Ordinarily, I would click thru some of the steps in this type of video, but with extra time on my hands (thanks, COVID-19 outbreak! :/ ) I can now watch these all the way through! I've discovered that these Onboard Lifestyle project videos (and other project-type vids on YT) are kinda ASMR for for me. Great 'content' for these troubling times. Thanks!

For anybody watching to learn: peel ply also leaves the surface ready for the next coat as it leaves the correct tooth on it and eliminates the need to pre sand. Also you don't want sharp edges on repairs like he made as it does bond to adjacent layers. You want to sand the edges to blend so the next layer of glass (not just thickened epoxy) can be blended back into the lower layer. In deep depressions just do multiple layers. Also tapping works to "sound" deep voids but for delamination just sliding something hard across the surface will reveal the blisters better. You can hear a couple both before AND after the repair are made on the first rudder. It makes a hiss or goes from a "shoosh" sounds to a "shish" sound. He may just be doing a wham-bam job until they get the boat on the hard.
@Nilezy5 жыл бұрын
What sharp edges? I think you need to watch more episodes to know Teal would not finish his work like that. And sound tapping is a very reliable way of determining de-lamination. If your not an expert in fibreglass work, then yes shallow de-lamination may sound different than deep de-lamination, but to the trained ear and experienced workmanship (Like Teal) he would not miss a de-lamination spot.
@danielbuckner21675 жыл бұрын
Sharp edges refers to abrupt transitions.Haha, ok. You might want to ask Rosney himself about that and let him correct you himself. I am not sure if you meant to say that backwards or not but deep delam and shallow does sound different and a novice may not be able to tell the difference and if they don't "sound" for it then they certainly wont. Thanks for admitting that experience matters. I started back when we still used PEV resin for everything (1991) and did all big jobs wet on wet and made and colored our own gel coat. Nowadays its epoxy and paint and gone. I do like epoxy but still prefer gelcoat. It's harder for DIYers to do though and I get that. I'm not saying best doing a bad job but if somebody is watching this to learn they should be able to.👍

You should keep at least two sanders. Thatss for whenn the boat is up on the slip you both can then sand eaach side of the hulls and that will be a lot quicker. Australia is in an heatwave and yesterday in Brisbane got upto 37 deg c and around 38 deg c hear on the goldcoast.

Where did you go to learn how to do all this stuff to your boat??? You seem to have such a wealth of knowledge on everything!!! It's awesome the way you know just what to do and how it should be... I've often thought about doing somethings in fiberglass but never knew anything about doing it but you make it look some what simple I may after this cold Wisconsin weather goes away I may just try to do a little something with fiberglass. I'm 60 I guess your never to old to learn something new. I'm disabled to the point that I can't turn wrenches no more so I need to find a new hobby... LOL...

@JosephOster5 жыл бұрын
Those old rudders look small and out of date. The kick-up feature can be very convenient, especially if you decide to replace them with a deeper, "modern" NACA profile design.
@mauriziocanale16695 жыл бұрын
i agee deeper more efficent and best wind angle
@OnboardLifestyle5 жыл бұрын
New "modern" rudders would be nice if money was no object. Unfortunately it is, so our rudders will have to work for now. That can be later down the road if performance is an issue.
@mauriziocanale16695 жыл бұрын
sure any mod with your ability is possible anytime
@JosephOster5 жыл бұрын
@@mauriziocanale1669 - no doubt about Teal's ability, which is a pleasure to watch. Removing the kick-up feature now, though, and re-building it later seems like needless extra work. Even with the old rudders, the ability to raise a rudder to untangle lines or flotsam comes in handy.
