make artificial shortage to pump up prices over their own msrp for some reason (higher manufacturing cost of cards than planned due high power demand or something).
@gorjy96104 жыл бұрын
@@Erowens98 samsung have enough of fabs to produce millions of units without issue. If someone order them and pay for manufacturing. So nvidia can buy more today and less tomorrow without anyone needing to spend more to produce more for short limited time, samsung will just switch these fabs to something else according to their schedule. And about monopoly...that will change in a month. Nvidia know that and that's why they go with lower prices this time. You don't need to be expert to know that if competition make cards on node with better yields, using cheaper memory (and with less chips with more narrow bus which give them advantage not just with price per GB but also with logistic cost) which use less power so need less expensive power management components and cooler so they can make cheaper cooling solution....with all that they card can be cheap. And even is it slower little bit if its cheaper hundreds of dollars they will sell better than your expensive product. That's main reason for price drop. Or you believe they are just good guys? Sure, today you can think people will buy them even for 1000, I'll ask you in one month will they still buy them for that amount.

@agastyaparashar29412 жыл бұрын
@Standard User NameThe price is fairly expensive, and doesn't last that long, and its prime time where it performs the best is only about 2-3 years from once you've bought it. It's just not worth it to get a gaming laptop imo. I'd wait for about another year or 2.
@agastyaparashar29412 жыл бұрын
@Standard User Name I'd atill rather play with a console since games would be finely tuned for it, or a high-end pc, the only reason I see myself getting a gaming laptop would be because of the fact it's mobile. Just by watching this video, I learned that: 1) PSU Efficiency is how well it can sustain its rated wattage. 2) That the RTX 30-series experiences power spikes that can trip the protections on PSUs and cause it to shut off when it hits close to or above the power supply's limit. 3) That SLI doesn't do anything anymore. 4) That the 1% and .1% lows in FPS averages represent lag spikes and frame drops. Wow, great video.
@Erenzilable4 жыл бұрын
PSU efficiency is how much power from the wall gets delivered into components, say your efficiency is exactly 80%. So if your the sum of your PC parts requires 1000W, then your draw from the wall will be 1200W. It's a bit more complicated than that, but that's the gist of it. Still, all good points.

To put this in perspective, most electric heaters over here (in UK) have three settings, fan only (if applicable), 1500W-2000W high setting to warm the room up from cold, and 700-1000W to keep the room warm (which will generally cut in and out as it goes above and below whatever you set as max temperature). 10 years is a REALLY long time in the world of PC hardware though. Just think of what an absolute top end multi GPU solution from 10 years ago compared to even a single low end GPU from today would be like and I think you'd be surprised. In 10 years time matching this 3090 sli for a low amount of money would be easy (though I realise Linus might have just said 10 years for exaggeration) Even if he said 5 years and meant in relation to mid range I'd still be kind of skeptical, mostly because tech looks to recently be starting to move faster than it did in the last 10 years, especially with real time Ray tracing for gaming still being in it's infancy.

@mydogbuddy074 жыл бұрын
@@Tc4ify Yeah, but I'm not talking about theoretical performance or even production performance like blender where scaling is usually very good. I'm talking about from around average good sli performance to best case sli performance (and even then, it's being generous to the sli system) I haven't looked up any benchmarks for this, but my guess would be that testing that quad 580 system in a few Sli titles that were out at the time (using older games, to be generous to the older system, since newer games would likely suffer due to drivers and stuff) I think even then, a recent mid range GPU would likely win, since it would be significantly faster than a single 580 and even the best sli scaling gets progressively worse going to 3 and 4 GPUS. Though I think the 3090 sli will fair even worse in the future compared to the quad 580 system, as the scaling and support here is pretty aweful, and the 3090 is not an impressive leap forward compared to previous years, though it's hard to say how much more impressive future GPUS will be, could be pretty significant though if MCM GPU are coming in the not too distant future 🤔

I need 6x 8 pin PCI Express connectors for my now a bit dated 2 Radeon Pro Duo cards. That's 4 GPUs. And where software actually is able to exploit them, they still deliver very decent performance. CyberPunk 2077 runs in 4K on only 1 GPU with most settings at minimum, as they don't support multiple GPUs, and while it's not very fast (around 30 FPS), it does work, so those were fairly decent GPUs. If they supported mutiple GPUs, the performance would be quite spectacular on my system. Given the graphics card shortage - which will probably last for a long time to come - I'd say game developers would be well advised to support multiple GPUs again. It would greatly increase the number of people who could enjoy their games.
