I make slow-flyer foam board rc planes ( Lazy Bee, etc...) as a hobby and I'm amazed at what you can do with a rubber powered foam board. That's quite a skill.

I know you've guested on Flite Test before. Did you chat with them about possibilities for more collaboration?

Magic fingers, Joshua. I doubt these are the first rubber powered foamboard airplanes, but they are likely among the best. The plan doesn't show the airfoil. My observations on the flights. 1. Not climbing, steep right bank, tight right turn. So many things involved here it is hard to say what to do, but I would start by looking at reducing right thrust. 2. Excellent climbing circle, opening out and transitioning into left descent. Figure 8 flight path is not good on a small field. I trim right descent circle first, as power trim does not interfere with glide, then trim power circle with side thrust. A shorter, thicker motor of the same weight is good to get the plane up high enough to freewheel for glide trim without dangerous climbs. The motor will be wound up part way, just enough to take the plane up about 50 feet, then goes into freewheel. You want enough time to stabilize the glide for judging, at least about 10 seconds, or a complete circle. Hand launched glide tests usually don't give enough time to stabilize the glide. 3. Too tight right turn and too much right bank under power, opening up into left circle. A steep bank implies a strong sideslip which is a downward motion. Hope you found the second plane. That P-30 is a bit long for the little guy. Makes it hard for him to hold the fuselage and prop at the same time, avoid getting hit on the head by the wingtip and get off a smooth launch. When the fuselage does not move straight forward, the launch is chancy. The family that plays together stays together. Free flight allows you to get out in the middle of a big field away from everybody else and have some fun.

You can crush the DT foam board to make tapered trailing edges. It takes quite a bit of force. It will spring back very little. I crush it between two pieces of hardwood using a bunch of c clamps, and a spacer to limit the angle. Leave it clamped for a minute or two. You can also round the leading edge by burnishing it over with a sealing iron. Then a strip of celluloid tape. Together you can get a passable airfoil from a single layer of the foam board.
@joshuawfinn4 жыл бұрын
I actually ironed all the edges. Got a decent trailing edge taper with the iron as I've done on several previous models. Clamping is an interesting idea and something I need to try when we get the new workshop operational.

While I like to believe "balsa flies better" you can't deny you've built a wonderful flying plane there. Would be right at home at any "old timer" meet.

There have been lots of people who built depron rubber powered aircraft (even scale models). Does that count?
@joshuawfinn4 жыл бұрын
Technically no. The goal here was to specifically demonstrate foamboard as the primary material on successful rubber models. I even used hot glue for the entire assembly including the nose block.

Sorta the first lol but you should try one of the foam chuck gliders rubber powered. The small ones can get quick and the big ones float effortlessly

Great video! Thanks for including the full size plans. I'd be interested in seeing how you built these, as I don't see any wing ribs in the plans. Also, what adhesive did you use?
@joshuawfinn2 жыл бұрын
Ed, eventually I'll do another one and video it. It's an extremely simple build, no ribs or anything. The camber is made by creasing the score lines on the bottom of the wing. I used hot glue for the entire build.

Nice - undercambered wing with stiffnes from the undercamber?

Correct. Nothing innovative there, Flite Test and others have been doing that for at least a decade.

@@joshuawfinn I built like that back 1991 ;). My first RC period. Foamboard was cheaper than expensive balsa kits. No flite test in those days. Only rC magazines.

Awesome build sir! After years of RC, I'm finally beginning to develop an interest in rubber band powered flight (for myself and for helping the younger generation). Could you please provide some directions on where I could find information and specs about what power setups are currently available?
@joshuawfinn3 жыл бұрын
I would highly recommend looking through the Technical Library at freeflight.org (consider joining NFFS for the bimonthly magazine and online access to back issues and all Symposia). Also find a copy of Don Ross's Rubber Powered Model Airplanes. Lastly, Building and Flying Indoor Model Airplanes by Rob Williams is a must-have for anyone getting into rubber power.

REMOVE the paper covering ! Only the Flite test Goofs leave it on.
@biko98244 жыл бұрын
‘Goofs’ is a little unfitting, paper gives it way more strength. Also, they take it off their flitetest foam when possible. Also, the paper is hard to get off the regular dollar tree foam.
