It happens to idols all the time. Plenty idols have to officially change their names after leaving companies. Which is why people shouldn't use birth names when idols have stage names as the company can then trademark those birth names.

It's because it technically isn't her birth name, her birth name is Ruan not specifically RUANN (all caps, and double n). It's likely she could restart as Oyama Ruan or just Ruan since RUANN is the only one copyrighted. Sidenote, copyright is really tricky, ie Hayley Paige v JLM Couture (that's an example where someone's actual real first and middle name is copyrighted)

umm...well that's excessive. Only RUANN is trademarked lol and it makes sense if the COMPANY paid money and spent time and effort on hiring a management and PR team for her to think about how to market her, her image, her songs, AND HER NAME. She can easily go by her birth name...which is actually Ruan...not RUANN...and go by Oyama Ruan as well. Let's not get all crazed and start bashing the company by deeming them as some evil entity simply because they did their due diligence to protect THEIR trademark property. Instead of jumping to such crazy claims, why not research the concepts of copyright and trademark and how they pertain to companies...✌🏻✌🏻✌🏻

Some context is that when ruann debuted, Korea had just taken Japan off its trusted traders list or some other similar international feud. This was theorised to be why she didnt promote on music shows; either because it was hard for bside and spotlight to communicate, or they thought it would be a bad time to put a japanese person on music shows

Thanks so much for this video, i found her after Beep Beep and only recently wanted to find out where she went. Its so awful how she's so young and worked her ENTIRE childhood/teen life for an actually impressive career, only for it to be completely destroyed by a companies snap of a finger. This amount of power companies have over an artist should be illegal and i really hope this doesn't kill her passion for music.

Beep Beep is a song that popped up in my recommended in 2019 and I loved it. I was amazed for that to have been her debut song, at least in Korea. But it is still one of my favorite songs of all time (not just K-pop).

RUANN UPDATE 2022: The Japanese Trademark Office has given Bside Co the rights to use "Ruann" on many music related items, such as posters and photobooks. They also have the rights so Ruann can't relaunch any accounts under Ruann anymore, as of 4-12-2022.

The other label is CDL (subsidiary of LDH, one of Japan's largest ent. companies. They manage the EXILE TRIBE boy groups and girl groups Happiness, Girls2, and iScream). CDL was founded by OMI/Hiroomi Tosaka, member of Sandaime J Soul Brothers. HYBE Japan will be handling the global promotions, but technically, the final girl group will be under LDH/CDL.

Oh God, your video is super insightful, I cant imagine how much research you've done for this, thank you so much. Yk, I've been into kpop since 2010s and I've seen so many artists dissapearing without any news and this case is just makes me really mad. I always hope the best for her, and I hope she really got into LDH. Even though they're as ambitious as the other kpop companies, I think LDH overall gave a lot more freedom to the artist, not to mention the company name alone can get her to many places in Japan.

Agreed. LDH's artists under them (EXILE TRIBE groups, Crystal Kay, m-flo, etc.) have a lot more creative freedom. They write, compose, produce their own music, create their own choreos, and even direct their own MVs and live concerts too. RUANN would definitely fit in LDH and I hope she makes it in the upcoming group iN DREAMER Z🙏 Actually though, if she makes it in that new girl group, she'll be under CDL Ent. (OMI/Tosaka Hiroomi's new company), but in a way she'll still be under LDH, since OMI is still a member of 3JSB... crazy😅

She's currently in a Japanese survival show iCONZ (joint project between LDH (Japanese company and HYBE), actually. The boys version just ended, now the girls version will air in June. Ruan is in a subgroup called Queen during the competition. If her group wins, she'll be signed under LDH (through a subsidiary CL Entertainment) and be part of a J-Pop global girl group (HYBE will be handling the global promos). So I guess her Korean/KPop run is over and she's back home.

Ruann was literally a child. Shouldn’t there be laws made to protect children who are entering the entertainment industry? She claimed that it was made without her knowledge which is insane. Companies shouldn’t have the right to own someone- especially a child who isn’t educated on how contracts work (or remotely anything in this field). I don’t think children should be given contracts. They don’t read them and if they do- there are PLENTY hidden things/term words that most people have no idea of what it means. They should be given lawyers and additional help to go over it before signing.

