This summer, DreamWorks Animation dives into the turbulent waters of high school with a hilarious, heartfelt action comedy about a shy teenager who discovers that she’s part of a legendary royal lineage of mythical sea krakens and that her destiny, in the depths of the oceans, is bigger than she ever dreamed.
Sweet, awkward 16-year-old Ruby Gillman (Lana Condor, To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before franchise) is desperate to fit in at Oceanside High, but she mostly just feels invisible. She’s math-tutoring her skater-boy crush (Jaboukie Young-White, Ralph Breaks the Internet), who only seems to admire her for her fractals, and she’s prevented from hanging out with the cool kids at the beach because her over-protective supermom (Oscar® nominee Toni Collette, Knives Out), has forbade Ruby from ever getting in the water.
But when she breaks her mom’s #1 rule, Ruby will discover that she is a direct descendant of the warrior Kraken queens and is destined to inherit the throne from her commanding grandmother (Academy Award® winner Jane Fonda), the Warrior Queen of the Seven Seas.
The Kraken are sworn to protect the oceans of the world against the vain, power-hungry mermaids who have been battling with the Kraken for eons. There’s one major, and immediate, problem with that: The school’s beautiful, popular new girl, Chelsea (Emmy winner Annie Murphy, Schitt’s Creek) just happens to be a mermaid. Ruby will ultimately need to embrace who she is and go big to protect those she loves most.
Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken stars an extraordinary cast that includes Emmy winner Colman Domingo (Fear the Walking Dead) as Ruby’s supportive dad, Emmy nominee Sam Richardson (Veep) as Ruby’s enthusiastic uncle and Blue Chapman (Council of Dads) as Ruby’s cool little brother.
Directed by Academy Award®-nominated filmmaker Kirk DeMicco (Vivo, The Croods) and produced by Kelly Cooney Cilella, p.g.a. (Trolls World Tour, Trolls), with Faryn Pearl (The Croods: A New Age, Trolls World Tour) serving as co-director, the film features a comedic powerhouse supporting cast, including Emmy nominee Will Forte (The Last Man on Earth), Emmy nominee Nicole Byer (Nailed It!), Liza Koshy (Transformers: Rise of the Beasts; Work It), Ramona Young (Never Have I Ever), Eduardo Franco (Stranger Things), Echo Kellum (Arrow), and award-winning social media creator and podcaster Emma Chamberlain (Anything Goes podcast).
The film is written by Emmy winning South Park producer Pam Brady (Lady Dynamite) and Brian C Brown (Briarpatch) & Elliott DiGuiseppi (Lucy in the Sky). The executive producer is Mike Mitchell (director of next year’s Kung Fu Panda 4) and the co-producer is Rachel Zusser (associate producer, The Croods: A New Age).

These story beats are so much more impactful I wish this was how it was kept omg it was so great before. I love the whale saving, Ruby being a protector and I love the line between mother and grandmother “ You’re trying to force your daughter to live a life she doesn’t want”.

Is there any version of this movie where Chelsea gets a redemption? Or at least peace between Krakens and Mermaids is achieved?

Besides, they burnt her hair, and she literate said “this was the worst revenge plan ever”, almost like she just wants to give up! “Protector” my ass! These krakens are irredeemable monsters, by choice, and instinct!😡

Ilove that they put in the table differences between the grandmother, mother and Ruby and showned it by telling which. " roles" each one of them takes. Ruby as Protector is genius. It is alone give her much more personality than what we got in the final film..

uh, they really had a lot of different ideas for the final battle, quite similar but each one define by a few key differences, this one in particular isn't bad but I would said is very fast, one thing that does surprise me is the lack of... well, anger from Ruby's part knowing Chelsea took advantage of her through the last days/weeks from knowing each other, I would love to see a version that emphasizes this somehow...

I think they should watched first the final fights between Shuri vs Namor in Wakanda Forever and Arthur/Aquaman vs Orm/Ocean Master in Aquaman Cuz an conclussion like that fight would be better

Oh here the final idea is very similar to the one we saw, only here Ruby had a much higher power.BONE CONTROLLED THE WATER IN A FEW WORDS. (⁠(⁠(⁠;⁠ꏿ⁠_⁠ꏿ⁠;⁠)⁠)⁠). I don't know why I imagine something horrible when I take his water hair xD, like if it was removed or I don't know. But seriously here Ruby was far superior in Power. In the movie they already nerfed her a bit xD. Honestly, I would like to see the idea about Ruby to control the 5 corresponding oceans.🤔. Maybe in a sequel her powers to be the protector of the ocean might increase for sure. I personally would love to see how he surpasses his grandmother and mother. Pd:Thank you very much for always bringing us these scenes that we didn't see at the end, I really love it. So thank you.🥰✌️✨

The more I see from all this(and all from ONE story artist, longtime Disney/Illumination/DreamWorks veteran Darren Webb)... ...the more interesting the final film would have been. I have said this many times already, but I just feel bad for Ruby Gillman and while it sadly didn't end up being a good film, there were still SO many good ideas that it had, much of which should have ended up in the final film.
