the gods of dance...i've been dancing for 30 years and i can't get it this good...

What interests me the most is how the brothers expanded their repertoire over the years. In the 30s, when they were really young, their dancing was mostly straight tap, but in the next decade they added the acrobatics and athleticism that became their hallmark. It's like watching the evolution of Astaire from the 30s through the 50s. the truly great ones with the long lasting careers grow with the times, perfecting and honing their craft as they go along. Bravo, Nicholas Brothers!

These are children whose enormous potential and enormous talent was recognized. And they shared their knowledge and skill teaching others. May all children be encouraged and recognized, and may they all fulfill their potential.

That the Nicholas Brother's talent is totally amazing goes without saying, but what I love about this video is their confidence and poise and the way they just ooze charm already at such a young age. What a pure joy it is to watch them.

Great post!! I use to have a copy of this film short called "The Black Network," but I lost the tape. Back in the mid 80's I spoke to Fayard about this number during intermission at the annual Tap Dance celebration held at Town Hall in NYC. He expressed fond memories of making this film.

You gotta be kidding me! How absolutely GREAT. I didn't know they could sing either. What a precious piece of footage. So adorable. That made me smile a mile wide. They were the greatest dancers ever. So graceful. Floating on air. And the younger one is an absolute doll! Thanks for posting. The first time I saw the Nicholas Brothers I thought the routine was a trick or something. Nobody should have been able to move that way!!

It's because they didn't just work to perfection they did something they enjoyed plus they loved each other. The energy that they brought to their performances is something you can't get from hollywood performers. I thought all of these girl and guy duets were the best until I saw The Nicholas Brothers. They're just so fun to watch and only got better as they got older. I wish I could just be friends with my family like that, let alone work together with them.

Look at these men (young boys at the time)...they were men in STATURE long before their ages would deem them so. To me, these brothers represent pride, dignity, and strength. We as black men and women need to take note of this; their style, their dress, their CONFIDENCE, it speaks volumes.

I first saw the Nicholas Brothers when PBS broadcast a 1992 A&E documentary called "The Nicholas Brothers, We Sing and We Dance". It is a fascinating biography of the brothers with lots of clips of their dancing. It is not available on DVD or tape but the Turner Classic Movies website has a page where you can add your name to request that it be released on DVD. There are only 9 requests so far so maybe if lots of us go there and add our names, it might happen. It's worth a try.
