Realistic dragon fly nymph tying instruction
rubenmartin.co...
The dragonfly nymph ( Odonata , Anisoptera) are very common in areas of standing water with aquatic vegetation and have an important role in the diet of trout in those places. They are very common , but not usually found in boxes of fishermen , often ignored or minimized. Insects are a good size , usually measured 2-4 cm . Because of its significant size , in my experience this nymph imitations require a higher level of realism that imitations of small organisms.
hook: TMC 5262 o TMC 5263
Thread: UTC 70 olive, black ( i used white for better details in the film)
Under Body: Monofilament same gross to the wire of the hook
back: Nylon film
Rib: clear monofilament o,20 o 0,23 mm
abdomen, thorax and head: mixed natural dubbing whit sintetic dubbing...HareTron is my favorit . Olive and brown dark tones are the best.
Legs: goose wing feather fibers, bleached and dyed. Opposing to the classical biots.
painting mottled whit RM realistic laquer
Eyes: monofilament 0.80 o 0.90 mm, burned
wing case and head top: nylon film.
NOTE: all nylon fil is painting with vitreaux laquer translucent olive or the color of your choice.

Instead of using those tubes to build up the sides of the body you could take lead wrap and rap it around that area and smash it down with pliers. That way you have added some weight and made a nice body 👍

That fly is for display. First fish that hits it will destroy it. It takes too long to tie, use too much material, and is too delicate. It is art work, not a pattern you will tie a couple of dozen to use on the next trip.

What fly did you use to imitate a dragon fly nimph?...we use it a lot here on Patagonia Argentina in lakes and slow water rivers, we have very selective trouts and when they sims not to strike with any fly we use imitations like this one and if the fly brake after one or two catch its ok because the fly made his purpose. If you spend more than 5000usd in fly fishing equipment (wader, boots, rods, reels, fly lines, hat, sunglasses, rain jacket, tools, etc) and you find that the fly that the fish will see to strike or not to is what matters least... well we are not seeing fly fishing the same way. Best regards

Yes, thats a point of view but... think in this... why someone ever took the time to tie the first ever fly and take the time to do it if he could put a worm or a live bait on a hook... if at that time there was no restriction about fishing with live bait... i think fly tying and fly fishing is not about time to do things is about to focus on making things and see things that you believe that would work better than the products that the market sells you to catch a fish, and thats the quest i think, and of course if you dont like to tie your own you buy the fly and if you dont want for any fly brake fast you fish with lures and if you dont like to fish with lures you can fish with live bait... so at the end is all about fishing the way you like

I made my own fly vise from a pair of forceps with a 3 inch screw soldered to one handle.... Screw it into a log in the bank.... Actually works better than any vise I have bought.... Bring a few tools and things and tie on the bank what ever it is they are eating... I use natural material found on the side of the creek..... Seem to catch way more this way.... I use bark grass weeds pine needles and always find exactly what I need to match the bugs there.... Never had to buy any of the expensive stuff that fishermen bite on in the shops.... Made all my own custom tools when I was a kid because I couldn't afford the fly shop stuff and these days it's easy worse the costs... Now I have a 450 dollar Powell fly shop carbon rod and custom self made reel.... Also have rods I made myself from bamboo or other stuff..... Expensive stuff does not catch more fish... The only thing I do buy that is important is mustad hooks and a nice sharpening stone..... And now that I'm old and need glasses a good magnetic hook threading tool..... My favorite fishing is fly fishing then cast net then bobber and beer lol

If you used brown raffia or other color of your choice as the top covering over the dubbed body, it could be even better. Also if you used 2 or 3 wraps of a partridge / grouse / ptarmigan body feather etc. and trimmed out the excess with sizzors it could be faster and easier for your legs. Excellent concepts and very good fly. I fish in Newfoundland for Brooke's and often find them full of dragon fly nymphs....this surely will catch them!
