advice from a phd candidate: consider how much literature you would be able to find on each topic and how much work each topic would require. If you have problems choosing I strongly advise you to choose the easiest one.

Contrary to many comments, I would not advise to go with a topic that seems easier or an author you don't like too much. I did my master's thesis on a topic that was as close to my heart as it could get and that I had so much passion for and it was the best decision I could have made. Yes, it was an incredible amount of work, especially since there wasn't a lot of existing research on the topic that I could fall back on, but I enjoyed every minute of it. Choose something you love. You will put so much time and effort into it, you should actually be able to enjoy it. I'm sure you'll make a decision that's right for you x
@margaridaferreira80293 жыл бұрын
So true! My masters was hard work but I loved the topic I choose. For the Phd I chose something I was not interested but seemed easier... I end up spending 6 grueling years and finally giving it all up. I just could not stand it anymore.
@charlottegraham70823 жыл бұрын
I have 2 BAs and an MA and I remember when doing my literature MA thesis I was told to never ever pick the author I love, but rather one I was reluctant about. The logic to this is that you will find it far easier to treat the work critically. I am a Jane Austen type but I did my MA on George Orwell's 1984, as far from Austen as I could get! I was much more "detached" from the book and the author and so I felt it was easier to treat it like a piece of academic work instead of a pet project. I am really glad I took that advice!
@gingersal80523 жыл бұрын
It's very interesting advice! I did two MA thesis and the subjects were always based upon writers I liked a lot (one of them was my very favorite at the time) but I did choose 'narrow' aspects of their works that I felt I could approach with distance.

My advice for picking a dissertation topic/writing it are: 1. Make sure you love the topic as it will be all you are doing for a long time 2. Make sure you can get lots of critical reading for the topic before choosing 3. Read and annotate everyday, you’ll be surprised how much you will have “written” before you even start 4. Divide out your time from start date to submission date and allocate time to each section and try to stick to it, I had mine ready and edited a week before submitting this way

I didn't have to write a dissertation in my first cycle of university but as a former masters student (two years dissertation) I would say that the main thing is to find a topic that will be intellectually challenging for the entirety of the research and writing process, but with enough research/critical writing available to feel like you start with good stepping stones. Considering that you will have one academic year, you should consider which subject has the most sources available through your university ressources/local libraries! (Drawing your own conclusion is an exhilarating feeling. Having an existential crisis because you chose such a random author that you end up being the most qualified specialist of his work by reading three of his books and writing one research paper is... peculiar.) I don't think it applies for your possible subjects, but my main advice is to think twice about choosing an emotionally draining topic when it will be on your mind for months on end and never completely leave your brain after that!
@WhereTheresAQuill3 жыл бұрын
In terms of master and doctoral potential, personally, I think the Emily Dickinson topic has a broader appeal. It offers the opportunity to engage with primary sources in their manuscript form which is an interesting and important skill, especially if you wanted to work with original documents in a PhD down the line. Plus you seemed super interested in the DASH for that studytube video that I think it would be a fascinating topic for you. Victorian literature I think it sometimes a bit oversaturated its harder to stand out from the crowd.
@WhereTheresAQuill3 жыл бұрын
Oops wrote this before you said you weren't going to! I may be biased as my PhD is with The National Gallery and I look at original 15th century paintings and manuscripts so I'm a sucker for a primary source! Letter writing will also be very good for this - especially if you're able to incorporate some archive; visits or research into it!

Just graduated last week with 92% in my dissertation- I wrote it on the portrayal of death in children’s films/literature! My advice is to pick an area that you are interested in (for me, children’s film/ literature) but choose a pertinent topic within that area that you are critically- and somewhat emotionally- distanced from (for me, this was the topic of death). I found that, by doing so, both my passion AND my critical voice came across in my writing. Good luck Ruby, no doubt in my mind that you will smash this! X

Ruby, umm, silly question-- how do you tape your papers to the wall and then remove them and RETAPE them? because, well, tape sticks to the paper and when you remove it, a layer of paper comes along with it, ruining your clipping... do you use some special tape..?

Hi Ruby, I remember your theology and philosophy video where you discussed some career ideas you were considering for after your degree. I'd love to know what you're thinking about doing after your English degree? I'm an English student and finding it really difficult to decide whether to continue because of the uncertainty of what I'll do afterwards. It would be a really helpful conversation x
