After years of working on very large lawns (over 1000m²), last year I finally invested in a powered scarifier. Best and worst decision ever. Lawn looks amazing, requires far less chemical treatment, and is much healthier plus easier to mow. However, it's the moss and thatch collection that's now the single worst job of the year. I've worked out that for every 1 hour of scarifying, it's about another 4-5 hours of collection by hand on a very mossy lawn. Even buying new wide-head lightweight rakes, it's still exhausting work. Whilst the scarifier I bought has a 40L collection box, it's virtually useless, as you need to stop every 10m strip to empty it. So by the time you've removed the box, emptied it, replaced it, and then pull-started again, it's actually less work to do collection with a rake. My preference is to cut first, scarify, collect, then a final going over with the mower to hoover up the chaff.

Dan, we all care about you. I think I noticed that when you strimmed you were not wearing eye protection. You wear ear defenders from the mower, but nothing for the strimmer. I have smashed 6 panes of glass in the past three years. I started wearing a visor after strimming an edge just like you and flicked a pebble into my face just below my eye. An inch higher and I would have been blinded. They cost £2 in Toolstation and a visor from B&Q is 8. Please invest in a set. You can still work deaf, but not blind. After all, you've only got one eye ;) Please take care, and that goes for everyone who watches. Strim at your peril.

Hi Daniel - always enjoy the content you put out. 2 questions: 1) When do you use Galactic Green - Ive got some but not sure when to apply it 2) I used some Rise and Shine granular feed in March and the results were excellent - I'm guessing the next feed should be with Equilibrium ? If so, how often should I apply this during the summer months ? Cheers
@DanielHibbertLawnExpert6 ай бұрын
1) its a hd car wax if you like so you put it on after your Equilibrium has kicked in to elevate the definition, its a waste just to use it without feeding first

So 2) equilibrium yes and all way through summer till autumn so prob every 6-8 weeks

Daniel. After some advice, I am in the process of refurbishing a Wolf Garten Petrol Scarifier. The problem that I have is the depth adjuster is not marked. The instructions tell you to set the blades touching the floor then one full turn down takes the blade down 1.5mm. Your machine has numbered settings how does this relate to depth of grooves left after Scarifying. I suppose the question is how deep should I scarify? Regards Peter
@DanielHibbertLawnExpert6 ай бұрын
No set rule whatever suits you dont think my numbers mean anything as the wheels are so worn when i put new blades on N is about right lol

Hi Dan, all your lawns looking great for so early in the season. Looking forward to a Britney greatest hits ensemble in a few weeks! Question, you previously kindly advised me a mower for my new large lawn and gone for the Allett Stirling. Actually order pending as can’t decide on 51 vs 43. Are there any disadvantages to the larger machine as not much more cost wise? Going for the verticut accessory but have you tried any of the other cartridges? Fancied the grooved front roller but didn’t know if this would make much difference to stripe definition. I’m a sucker for an upgrade so will, probably end up with the lot and never use them! Keep up the quality vids mate; a bulk order of product coming in soon!
@DanielHibbertLawnExpert6 ай бұрын
The groved front roller i dont like as pushes down grass that doesnt get cut so can be a bit straggly not sure why its invented to be honest, just use what i use then you get my results, the bigger machine will cut more but will weigh more should you need to lift it

Hi Dan, been watching your channel the past few months, currently in the middle of my first lawn renovation. Im about to seed in the next two weeks but I’m undecided and stuck on a spreader to use and what settings. Getting scared of a rotary one incase all the seed ends up in the borders and have grass growing amongst the plants, and I hear that drop spreaders are pretty poor in distribution. Any advice would be much appreciated or even a video on what and how you use. Cheers mate!

Hi Dan, any remedies for Amg. Last year did a total re make of the lawn but this year I’m riddled with the stuff. 200sqm of lawn is a bit too much to fork it out like you do for the bits you get in your lawns. I’ve seen other people recommend verticutting regularly clears it, any thoughts. Can’t go down the route of killing it off and starting again, mrs would kill me lol.
@DanielHibbertLawnExpert7 ай бұрын
Theres no cure really the more you verticut n scarify the more you disperse the seeds and encourage new side shoots from the verticutting its better sometimes to live with it rathervthan fight it
