Don't underestimate good vs evil stories, all genres have potential it all depends of the skill of the ones working in the film, and not just writing, direction, art, etc all is important, please dont devalue other stories with similar concepts just because this movie didn't pull it off. Honestly, I always thought the move would be better if Chelsea was telling the truth about her mother being killed, and she wanted the trident to take revenge on Ruby's family, especially if, while she initially just befriended Ruby to use her, she ended up coming to actually like her as a friend.

@@NicolasMHarrison Honestly, I can't help but wonder if the reason the plot was changed was simply because Dreamworks learned that the Little Mermaid was getting a remake, and made Chelsea a one note "evil mermaid" just to mock Disney. It was kind of obvious that Chelsea was designed to parody Ariel, but I was hoping she would be more than just "huh huh, evil Ariel, take that Disney".

I like the bits where you see Chelsea still being a bad person like throwing trash into the ocean or stealing a bike. Even if this draft still had Chelsea revealing she was just manipulating Ruby the whole way, a scene like this is still much better than the training montage we got that was just showing off what powers Ruby had. This even had her neck-blowhole being brought up which could be a better way of building up her Kraken abilities. I dont think Ruby Gillman was a bad movie, but a scene like this would've helped it a bit more than whatever the bonding montage they had in the movie was (I cant even remember it)

The vibes in this are immaculate, the song choice is perfect, all of the gags land flawlessly (for some reason Ruby and Chelsea both being absolutely AMAZED that Chelsea's name has "Sea" in it killed me lmao), and the art style is adorable and has so much personality. I liked the movie well enough as is, but this is such a great scene, and like others have said, I wish the version of Chelsea shown in this storyboard (maybe a bit of a toxic friend, but one who truly likes hanging out with Ruby and one who you'd genuinely like to see redeemed) was the one we got in the finished film.

@@XJ9LoL Nah. The movie by itself has several issues. No matter what time it would've been released, that won't change the fact the writing have fundamental issues. Several of these issues were easy to fix: just don't make Narissa and Chelsea the same character. Making Chelsea and Narissa the same just undoes any significant weight in her friendship with Ruby (reducing their conflict to just good Vs. bad), opens up many plotholes the audience now have to just accept, and worst of all, validates Grandmamah's obvious mermaid racism by painting an already eradicated minority as an inherently evil group. Yikes.

Let me elaborate; what if Chelsea actually WAS Nerissa's daughter? Going off of this storyboard, maybe Nerissa would order Chelsea to get close to Ruby to get the Trident, but then she finds herself genuinely befriending Ruby and finds herself conflicted, culminating in a heroic sacrifice to help Ruby stop Nerissa. Then again, one could easily make the argument that this would be as predictable as the plot in the actual movie, but I have no way of knowing for sure. Still, I enjoy the movie for what it is; it's just fun to speculate what could have been.

2:05 uh, cephalopods don't normally have blowholes, those are common on Cetacea which includes whales dolphins and porpoises which are mammals, that's a mantle cavity which is common in cephalopods, including Octopus, Squid, Cuttlefish And Nautilus which are Mollusca.

I said this before on other reviews and you know what I’m going to say it again Here is an alternate change that I think would have made the movie more interesting and better executed Have Chelsea and the Mermaid Queen Nerissa be separate characters and actually have them be mother and daughter With the mother being the true antagonist who faked her death during the war planning her revenge and pressures and manipulates Chelsea into following her orders and sees her as a tool to regain the trident that she would discard if she either loses her usefulness or defies her Chelsea’s arc would have her manipulate Ruby at first by pretending to be her friend in order to get the trident only to actually start liking Ruby and have second thoughts about her mission She attempts to tell Ruby the truth multiple times but stops at the last minute Agatha tries to end their friendship accusing Chelsea of using Ruby for her own gain only for Ruby to defend her causing Chelsea to feel guilty After Ruby gets the trident a guilt ridden Chelsea attempts to tell her the truth only for her mother Nerissa to appear attacks Ruby and claims the trident for herself and reveals the truth to Ruby That she had Chelsea search for Agatha’s family and infiltrate Oceanside to gain Ruby’s trust and manipulate her into getting them the trident Chelsea tries to explain only for Ruby to be consumed by anger and grief over being lied and manipulated by someone she thought was her friend cutting her off and refusing to listen Nerissa attacks Ruby leaving her for dead trapped under rubble and heads off to begin her rampage on Oceanside and vengeance on Agatha Chelsea finally has enough and stands up to her mother trying to stop her which doesn’t work out Ruby and Chelsea talk and Chelsea tells Ruby the whole truth and admits that she genuinely liked being her friend and how she was envious of how Ruby was lucky to have friends and family that love her for who she is while she never really had real friends and was stuck with a mom that only valued how useful she was Ruby however tells Chelsea that if it wasn’t for her she wouldn’t have gotten out of her comfort zone and learn more about herself and chose a different path than what her mother and grandmother wanted They reconcile and they return to Oceanside to stop Queen Nerissa from destroying Oceanside and starting another war During the final battle Ruby, Chelsea, along with with Agatha and Ruby’s Grandma manage to stop Nerissa by destroying the Trident and imprisoning Nerissa Upon witnessing Chelsea Agatha and the grandma can see that not all Mermaids are evil and that they can end the blood feud without wiping each other out With Chelsea becoming part of Ruby’s friend group and family

I guess I should start with the characters I added. First is Myrin who is a shark shifter and can control her form depending oh how much she gets wet, she can also skateboard and was the first out of the characters who met ruby. There are more but I can explain them later once I have time.

The next character is someone I call “the real Chelsea”. Where merisa (I can’t spell the name) DID have a daughter but locked her in a dungeon and never let her out until Fake Chelsea disguised herself as Chelsea and went to the surface. Myrin is dating the real Chelsea and could tell the difference between her mother and her. Also the real Chelsea cut her hair to be shorter so others like ruby can tell the difference. In the final battle Chelsea actually stabs her mother and takes her to Gordon to capture. I also made changes to the final battle between ruby and merisa, so I’m going to make it a different battle between ruby and the real Chelsea where Chelsea thinks ruby is going to betray her after Myrin broke up with her. I will make it short, so what happens was that, Chelsea got hold of a new trident and was going to hurt ruby, it kind of backfired on her when Myrin turned into her shark form and bit Chelsea and other kraken helped Myrin by holding Chelsea down while ruby got the trident and stabbed Chelsea in the heart with it and felt horrible for doing it, before another species that can transform (jelly fish) electrocuted ruby and Chelsea making both their hearts stop. But a friend of Chelsea (a jelly fish) manages to reverse the electric shock and knocked himself out but now ruby and Chelsea are alive and got transported to a family friend of myrin's (someone she lives with. They where a nurse) and got them healed and they both have scars from it but are doing better. There is a lot I have to explain but not today.

Maybe humans were right about fearing the Kraken. The fact even her children called her out for it says a lot about Ruby's grandma. But no. The movie makes crystal clear Grandmamah is in the right at the end, and it's frustrating, frustrating as watching pro nazi propaganda (not saying this is that, but it's dangerously close).
