Few people commenting on this, but I was told by a soldier, the best weight for rucking is to use 2l bottles of water (2kg, 4kg, 6 kg, etc).. Here is why? Its essentially free You will never get dehydrated if you misjudge the distance Its can easily be adjusted (by pouring parts of it out on the road, grass verge, etc) It is relatively soft on the back This guy used to carry extra water around with him and become very popular at the end of a long run.

That’s what I do, use 2L bottles. I live in the mountains in wales and in the summer during lockdown, I did a lot of rucking in the mountains, and one day it was quite hot and I got to the top of the mountain and my hydration pack had run out then I remembered I had a massive rucksack full of water lol 😆

@@charliegedge5226 it's not mentioned much. I walk (on the flat) 5-10km a day for fitness and usually carry 10 l in two 5l bottles. Needless to say, never ran out of water yet! Lol But the water is back for drinking, washing (especially cuts or Injuries), drinking water for animals, help someone with their car lol basically it's a useful and disposable weight and definitely a good one for mountain hiking. Wouldn't be the first time to come across people in flip flops and a can of coke realising that hiking up a mountain when it's 24C is dehydrating

OMG!! I'm new to rucking and I was wondering what to put in the pack to get the weight without having to stuff shoes, clothes, etc... THIS IS A GREAT IDEA. What is the weight of 2L in pounds? I'm going to try and start with 25 lbs.

@@J3unG hi. Water 1l = 2.2 lbs I use 2 5l bottles which will fit side by side in even a small 20l backpack with plenty of space. That's 22lbs. Then I add 2 X 500 ml bottles of water , which I will typically drink first if I need to. This makes 24.2 lbs which is close to you target 25 kg. I personally would start at 7 or 8 kg if you are not used to carrying weight in you make to avoid a sore back whilst you get used to it the first few times. But this depends on your level of fitness, strength and speed. Remember you can increase effort by 1) weight, 2) terrain (soft like sand is easier in joints but more effort), 3) speed and 4) gradient. Good luck

I’m 47 and I hate running so i started rucking and I love it. I use 20kg plates which i wrap in a towel and put 8n my ruck sack. I started with 10kg and did 5/10 miles but now it seems easy so I do 20kg but just five miles. Three miles of it is on a steep Rd and the rest is flat. I use to train often in the gym but due to lock down decided to do this. I feel it’s a great compound exercise works most the large muscles ( sore on shoulders) on the body . My endurance, strength, stability has greatly improved aswell as my state of mind, much happier. Also days I do only 5 miles I will end by doing couple of sprints on stairs but with 10kg cos i feel running up stairs it is a manageable weight to do a Hit kind of workout.

For last 10 minutes I do shoulder shrugs holding arms in different positions. I think it helps get shoulders used to weight over time. Sometimes get home and do the dishes or whatever for 5 10 minutes and realise havent taken bag off. Guess sign i can go heavier. My outter calves kill me first ten minutes though so not keen to go heavier yet. Or elsestrengthen separately some how with out fatiguing for next ruck. StrengthRunning advocates strength work end of a run so maybe calf raises at end of ruck. Thinking if go every day alternate heavy and light days or what strength work do

Over the past year and a half I had changed to a plant based diet witch was great, but with very slow results, then I started rucking consistently. And my world changed. I have lost 33 pounds and am in the best shape of my life. I am 57 years old. Recently had a physical and my doctor took me off my heart medicine. Thanks GORUCK! I’ll skip the beer and have a green drink !

Yeah, I like rucking. Most of my exercises are rucks with a 45lb ALICE. But If you can’t run you are out of shape.

Different muscles, different activity. For me distance running is very bad. Its hard on joints and feet. But Rucking increased sprint speed significantly and I can carry a 5 gal tank sprayer on my back all day at work without any soreness.

This is a form of a marketing ad and they’re trying to appeal to more people. Someone already a bit educated on fitness knows running is important. Not necessarily a bad way to advertise rucking if this gets more sedentary people out walking with a little added weight.

I've been slacking off and getting way out of shape. I don't care that I am 58 years old. It's not an excuse. I had first decided that I wanted to start training to do a 1/2 marathon next year. My guy Bill was very impressed that I started going for walks again. I told him I wanted to be able to start hiking as well. I bought a backpack and a cheap water hydration bladder to see if I like it. I looked in the Mirror yesterday and seen how flabby my muscles are getting, I said wow, I need to do more. I use to have a kick-ass figure and toned muscles. Yesterday Bill came home and told me about Rucking, he showed me some videos. I said yeah that's what I want to do. Bill also wants to do it. I'm so thrilled he decided to do this. Now I have a partner. Ruck On.

Two most effective exercises I think are rucking and running. They are active resistance training. Just however running is building endurance and strength unless what shoes are effective. Running also is a part of a foundational human movement. Rucking is less intense and also builds strength. Like asking which one is better for you terms of staying in shape, using bodyweight or resistance.

“Running sucks” says the Green Beret! LOL True that though, out of all the physical activities during my brief time in the army, a forced march, separated the men from the boys. Especially when the weight pushed 60+ lbs plus weapons system.

Incorrect, I was in the Army for over 10 years. If you are not in shape enough to sing while you ruck then your out of shape. Baller move right here replying to a two year old comment.

Hi I have a question I just started rucking I wear a 10kg vest and also put a 10kg pack in a rucksack is this ok or is it better to put all weight in the rucksack I only do it once a week to supplement my other workouts cheers in advance

Do what challenges you. Feel free to mix it up. Just know the difference of when your body tells you you’re in pain versus when you’re injured.

LUKE wheatley typical rule of thumb is 10% of your body weight. Maybe a little more if you’re used to it.

Also, buy a sternum strap and put it on, it'll help distribute the load and makes it suck less.

Adding weight wrecks discs, vertebrae and every other joint we have. You're strong until the damage sets in. Pretty much every vet who "rucked" gets wrecked later in life

Does everyone who rucks use excessive weight? How much weight has to be added for said damage to occur? Is everyone that rucks a vet? Do they train like one? Could you cite your sources, and not just personal anecdotes? What if I ruck with 15 pounds, and no more (less than 10% of my body weight)? Not everyone that rucks trains like they’re in the military. Why would you apply the extreme version of an exercise to the activity in general? Seems like your critique lacks nuance and is based on a caricature of rucking, which is extremely misleading.
