I'm convinced our ancient ancestors were using this method. This would leave no trace for modern archeologists to find and say "those cave dudes were doing it like such&such." Perhaps the reason there is so little information about fire use in the archeological record is because this method would disappear immediately, never mind sticking around a million years later to be discovered by some know-nothing post doc. Great video. I have abandoned my hand and bow drill efforts and only keep a small 35 mm film canister with wood ashes and a couple-few cotton balls. Takes up way less space than a bow drill kit.

It could be done easily but anymore I don't carve sets at all. I do have a carved hand hold that I use to demonstrate new material out of convenience. @boggycreekbeast2 жыл бұрын
Sorry for late response. I am rarely on here. Now, as far as not having ashes(which is the easiest and most preferred way to perform this method) it can be done without them. However, performing without ashes can be difficult. I do have videos were I demonstrate this method without ashes or tools but I recommend to others to practice with ashes before moving without them. I have numerous videos were I use other substances as a substitute for ashes. One example is Rust(iron oxide), which is one of my very own earlier innovations that can be used with this method. Yes, its extremely versatile. All that said, think of the Rudiger Roll as a complement to all fire making methods.

It doesn't look like you are using a lot of downward pressure or for that matter speed (like a bow drill). What do you think is the "secret"? It looks like skills I already have so after years of seeing you do it and making it look so easy I'm not sure why I haven't tried it much less mastered it into my skill set. How hard do I push down? I can see (for the most part) how fast to go from your demos
@boggycreekbeast5 жыл бұрын
John, first off, sorry about taking so long to respond. I'm really busy at the new job friend. How much pressure really depends on you and the materials. I wish I had an easy answer for you but the truth is we're all different in terms of what is light or heavy. Honestly, I'm using about moderate pressure. This method is ridiculously easy to perform and master. Shoot, with perfect material at home I can make embers in under 1 second. Not kidding you. When I do a speed demonstration I only touch the board to the cotton when I'm going for an ember that way the cotton is cold for the rolling. That is an accurate test of speed. Here is a speed demo kzbin.info/www/bejne/mGmbp2Nmpc-VjM0
