This is the ending where he accepts the monster he is. In the first ending he confesses that he killed her because he hated her and he wanted his life back. Here he left with the hot clone of his wife getting his miserable life back. In the other basic endings he either feels remorse, heals and leaves with Laura as a daughter or lets the remorse consume him and commits suic**** with his wife's corpse on the back seat driving in the lake.

Fun Fact: If you were to accept all UFO endings in the original trilogy as canonical then it makes sense to Silent Hill 4 which takes place outside silent hill due to it being destroyed in SH3 UFO ending.

James killed her for selfish reasons, just because he fought some monsters and remembered he killed her doesnt really mean he should be forgiven. I feel like it goes against all the themes and messages of the game. James doesnt deserve that nice of an ending and silent hill wouldnt let him off the hook so easily. The game is so heavily based around trying to make him kill himself that i feel the Leave ending comes off as a cheesy, poorly written happy-ish ending they'd tack on the end of a cheap horror movie. In water, rebirth, bliss, stillness and maria are far better imo

"Stillness" might be one of the most powerful endings for any game I've ever played. It fits James, it's intensely emotional, it makes perfect sense but also breaks your heart. You don't want this ending for him, but you didn't want that ending for him and Mary when they spiralled due to her debilitating illness. Silent Hill 2 is such a heart-wrenching masterpiece. In no way did I suspect it would be about learning to forgive yourself for growing to hate someone who became scared, alone, and incredibly finite. It wasn't her fault, but it wasn't his either. They suffered incredibly. And yet.. in the end Mary still looks at him with love in her eyes, because deep down he knows while he regrets how he feels, her love for him, even after all she did to push him away, shone through all the debris.

@AegisAuras I feel it's his interpretation of how Mary would feel about what he needs to do. She's, as far as facts depict, fully dead already in the back seat. His openness to trying, deep love for her, and his willingness to have gone to far to do what she wanted (survive and thrive) while failing, is what allows him to feel like she is there for him, forgives him, and will be waiting for him It's so tragic, and I feel it's all in his mind, but I feel it's also informed by him discovering more about how she felt, how he did too, while still not being able to live without her.

The 'Stillness' ending is hands down the best ending for Silent Hill 2 Remake. The scene is so well done, I was actually crying! The acting is amazing too. Bloober Team absolutely nailed this remake. Playing it brought back all the anxiety and emotion I felt when I was a teen. It's so rare to find games that make you feel this way. Great job ! :D

Money. look at both the launch week sales numbers, and say the 1 year marker sales numbers. these games do turn a profit. but no where near as big of one as a Call of Duty, or any (remotely successful) live service game. But they are not the MOST profitable. couple it with some of the random hate this games getting for the sin of even existing, and suddenly the fairly safe money printing press of a shallow repetative rehash looks WAY more appealing to investers.

I think the Stillness ending has alot going on underneath the surface if you look at it with the Loop theory in mind. Its very similar to the In Water ending for the first bit and it requires the In Water ending to have been achieved prior, but once Mary appears the tone shifts subtly and entirely. Notice first how the music picks up and changes as Mary is shown in the backseat. Up to this point its been somber, but its suddenly much more tense. Her eyes are hidden, her head is tilted downward, and she grins. She does not seem trustworthy. After she answers his question, James closes his eyes and takes a deep breath. When he opens them again he's looking at the letter in the passenger seat out of the corner of his eye. He looks suspicious. He turns slowly, cautiously. He looks at the letter, and turns back. Then, he looks at it again. It seems he's realized something. Then, off screen, it sounds like he sends the car into Toluca Lake without him inside it this time. If my understanding of the Loop theory is correct, the only way for James to potentially escape the town is to fully, truly, accept what he's done. He cannot find solace in anything, cannot rationalize it, cannot escape it. He did what he did and has to LIVE with it. In the Leave ending, even though he truthfully admits why he did it, he imagines a dead Mary forgiving him, and even excusing her own murder. In the In Water ending, James tries to escape by ending his own life. These are not the lessons Silent Hill is trying to teach him (or rather, its not the punishment it wants him to endure), and it keeps sending him back to the start. In Stillness, I think James has figured it out. He knows Mary is dead and that he's responsible, and that she will never be able to actually forgive him. He knows he cannot just simply run away from his grief. He realizes that the "Mary" speaking to him isn't actually Mary. The Toluca Lake postcard (an item required to get the ending) says its "a place you'll always return to," the Mary in the backseat says she's "always been waiting for him." He seems to reject both forgiveness (from Leave, and the "Mary" in the backseat) and escape (In Water), and chooses instead to live with everything he did. Why he has to send her body into the lake, I dont know. If he actually escape Silent hills grasp, I dont know. But this is how I make sense of all the odd details that scene presents.

