It's hell from our pov. For James,this is Heaven. He knows he's trapped forever as he remains silence for a moment but he at least is with Mary. In all other endings sans Leave and Dog,James's ass ends in Hell. It's basically Maria Ending+ ala Silent Hill 1 with the regular Bad Ending and the Bad Ending+. Rather than moving on with his life as Mary wished, James becomes so obsessed of reliving his past life with Mary that he's willing to trap himself inside a loop for eternity.

More that a personal hell,is the closest thing to the Heaven James can be as outside of Leave Ending,James's journey ends badly. Either by he commiting Suicide,Going into another Neverending loop with Maria or Trying to revive Mary but instead possibly bring the Evil God back,rendering all the effort Alessa did to prevent his birth and Harry's victory pointless. Outside of this and Leave Ending,James's ass ends in Hell.

The Rebirth Ending is ultimately ambiguous as to its outcome, with the only meaning behind it being James's obsession to be with Mary leading him to conduct dark rituals in a desperate attempt to bring his wife back from the dead.

This ending was incredible. There's a reoccurring theme in the SH series that people get trapped in their own personal hell via Silent Hill by watching a static TV, at first I believed James had somehow found a way to relive his happy moments on loop forever, but it may be even darker. it might be that he's stuck in groundhog day, traveling back in time to the VHS moment and then coming back to SH again and reliving all the events of the game on loop forever. Always ending up on that seat watching the TV, which might be just playing static. This is way darker than I initially thought. Actually disturbing.

It isn't a eternal loop, since Mary doesn't cough in this version of the video. This implies James is on a "bliss" world where Mary won't be sick. It's still a dark ending, because James continue to be trapped on his denial and delusion.

If you had to continually go through the grief and horror to return to the joy, even in a loop, at least it’s balanced. The pain of losing someone, only to end up reuniting with them every time, could be worth it. But you could be right that it’s a dark ending, because the healthiest path is to be able to let go and move past the pain instead of experiencing it over and over again. But I know some people would understandably do that if it meant seeing someone again. That’s the best part of this new ending: some people would prefer this fate, and some really wouldn’t.

Another idea is that it’s some kind of alternate timeline where Mary never got sick and that’s just the tape that they left at the hotel on accident. I find it a little hard to believe that James magically goes inside the vhs tape blues clues style but it’s silent hill and more crazy things have happened in it. To be fair, you could argue that Mary’s voice sounds muffled like it’s coming through a TV speaker while James sounds perfectly clear.

It's like he used the power of the town to escape the loops and enter into an alternate reality where Mary never got sick and they ended their vacation in Silent Hill, went about their lives together, returned on occasion etc. Notice she never coughed in this version of the tape.

Since there are ppl asking in the comments. to get this ending, its only achievable on NG+, once you get to the hospital and you have to find a bottle of medicine called White Claudia and hold onto it for the rest of the game. Once at the hotel room where you play the tape, walk into the room, drink the WC, then play the tape and the ending automatically triggers.

To me, this is not a happy ending. James was so close to know the truth, but deep inside he was so scared of relieving the memories, and in so much pain from losing Mary, that he inserted himself into the tape right before her cough. James chose the comfort of an ilusion instead of the harsh reality he needed to face. Like being too scared of pulling off the bandages of his wound, letting it be and not moving on whatsoever.

I feel like James finally broke free of the ♾️ guilt that bides his fate, with that of Silent Hill. He didn't transfer his consciousness into the tape 📼. The whole game is about memories, the save states are access to James memory. Thats why he stares into space, Maria comments on it. So does Mary when he does the same pause looking at the camera. He was able to find his way back to the moment inside himself & become present with Mary. Also the fact that he now carries the flashlight 🔦 is an indication that he went throuh everything that happened. Mary also doesnt cough 😷 in this ending. Basically he escapes, because Mary never dies. That's my take anyway. Anything to numb the pain 😭

He can choose not to kill her so it's a kinda better outcome but regardless, the fact that James just can't overcome his grief over Mary is just too depressing, yet soo tragically beautiful, but in the end the fact that mary's body is in the car's luggage nullifies any endings's attemps at being happier or better, it only gives a sense of false beauty because it is still dark and messed up. In water ending is just right and makes the game perfect but i guess is too painful if you relate or connect emotionally with the character and story but that's what makes it meaningful, because it is fiction yet you DO have the power to make the choice james can't by overcoming grief and move on, proving there is truly another way.

This reminds me of a Twilight Zone episode I watched recently. For those who want to see it it’s episode 4 of season 1 “The 16MM-Shrine” - I’ll summarize it below but I’ll spoiler in case you want to see it fresh. SPOILERS - - - An aging starlet spends day watching her old movies obsessing over her time in the spotlight. She’s reclusive though…held up in that room. Scares the maid, especially when she starts seeing the CURRENT starlet appearing on the screen. Her agent friend comes by and says she’s got an offer - she’s extremely excited about the prospect of being in the spotlight again but it’s for the secondary role of a mother character. It offends her, she storms off…locks herself away with her movies where she was the leading gal. As a last ditch effort the agent friend brings one of her old co-stars to see her and this excites her again - until she sees how he’s become. He’s now quite old and runs shopping centers…she snaps inside…starts to disassociate with life to such an immense degree. She refuses to believe that old man she saw was the hunky co-star she used to know. She locks herself away again…and the next time she watches her movies she’s losing it…talking to the actors on screen (I believe she was before too)…she she wishes so badly to be there with the man she knew and everyone else. It happens…she wishes it and she actually becomes part of the film. Agent and the maid come in and now The film shows her house now. Except it’s full of actors in their prime and her as she is with them…she has somehow crossed into a VHS world.

This ending is really incredible, lot to take away from it, lot to theorize on. I see most people interpreting it as James getting inside the VHS, which is a pretty neat take since, Silent Hill does have powers of a curse practiced by a Cult (for people who know about SH1) so, as a curse that feeds over souls by tormenting them in SH, the town perhaps allowed James to be in the VHS in exchange for his soul completely since James doesn't care anymore since he's back with Mary, even if a VHS. "Everything is fine" he says. Then again, the ending being called "Bliss" could be a nod to "Ignorance is Bliss". Remember that in NG+, to trigger this ending, James has to consume the White Claudia, a hallucinogenic drug before watching the tape. Due to the effects of the drug, the truth is never revealed to him in the video tape; Mary doesn't cough now, potentially hinting that his denial may have gone so far as to completely forget that Mary even died. Thus, being content with ignorance, James leaves. Or perhaps due to the drug, James doesn't even remember what brough him here, hence there being no reason for him to be in Room 3F, which is why we see the empty sofa. Everything is just an opinion so do take it lightly

To all ppl that belive that james got stuck in vhs: James is not. To get this ending you need to drink potion from white flowers( Dk what it is called) Before watching the tape. but this potion was used by some cult, and was even given to tourists, but most importantly this potion is HALLUCINOGENIC. What we see trough most of gameplay james's mind wanted him to repress his counciusness of killing mary. And when you add to this hallucinations. While watching the tape james got halucinations that mary wasnt sick and he didnt kill her. As he said on the tape "everything is fine". That made him completly repress killing mary. He was convinced by that. So he just left the room. Possibly even leaving silent hill. We see that the room havent changed like we see when james realizes that he killer mary.

It actually makes Lore sense as to why this happens. in the original SH, you can find notes that tell you the town folks all went crazy and became addicted to a drug called PTV, and White Claudia was one of the main ingredients.
