This was great. The first video I've seen comparing several of the slightly variable versions of the Ruby. I picked one up kind of on a whim at a local gun show a few years ago. Mine is surprisingly nice, considering it seems to have been in French military service for some time after WW1. It still has the slide rivet, which I believe was added sometime around the early 1920s. Supposedly was picked up on the battlefield from a German soldier in WW2 and brought back, but that is simply the story from the previous owner. When I got it, it had one unmarked aftermarket magazine and an original marked AK, this pistol is marked AA. Both mags worked fine, I sold the AK mag to another ruby collector and bought two AA marked mags that also work fine. All in all, a little quirky but an immense pleasure to shoot, and i'd say as accurate as any shown in the video. Thanks

Rubys in Finland where called "Vääpelin pistooli" aka Master Sargeants pistol, often given to NCO:s in supply roles. They were a lot more liked than the 5000 Chauchats France donated in 1939... Those wound up in coastal forts pretty quickly as they were the only places with any change of keeping them running.

The manufacturers (Trocaola Aranzabal) spelled their own name wrong in the barrel stamping, which has the most horrifying kerning I've ever seen on anything that wasn't made in Microsoft Works. The dealer who sold it to me thought it was a Chinese Mystery Revolver and the "TROCAOLAARAMZABALYCIAEIBARESPANA" stamp was just gibberish. (He also thought it was chambered for .32 S&W Long.) I felt like a dang detective when I figured out what the heck it actually was. :)

The 'slip past' disconnector system was also used on the Beretta 1915 pistol. I have not seen them on any other Beretta pistol, nor does the Beretta book mention the style at all. The "Unique" company (for lack of a clearer word) in southern France seems to be the northern most bastion of the Basque gun makers largely found within the boundaries of Spain. As you see, the guns of the period look to be as different - and as similar - as the variations made in Spain. The side positioned, stamping looking, disconnector was still used until the 'modern' Spanish gun makers (Star, Astra and Llama) went under.

I have a question, someone I know has one with NO names or import markings. It does have a 4 digit serial number. My question is, after firing one round from a full magazine, can you eject unfired rounds to clear the mag. This one seems to fire and eject nicely, but if the magazine is full, you can't work the slide to eject unspent rounds. It's like, shoot them all or keep it in your holster on safety with a round un it. Seems VERY unsafe. It looks (inside) like the very first one you were pointing out the sear set up EXACTLY. It also has the steel nub on the side that keeps it from snagging its safety on the holster.( as you indicated) . I'd be glad to round up a photo to get a look. On the plastic grips ,it says Cal. 7.65 m/m. And has a 9 in a circle on it with a wreath around the circle. The cal/M.M thing seems kind of odd .anyway, I'll dance at your wedding if you can answer my question, or supply ANY info on it. Photo is easily forthcoming. (He lives next door) thank you for your video. It already gave me info to share with him. Or I'll just send him the link.(showing my age) Merci'

NY reload for the win. Small guns are awesome that way. I’ve been reading and watching many accounts and watching videos. In actual self defence I’ve read of two accounts of reloading, (a combat reload and an empty gun and mag being loaded while on the go). The combat reload went bad but the guy survived but definitely lost the fight, (very bad lifetime issues from his injuries) and the other was a guy grabbing a rifle and an empty mag plus a small handful of cartridges. He saved many lives and was down to his last bullet doing so. The third was a video, also a combat reload but he never needed to fire afterwards, especially since he also recovered the gun of the person who shot him. In short reloading is kinda bad, but I have read many accounts of police doing so as well as NY reloads. (Obviously this happens in military situations and I’ve unfortunately had the displeasure of doing so myself).

@@nesonhisgame Apologies but I still don’t get it. The shaft of the safety lever has nothing to do with takedown, doesn’t need to be removed from slide disassembly for field stripping and doesn’t interfere with the slide anyway. Only the barrel and hammer and disconnector could do that. I have one on which the hammer protrudes a bit too high when cocked and thus interferes with forward slide travel for disassembly. I get around it by pulling the slide back slightly and releasing the slide (with barrel removed). The extra push makes the slide ride over the bit of hammer poking up where it shouldn’t.

In the book "Poilu: the notebooks of Louis Barthas", he speaks of a Chauchat gunner armed with a Ruby pistol who manages to draw it and shoot himself accidentally due to the safety brushing off on the holster. That possible poaching gun's barrel makes some sense. I guess somebody tried to make it a more effective weapon for hunting, adding a stock and replacing a worn barrel themselves with handtools leaving as much thickness to the barrel for theoretical accuracy. And that would explain why the rifling was in pretty nice condition, they didn't cheap out on the barrel blank but did the rest of the work themselves.

@@michaelhyland9216 Not really, it’s just a larger cylindrical body portion followed by a thinner pin portion. The body portion will have a slot in it for the retaining pin/stud/screw in the frame. Where this slot needs to be depends on your pistol. The thinner firing pin portion will need to be long enough to carry the retraction spring. If you don’t have the broken original you can deduce the dimensions easily enough and base the design off photos online. Search for “percuteur Ruby” and you’ll get a good overview of the design.
