Richard Harris lived in the Savoy Hotel in London. Having become very ill with his final illness and being taken to hospital on a stretcher the great man had the presence of mind to raise himself up as he was carried through the lobby of the hotel and exclaim to shocked guests "It Was The Food! . @@glenfordburrell1076 - I’m rather intolerant of alcoholics and found your comment a little too comforting. I had thought you felt as I do! I do not like alcoholics (in general) but there is something about a proud drunk that I find intolerable. The kind of drunk who wakes up on their front lawn having never quite made it to their front door after driving home. Harris once famously boarded a train solely to take advantage if its bar and ended up in Leeds at 3:00 in the morning. So, of course, when he stumbled onto a house, he did the only sensible thing: He threw a brick through the front window. The startled owner came out with a baseball bat ready to kill the offender. However, once recognizing Harris…invited him in. Harris made himself at home for 4 days having been drunk the entire time. When this man’s wife finally called Harris’s wife, she announced that she HAD her husband here at her house. Mrs. Harris responded “Good! You can have him!” This all explains the obvious. We tolerate this alcoholic because he’s famous. Had he been anyone else, do you think he’d be invited to stay for 4 days? Both you and this couple and nearly everyone in this room make the same mistake: They become enablers of a fantastically ugly man who got away with his stupidity ONLY because he was Richard Harris, the celebrity. Much like Donald Trump…you think you know him because you saw him on tv or on a movie screen! Neither of these men ever cared about anybody but themselves!

Sure we can, it’s just that there’s a bigger market for rap and other swill. The record companies only desire to turn profits so they put their money and efforts into what the majority are buying. Anyone today willing to find talent the likes of Richard Harris and Jimmy Webb can certainly put up their money and time to record, market and promote them for others to enjoy are certainly free to do so.

As a teen in the 60s, the first time I heard this song I knew it was a masterpiece. If young people today do not understand my affection for this piece I can understand. This song completely embodied the sixties, and to get it you had to be there. It was a song about lost love, but conveyed with a nonsense lyric that only made sense if you had dropped acid. And when you did, suddenly everything was crystal clear! 😊 Years later, Webb insisted he was playing it straight, that every image in the song, from the old men playing checkers near the trees to the rest of it, all were actually there in the afternoon when this song came to him. I accept that, but also understand this piece conveys so much more. I think this is so because it was written by a guy who saw life from the perspective of a child - in his ability to take in everything around him with great sensitivity and without precondition, and child-like in his inability to process love’s loss because every child expects to be loved without condition. That is the way to listen to this piece, as a child. Let its melody and lyric wash over you. Do not try to make sense of them, but instead let yourself be carried along until you realize that your loss of love has sharpened your senses to the point that for the first time you feel fully alive. This song about loss is also an anthem for those who are aware of life’s intoxicating beauty, and that being alive, in bad times and good, is its own reward. Ask for nothing more, because there is nothing more.

I lived in Ireland for 10 years and became friends with a Jesuit Priest named Fr Paddy Kelly who was Richard Harris's First Cousin. Fr. Paddy was 8 year older than Richard and they grew up a few houses. Whenever Harris was back in Limerick they would get together. Fr. Kelly told me Harris never said hello his greeting to him was the same, "Paddy are our ye praying for me, you're my only hope of getting into Heaven". Classic Richard Harris. :) Fr. Kelly lived to the age of 98 so I believe Richard Harris made it into Heaven
