Ruby Princess offers a great traditional cruising experience - Alaska cruise review + tips

I recently cruised to Alaska on Ruby Princess, which is an older ship with a very traditional, some would say dated, vibe. But unlike newer ships, almost every square inch of the amenities on the upper decks is available to everyone, which means you have your pick of a whopping five pools, including two in a cool resort complex at the back of the ship. But there are no indoor pools, which was unfortunate considering it was very cold and rainy in for most of our time in Alaska. Our cruise stopped in Glacier Bay National park, which was very well organized and coordinated with the park’s rangers who boarded the ship and hosted several events and activities. My experience on Ruby was the opposite of my last cruise to Alaska on Princess, which was a comedy of many errors. I continue to find it so odd that Princess, who has sailed so long to Alaska, continues to operate ships with upper decks not properly designed for cold weather operations. I’ve been on one Princess and two Holland America cruises to Alaska. While I enjoy Princess (and sail them elsewhere), Holland America’s sailings were just better in that region. Both HAL ships had forward observation lounges and both had retractable roof pool decks that made that whole space useable even on bad weather days.

Agreed - Holland’s ships are better equipped for places like Alaska. Not sure why Princess has a thing against indoor pools!

Going on Caribbean Princess in a few weeks....specialty restaurants have been completely sold out for several months. Guessing that is the Premier Package future...

Sorry to hear. I’ve always had luck getting reservations by going to the restaurant as soon as I board. I think at least 10% of tables are held back for onboard reservations for casino comps, walk-ins etc. I hope you get to snag the reservation you’re looking for and that you enjoy your cruise on Caribbean!
