I'm surprised that you don't use a clay shovel or drain spade when digging that impacted clay, water would probably help by loading a couple pails on a small cart

You need a cement mixer, a tub of water and a screen. Then you might be able to tell what’s under the clay.

I like the way you think 🤔. We can't use any mechanical machinery at the farm unfortunately with that being said I do like the idea of making a hand crank (cement mixer , rock tumbler) for my take home concentrates. Thank you for the comment. If you keep thinking outside the box and you will be rewarded. It takes a lot of friction and water to remove the clay or break up the clay clods to expose. The clay can look identical by the shape and sheen to a corundum crystal.

Corundum is florescent so a black light comes in pretty handy, even during the day with the exception of a very bright day.
@HighCountryRocks

Not all of it is though. It is absolutely beautiful though when it is. The reds and pink and purple are extremely florescent. The blue and grey and green and yellow are not florescent though.

Screening the dirt you dig. Half inch screens and lots of moving dirt. The over videos explain the size and quality. Mostly lapidary grade and specimen. Some days you get skunked and some days you can get a pound or two. It is hard work and takes alot of digging to get the high quality ones. It isn't easy by no means. Only hand tools are allowed and reservation is required.

It is extremely difficult to find the large ones. They don't get over 3lbs often.

@@HighCountryRocks I believe that I came across a large deposit on my farm in Vermont. Some of the stones are very large boulders. I didn't know what sapphire was until recently it seems I have a very large collection. The green crystals are my favorite. Are the valuable I wonder.

are the crystals worth anything? I found a big blue sapphire hex crystal in Indiana in creek gravels while gold panning.. One guy says it is worthless as its not clear, others say maybe $100.
@HighCountryRocks
@HighCountryRocks 2 жыл бұрын
It all depends on the shape, quality , and locality. It also depends.on what a person wants to pay and you feel happy giving it up for. They can star also which is the silk inside that makes them not clear. Every specimen is different and so is the price.

I have some 40 year old finds from western NC mountains of rubies in feldspar I think it is but they are encased anyway. 200 - 550 carats a piece. One is a rat tail that looks to be very different from other native specimens according to a museum there they have not seen one like it before. I also have Pressley Mine Sapphires in the raw in mica schist that together are about 330 carats between 3 rocks. One of those is rat tail that you see the gem material inside of at one end like a jelly roll and it's 40 grams alone. Not sure what they are worth but they come from a very old adn known professional miner who dug or found them himself and lived in Kings Mountain. One of the rubies I was told could contain very valuable gem quality material and could even be a star ruby for all we know but no one will help me to learn more or even to cut a window into the rubies. What do I do with them adn how do I know if they have any actual value. Seems people find these and do nothing with them. Why bother if they are not worth anything>? A rock is worthless to me if it can not be cut and polished, if thee is no gem quality material inside of it or if it is not a gem itself. And so much bulk red adn blue corundum is out there that just has zero value. How do I know what I have or what it is worth? I have good pics dn no one can tell me anything. They were all mined over 40 years ago and the miner had them in a box marked RARE so he should know they are special if so. He was a wealthy man and his family owned an Iron Mine so he had no desire to make issue of them, cut them or sell them. His family is wealthy adn just sold off his stuff after being in storage 30 years or more. They sold lots of his rare Earth minerals and all of his rocks, raw gems stones adn his faceted gems as well of which I bought 60 specimens or more of all different materials it was so cool. And I got a cheap good prove for most all of it. But I had no clue that it could not be evaluated adn that no one knows much about it all. Everyone seems clueless but they look for and collect the stuff. For what then>? Why if there is no use or value even bother? You would do much better to invest your time adn money in gold prospecting at least than you get something of real value when found that you can actually sell for a profit. I sure don't want worthless rocks and gems' that are not going to get me a dime. red and blue corundum when not of gem quality has no real value I was told and is very common so why the work to look for it if it's junk adn common worth nothing?

@@GERENDAZEE People collect corundum like any other gem and mineral. (Value based on the quantity not by the ct. Unless it is gem quality and cut.) Specimens range how you value them personally. If what you described in the comments I would definitely be interested. I collect corundum and know alot more people that do also. Email me.
