Located along the Tennessee River Gorge just south of downtown Chattanooga, Ruby Falls is one of Lookout Mountain's most popular attractions - and it was discovered completely by accident. In 1905, railroad construction forced the closure of the Lookout Mountain Cave, making it inaccessible to the public. More than 20 years later, local cave explorer Leo Lambert sought to reverse this and gathered a team of excavators to help build an elevator from the surface that would lower visitors into the cave. One day, a team member drilled into an 18-inch opening that led to a new cave, where Ruby Falls now stands.
Located 1,120 feet below the surface of the mountain, Ruby Falls is America's largest underground waterfall. Carrying out Lambert's vision, visitors can take an elevator down to the falls and learn about the various rock formations located along the path to the falls. The attraction also boasts a lookout tower and a zip lining adventure. There are a variety of holiday events and seasonal tours, including the Lantern Tour, where guests are guided through the mountain caverns only by lantern.
Recent visitors found the falls stunning and the formations in the cave cool, with many appreciating the fun atmosphere the guides helped create. However, one notable complaint among travelers was that the tour groups are too big for such a small space; some left feeling a bit claustrophobic. Others advised using the restroom beforehand, as the tour can last more than an hour and there are no facilities within the cave. Despite this, many said the tour was a great experience and recommend it to other travelers.
Ruby Falls is open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. year-round. Tickets cost $22.95 for adults and $12.95 for children ages 3 to 12. Know that you must take a guided tour to enjoy the falls; you'll select a specific time when you book. Specialty tours have their own fees and schedules. Buses don't stop at Ruby Falls, but parking is free to visitors.

Me and my family just went there the other day and it was awesome but when we got in the elevator to go down my red headed 4 year old son got nervous and asked if we're going to hell, lol, the whole elevator busted out laughing and broke the silence. It made the trip that much more fun

I went to Ruby Falls as a young child in the 70's. When I went and you got to the falls they would have everyone gather around the rail and then shut the lights off and scare the crap out of everyone. And I agree with Phillip Matlock, the place has changed A LOT. I for one am not thrilled to see all the electronics bolted into such a natural wonder. Sad really.

I went as young child in the 80s and I remember that colored lights and music were a part of the experience. Looked about like this video. So the change happened sometime between the late 70s and early to mid 80s.

Went here in the 8th grade on a 3-4 day field trip and went to the aquarium and rode a ferry ⛴️ down the Chattanooga River it was amazing and breathe taking. I'm planning on going back this summer to relieve the memory and to bring my family along as well they'll love it

My parents visited this cave on their honeymoon 36 years ago. 13 years ago, my wife and I visited here too for our honeymoon, it was breathtaking. They said that researchers have never pinpointed the actual source of the falls. They released dye in every watch source they could find and none of it found its way into the falls.

My family and I went there in 1972, it was so beautiful, I was about 12 yrs.old and they had the multi colored lights on the cave rock cyclels and the lights on the waterfalls and it was so cool and comfortable, like in the low 50 to 60's and the glass bottom bats. I wish I could bring my child back there now.

I wish our local township would make something like this! Since we get weekly “water boil emails” from the city, it’s probably safer to just pipe it up and make a “waterfall” and promote tourism.

So two questions: 1) is getting to and from the falls a pretty easy walk, one that a 4 year old could safely navigate with adult help? 2) Is the path to the falls narrow? I mean my claustrophobia was slightly triggered watching this otherwise beautiful video. 😀
@Wonderliv
@Wonderliv 3 жыл бұрын
The falls are quite far from Chattanooga, is best to go by car. Some parts of the path are quite narrow, but you’ll feel safe as the tour guides are great.