I got the Maria ending so far. It’s funny that a cough was Mary’s initial symptom before her condition became acute. So I’m guessing that James will eventually lose another woman to the same illness. Still though I like this ending because James realizes that Mary isn’t coming back and he’s ready to move on. I myself lost my wife back in 2013. Part of me will always miss her and I’ll never love my current girlfriend the way I loved my wife but speaking from experience I can say that time heals wounds and while the grief never fully goes away it’s never impossible or too late to love again.

But the maria ending is by far one of the worst. It shows him discarding his wife. not moving on from the loss. and using maria as something to help him forget. plus, the part you point out with his clear disregard for her health by making light of her cough. I think the leave ending is probably the closest thing to a "good" ending we can get. Because it shows him coming face to face with his own self hate, and moving past it. Plus the whole elephant in the room that is Laura. "Leave" is the only ending where james has the presence of mind to go get her and take her out of that hellscape. he just leaves her there in every other ending. i cant consider any ending where he abandons that kid as a "good" ending. let alone a "best".

I don't think the town claims him in Stillness. Regardless of whether he takes his own life or not, in Stillness he finally communes with Mary's spirit and accepts that although he will move on, Mary will always be waiting for him in death. He doesn't give into his despair like in the In Water ending

I think leave is the best and most cannon ending. With in water it's like their relationship completely got destroyed over the final 3 years of Marys illness. She was begging the pain to stop, complaining that the doctors were just cashing in on her being stuck there and pushing James and everyone she loved away. She felt like a monster and apologized for it to James and want's him to live the rest of his life and be happy and wants him to remember her for who she was not who she became with the illness. With Leave you get to see this back and forth of like, I killed her... I'm a monster, but she was in pain and she wanted to die so It was a kindness.... but... it's not why I did it. I hated her, I wanted my life back, but now she's gone I miss her so much etc and it's this real like deep complex ride through their final moments together and he really finds peace with her and she forgives him. But with the In Water you don't see any of that 3 years of deterioration and you lose some of the depth to it. It kind of makes the killing very motiveless and weird. The stillness endings acting is excellent and really adds to the in water (especially since she is in the back of the car...) but for me the leave ending gives the most complete end to all the character arcs. That or the dog ending. That REALLY ties up all the lose ends to be fair

This is the scariest game I have ever played since Resident Evil 7. Not only scary but it also has great endings which gave me goosebumps and almost made me cry. I can surely that this is the best game of the year !

@HoldenHeath The pyramid heads killing themselves can be open to interpretation to suit each ending. It doesn't necessarily have to be about him forgiving himself. Leave: Like you said, James doesn't need the pyramid heads anymore because he is ready to seek redemption rather than punishment. In Water: James no longer needs figments of his imagination to punish him. Now that he knows the truth he can do it himself now. Maria: James gets rid of the pyramid heads because he doesn't feel guilty anymore. He's going to move on from Mary and be with Maria.

Leave feels the most appropriate because it felt like Silent Hill is a place that tries to rehabilitate all these disturbed people moreso than punish. Mary's final conversation and letter plus Laura feels like enough for James to forgive himself and a reason to keep going.

I like the original much more when Mary narrates her letter. When she says , “James… you made me happy”. Her voice was cracking as if she was breaking down crying when she said it. It sounded more heartfelt . The way Mary reads her letter in this one did not sound as gut wrenching and sounded more straight forward.

I love that in the leave ending James says that he hated Mary, but she challenges thought. In Maria ending it’s Mary who says that he hated her and it’s James that tries to deny it.

the stillness audio and the in water audio are different. In Water sounds like it's in the car- you don't hear the door open, the engine and crash are mixed louder, the creaking at the end is louder and it sounds like it's underwater. In stillness, it sounds distant, and the rain stays constant after the door opens, and we hear the car sinking but it sounds like it's from above. Maybe James lives in the stillness ending. Or at least, we don't hear it from inside the car.