If she made her own music before, why deleting her socials? She wasnt famous before in her debut, and SoundCloud was her solo career. It doesn't make sense to delete her soundcloud, especially since she can make her name there. You can delete socials, not fan cafes. You can delete her youtube channel, but not the things she made. Promoting her as a artist under the songs your label owns doesnt mean deleting her entire work that they didn't parcipate in. She should keep her artist name. I dont know what else they will use that for, for a group? For a new trainee? Who is that? Why keeping her fandom name? For RUANN? Who or what that'll be? They can jsut let her go, but this seems like another tactic for companies to not allow former trainees or idols even have their own deserved solo careers. It is shitty and weird as hell.

If she can't use RUANN as her stage name anymore, can she just go by her true first name, Ruan? Her former company can't possibly trademark her name, right? Because everybody here is saying oh how sad her name was trademarked, but her name is not Ruann, it is Ruan... so could she not just call herself... Ruan? Maybe when she returns for a redebut, so fans will know her.

Hmmm...idk but something feels a bit off with this story and everyone simply bashing the company right away. Now I'm not one to defend any companies that are mistreating their artists, for example CUBE (I can't stand them and how they've treated multiple artists), however, I also choose to remain objective in these matters instead of allowing emotions to taint my logic. Her company hired some of the biggest names in the industry to work on her debut song...that takes a whole lot of money. They hired BEP to produce and create this amazing song for her, they recorded a MV..which btw, requires them to pay for the videographers, equipment, rented space, set design, make up artists, hair stylists, costumes, dancers, choreographer, and catering for everyone as well as everything else I might have missed. That is a whole lot of time, effort, and MONEY to be spending on someone that they could care less about and an artist that they felt so much alleged animosity toward that they were going to somehow sabotage in the future. No company is going to go through ALL OF THAT and then not try their hardest to actually release and promote the single because ...promotions lead to sales and sales lead to..MONEY. Something must have occurred for promotions to have been stopped...someone mentioned that some trading laws between Korea and Japan were affected at the time so perhaps it was that..they thought selling the album would cause issues? I'm not sure. What I think occurred and what was said in the statement that was released was that there were some differences between management and the ARTIST and they were forced to go their separate ways. That includes TWO parties, not just one. Her Japanese company also released a statement expressing their hurt over being dismissed by her. She could have also...simply...tried to sign with another company under her birth name btw....her company only trademarked RUANN. They did not trademark her BIRTHNAME...which is Ruan. They trademarked what the company spent time and money on, which was marketing her and her name and coming up with RUANN. She can easily go by Oyama Ruan, her birth name. Something seems to be off here that everyone that has worked with her has had these abrupt issues and removals. Perhaps it really wasn't her fault whatsoever but we need to consider this possibility as well. It is not always the company, guys. I really hope I'm wrong here actually lol I'd rather be tbh and I hope she's actually with another company or retired of her own volition..although there's usually announcements if a past idol signs with a new company so I'm not sure. Idk I just wanted to present this to you all for consideration so that we can all be objective in these matters and consider ALL the possibilities instead of immediately resorting to bashing companies.

Thank you very much for the feedback! We do see your point, there are a lot of factors that went down behind the scenes that we can not speak about as we simply don't know about them. But here are some facts that led us to our conclusion: 1. The company trademarked "RUAN" AFTER she left the company / the contract was terminated. This was simply to prevent her from using it in the future. 2. RUANN did use the stylized version "RUAN" way before debuting with "BEEP BEEP" - even in her previous japanese companies. Spotlight Ent. and BSIDE Inc did not invent the name, they simply released her music under that name. 3. RUANN has not signed with any other agency since 2020. She's been away from the publics eye since the trademark issues forced her to delete all her content. She only reappeared recently on the japanese survival show "ICON Z"- as an individual contestant, NOT representing any company. While we agree that both parties must've been involved in the abrupt cancellation of the contract, our main issue lies within the trademark registration of her artist name after her departure that she has used before joining the company. She’s going to be with the under Omi’s label , CDL Entertainment ( sub label of LDH) , HYBE Japan is only helping with International promotion ( giving the group a weverse, ect.)
