niamh In the States (for people unfamilair) there is a choice between 2 criterion referenced exams, academic grades, references, and extra curricular activities. Contacts can help too. These are submitted with the application. March is when people start receiving acceptance and rejection letters. Until the mid-90s(?) you’d get a fat envelope if you were accepted. It had the forms with the registration process, forms for financial assistance, housing, off campus venues (shopping,dinning) , sororities/fraternities (Universiity authorized cliques) clubs; hence a fat envelope. Now days it’s all on line.

I totally get why you are slightly disappointed initially with your RS grade. Throughout the whole year I got topgrades in one of my history courses (never below 75) and in the exam I 'only' got 68 and to get that was just slightly annoying despite getting an A* overall. Don't feel bad about it, it is okay to be ambitious xx
@katharina13986 жыл бұрын
Elise van der Wiel How are grades measured in England? Is the 75 a percentage or points or whatever? I'm from Germany and we get it all measured in percents during the last two years of school, and I was just interested in how it is done in England :).
@elisevanderwiel6 жыл бұрын
K a t h i Completely understandable. I grew up in the Netherlands and completed my education there so a levels was just an extra thing and in the beginning I was intrigued by it as well. In England a grade is A*ABCDE and a mark is the 'number' you get out of total. So in my case I got a Grade A* on my Spanish history paper with a total of 68 marks. You could roughly say (at the moment this isnt foolproof as A levels have been reformed) that an A*=100-90% A=90-80% , B=80-70%, C=70-60%, D=60-50% E=50-40%. I hope this makes sense ?

I know a lot of people here are saying you should be very happy with your results, and yes, looking at the results alone - they are amazing! But having watched you for the last couple of years and seeing how hard you have worked, it is totally okay for you to admit they are not quite what you wanted. Unfortunately, it is just the nature of the A-level system subjects despite huge amouts of work and talent in the subject you may not reach the top grade . The way papers are marked is often just on whether you tick the right boxes and not your general grounding in the subject - but I promise you, once you get to university eveything changes. You are rewarded for your curiosity in the subject, origional ideas (ones that may not have ticked the boxes at Alevel) and fundamentally your hard work. I have absolutely no doubt that you will thrive there and wish you the best of luck!

First of all, I‘m so happy for you! Congratulations! Second of all, I know exactly how you feel with being disappointed about not getting the A* even though you expected to. I literally thought out of all my subjects Maths would be the only one where I could an A in. However when I got my results I found out I got English: A* German: A- Psychology: A- Maths: B- Now German and Psychology were a complete shock to me cause I was struggling so much the entire year, so obviously I was very amazed at the fact that I was able to do that. With English I was just very content to achieve the A* but not very shocked. Maths still gets me down however. Even though the others subjects went so well, I just can‘t seem to let it go. So hopefully it helps you to know that I struggled with my results as well even though they were better than I ever expected them to be. Lots of love from Germany! (P.s.: We already got our results in June I find it very annoying that you have to wait for yours for such a long time.)

It does help in college though, bc it helps you create healthy study habits and discipline. I never studied more than a few days before exams until I got into uni with full As on all subjects (my country grades us based on a 0 to 20 numerical system and I finished high school - 3 years here - with an average of 19.6) and went through 6 years of miserable med school where I did pass but sometimes with a lot of anxiety and fear of flunking because I never got the discipline and motivation to study every day and longer than 4 hours. And now after finishing it with a B average (16) I decided this isn't what I want to do for the rest of my life lmao

I am so proud of you Ruby! I fully understand that it might be a bit disappointing now, but believe me, when you're in the middle of studying for your degree, you'll look back and wonder why you ever worried about A levels at all. Now, enjoy preparing for university because the next three years will go by so quickly and you will wonder where all the time went. Make the most of it and enjoy it as much as possible!
